The reason all AAA-games have those tight areas you have to squeeze through is because it's hiding a loading screen. It's a way of keeping you immersed in the world, instead of it cutting to black or freezing for the load.
@@Eventide215 The weird thing about games is that because those segments are so predictable that they end up feeling familiar and safe. You can take a mental break for that short bit.
the problem isn't that it's pointless, it's that when every single game does the same thing, it stops being clever. a genuine loading screen would probably be less immersion-breaking than the exact same squeezing-through-small-gap sequence that you've seen in every single game ever. the goal should be to come up with new/different ways of hiding loading screens, which many games actually do! as opposed to relying on already-overused methods
36:40 **not really a spoiler because it's literally explaining it in the game, but...** Each number is one of the 3 endings. 1. Keep ringing the bell, play the story as normal. 2. Escape to the elevator. (Can be done at the beginning after the first bell, or iirc somewhere near the end, hence the 2 arrows to it.) 3. Find all 3 bars and get the 6 photos before completing the game.
Yeah it's interesting that the drawing is just literally showing you how to get the endings. I'm curious of the 2nd ending with just going right to the elevator. It shows some yellow (electric?) lines to get to the elevator.
For a game that I thought was going to just P.T. this was surprisingly well done. I like the weird self hating architect story, and the idea of needing to photograph the thing you'd normally not want to be looking at is neat.
This game is so good, cause while there are jumpscares they're scarce and very effective. Like, it has you on edge the whole time and every scare pays off that way
It popped up on my rec list and I thought it was an old video I'd missed. Stared at the thumbnail art a long while, like "this does not look like old Dan art..." before realising it was not an old video at all. It was minutes old.
Out of all the games I’ve watched them play, this is the only one that actually made me jump and scare my dog. Scared me badly enough to comment on a video posted years ago right now. Sweet lord.
God the one when you come out of the bathroom literally made me involuntarily yelp. I have seen someone play this game before and you somehow make it more scary.
good to see a scary game that dont rely on jump scares. the anticipation is so much more tense. then of course both the scares (the first with "Marcy in the kitchen door, and the one upstairs where she "jumped" you) got me good. Hope you will play the other endings and all the collectables.
Narrow passages in video games are a way to slow down the player because of loading times while restricting their visual field, making it easier to load an area without them noticing. It's also a way to have them be at a specific spot in a specific animation, so if you want to surprise their character in a convenient way, placing NPCs waiting behind a narrow passage is a solution that usually feels organic enough.
I love watching all SGS videos! When you guys are ready to go down the rabbit hole I will be there every step of the way, and I'm looking forward to whatever you decide to do in the meanwhile too!
I got the urge to re-watch "Old" scary game squad videos and remembered this one. I can't believe it was from this year, it feels like it was so long ago.
I've seen a few other youtubers play this and this is the first horror game that truly gets me no matter how many times I've seen it. I'd love for you guys to do more playthroughs!! :)
I mean.. Davis is literally surrounded by friends while playing it. Alone he'd be too terrified to really play I'm sure. 1 hour would have likely turned into 3.

I would say the original Outlast and its DLC Whistleblower did the dragging/KO section very well. When Krieger has you in that wheelchair, or the Groom has you in the locker, those are very dread filling scenes

12:45 for me it is the complete opposite Jesse.. I feel zero fear in the games or movies where you dont SEE the thing you're supposed to be afraid of. Like walking in a spooky empty house or whatever. Those games / movies just dont "work" for me. I dont feel anything, im just too rational i guess, i cant get afraid of something that isnt there, irrational fears of the unknown.. ESPECIALLY in games where you just respawn a meter back, thats just like, removing all fear from me. Because why be afraid of getting killed by the boogeyman, if it has no consequence for you? I think thats why roguelike games are way more terrifying to me than any horror game, because when you die, you lose hours of progress. That is true terror lol. Thats why the Creeper in Minecraft was so fucking scary, because you know that if he sneaks up on you, you just drop EVERYTHING you worked hard for the last hour on the ground in a dark dank cave u might not find again (no chest marker in old vanilla minecraft). Thats also why the very FIRST time you saw a creeper in minecraft, you didnt feel fear. Because you had no reason to be afraid of a green hissing silly looking penismonster. But AFTER you know he instakills you and you lose your whole inventory. Then, the second time is scary as fuck. But when you DO see something, and it has a material physical reason to be able to hurt you, THEN im afraid. Like a lion or xenomorph from Aliens. That is scary as fuck, because you know it can physically ruin your life (even if you lose an arm but live). But just walking around in an empty level, zero fear for me, so those kinda games are totally pointless for me. =/

Hey, Scary Game Squad, just came across this video and I thought I ask if you guys might want to try my game called "The Possession Experiment". it was on the top of itch for a few weeks and even Markiplier gave it a play and really liked it. When I learned about cheap loading times it completely ruined the elevator immersion in dead space .... I wish I could go back.
