Richard Prince High Times at GAGOSIAN

James Kalm has been booted from the Gagosian Gallery on several occasions for his attempts to bring viewers recordings of historic exhibitions. However, this week seems to portend a softening of the strict NO PHOTO policy at the gallery, as your reporter has slipped in twice to grab some footage.
This show has tweaked members of the original Neo-Expressionists, due to its blatant rip-off of the “Naive Nouveau” look without the anxiety. The cynical stair might evoke the question; is the authentic primitive outsider, just another infinitely reproducible product brand? Richard Prince continues his provocative practice of questioning the role of perspective in perception. This perspective has less to do with the viewer’s location, than levels of authenticity or photographic imitation. Is a photograph an original work of art or a reproduction of a work of art? What is primitive if the primitive has access to the latest technologies? This program was recorded November 1, 2018.
