I thought Houndmaster was just ok, but I recently found a mod that replaces his dog with a corgi that can wear the outfits of the other heroes and since then he's been an essential part of my teams.
The thing i love about GR is that she have no problems with stress at all. She have a lot of stress healing due to crits and kills, and enemies dont usually hit her.

@@Ekair42 dunno. I guess enemies do some calculations and dont choose targets they have lower chances to hit. To me it seems like she somehow have lower priority than other guys.
@@Ekair42 to quote the almighty shuff "do you even shadowfade tho?!" Stealth and being in the back helps a lot if you're getting focused, also having a character with guard is helpful.
Jester, just let go of your preconceived notions and spam Harvest. The Jester has best lines of any player character weather its crits, campfires, or afflictions, the backstory comic is awesome as well. Love his sfx when he attacks, and repositioning can Move anywhere. True, he's a bit boring as support for stuff like endless, but does a damn good job of it. Truly amusing.
Also, I really love Jester's character design. In general, I really love that in this game, but dual-wielding a sickle and a dagger with that faceless mask? Awesome. Not my absolute favorite class aesthetics-wise (that is probably Plague Doctor or Shield Breaker), but definitely up there. As for mechanics, dunno, I suck at the game. But I'm learning. :P
My favorite is definitely highwayman, he is just such a badass, every skill he uses looks epic and he punishes every attack on him with his riposte, i once landed a 4 times riposte crit in a row. He also looks scarier that the monsters and demons.
Yeah highwayman DPS busted. It's also hella nice to put two of them in the front and let them back to back point blank shot to melt through the front rows
This is why I believe that DD is designed really well, especially on the characters aspect. Man-at-arms is one of my favorites but I can accept your viewpoint on him a 100%.
The BH is such a badass character that have no fear to face anyone: giant, fiend, bandit...he have one tool for each situation like the Witcher. Obs.: I use a Witcher skin on my Bounty Hunter. I like the Arbalest/Musketeer too with her crits and support habilites

My favorite team will always be the one I first encountered the Collector with. It was Helion 1rst, Crusaders as 2&3, Plague doctor back. Both Crusaders with Holy Lance, Stunning Blow, stress heal and heals. Works like a charm. You absolutely obliterate the back lines with Helion and Holy Lance. Plague doc stuns the two back liners, 2nd crusader the front. Its an hilarious team comp, watching the crusaders taking turn on lunging into the frey, dealing with backlines, stunning the front, et bis repetitam. Tho the strategy was good, the Collector profited of my overconfidence. His second highwayman struck an absurd 41 crit on the 3 liner... I did not killed them fast enough. Lost only this one but learned in blood that *overconfidence is sometimes a surprisingly fast killer*
I love Shield Breaker. She can hit anything from anywhere without caring about PROT. And that's valuable. Adder's Kiss, Captivate and Puncture are also absolute powerhouse skills.
I got two as the weekly event in week 2, always using both of them. It is hilarious to see their reach, the damage, the AoE, the blight. They just dance around each other, ripping through the enemy lines.
I just recently came up with combo of all my fav characters. Hellion in the front, GR second, mostly for flashing daggers and then throwing daggers, Jester with bleed skills (you see the anihilation of the middle ranks?) and Occultist in the back. I've never had more fun.
I actually got into situation when I told myself that using Antiquarian for fight is essential and it was after losing multiple times against Countess, so I tried dodge strategy and finally won using her Invigorating Vapors.
I personally love control Bounty Hunter. You can pull an enemy forward and mark, you can push an enemy back and stun and you can shuffle stun on top of decent tankiness and damage. Love nothing more than seeing a carefully balanced enemy lineup, with one move cripple 1-3 enemies damage output and then watch them stumble back into order while the rest if the team obliterates.
Did not understand how to use Grave Robber until I watched your guide, and since then I've been hooked. One of the coolest characters in DD. Leper guide soon? uwu
My favorite Character to play has and always will be Crusader. Not because he’s practical, but I’ve always been fascinated by the Templar, Crusades, and all that. I suppose he makes a great Paladin if played right, as well.
Vestal used to be my favourite. Then I learned that there actually was other healers in the game. So now it is close between HWM, Occultist, Flagellant and Jester.
My favorite party is antiquarian/highwayman/man at arms/graverobber. And those are my favorite heroes. Typically use fade and protect me turn 1, riposte and clean u whatever remains on the 2nd/3rd turns. Fights are fast enough that antiquarian heals just fine especially with the right trinkets. Or just use some food to patch up after a rough battle. For boss fights use the antiquarian's blight for GR to do uber crits out of stealth. This party can bulldoze through collectors, shamblers, vvulf and more that I cant remember. And really I started using this party based on what I learned from shuffle's videos.

Your description of the flagellant sounds like my absolute favorite hero, the Buried. She erratic, explosive, and self destructive. Her attacks cause her stress or horror, and has a chance of giving her a breakdown. Which results in other, more destructive moves that stress out the rest of the party. She has the feature of doing extra damage while stressed, and has her own affliction. Her item is laudinum. All in all, she is an ex-crusader with severe PTSD and every part of her reflects it. It fits beautifully together. Unreliable, autodestructs at times, and has completely wrecked a boss or two. Riposte + horror is brutal, just hope she kills the enemy before she has a heart attack.
I know right! IMO finale is the single most satisfying skill in the game. On my first try against the miller my jester crited for like 60 damage against one of those lvl 3 2-sized worm monsters (sorry for not knowing the name), one-shoting it from full hp, even tho being underequipped with a level. Too bad that it counts as one battle during the whole expedition, i should have saved finale for the miller, im pretty sure my jester could have killed him with a single ability
I get your mechanical/gameplay gripes with jester but man I love his design and lore so goddamn much that I can’t help but use him. I wish he had a backward moving skill that wasn’t finale, so you could play him as a dancer that builds up to the huge big damage nuke that was a bit more self sufficient instead of requiring a full dance team for that.
Something I started doing recently was running him with crusader so he can ballad turn 1, then holy lance and dirk stab dance for the rest of the fight. You've probably tried that already but it's surprisingly okay.
@@ShuffleFM huh! I’ll give it a shot! I’m all for running unorthodox comps, as I’m overall really new to the game and still figuring out what works, but that sounds like a blast. I always wanted to get more mileage out of dirk stab. In places like the cove where it’s important to bypass guards and the like, I figure it could be quite strong.
Only time I really liked the Jester was with the Harlot (modded), they are both dancing bleeders and supporters. Ended up taking maybe 30 turns to take out that bandit cannon but I had no risk of losing.
Thinking about it, I a really interesting way to buff Arb would be to give her access to DoT or better debuffs? Like Id replace Suppressive Fire with a Caustic Smoke Bomb that reduces accuracy and bleed resist. And at high levels it would have a 1 or 2 Bleed. Flare - 3 Uses per battle. Clear Mark/Stun/Stealth Immune to Mark - 3 rds +5 ACC -3 rds but only give it so man uses
Great video! I think it's important to also talk about how certain heroes make us feel personally, and not just what the meta is. Btw, in that first clip, why did you kill the hateful Virago last? I thought it's important to focus down the spellcasters first. Especially since the virago kept reviving stuff and blocking healing.
My favorites would have to be Jester, Highwayman and Crusador, recently though Abomination has grown on me. I find Jester incredibly fun and his thematic is great, the fact that I can finish off low hp guarded enemies with a 20 crit Dirk stab makes me smile and moments like when I managed to kill my first Shrieker with a 70 Finaly crit makes my brain produce happy hormone. Highwayman is just cool and I love how Crusador isn't just "sword dude" but actually can be built to support his team. Also can I just say that the barks/text/personalities that these characters have is top notch? It makes me love them all even more.
Favorite hero: my BH with hot to trot and photomania locked, and who had rabies for that sweet extra damage. Critted the swine king for 50 twice in a row before getting rekt in his first deaths door check. I cried so hard. For real now: Favs for me are HWM, BH and depending on the day Hellion or Crusader. Least favs: Arbalest (except for the swine prince/king/god, ive learnt my lesson) and antiquarian.
The hound master is really good tho.. his aoe stress heal is really good his hound harry in the warrens or Weald is actual filth if u build a bleed line up. He marks , his guard is fantastic even his main attack is good and even can stun or heal depends how you wanna take him . His camping skills are great. I feel like he is very versatile utility character.
My top 3 are definitely Bounty hunter, Occultist and Hound master usually in that team topped off with a Vestal or Arbalest. I love mark teams and Bounty hunter criting for 70 up to 90 damage with the CC trinket and Hound master's bleed and Occultist's stun was the most fun I had with my bloodmoon campaign.
Grave Robber has become one of my favorites for the reasons you mentioned. I love pairing her with Shieldbreaker. Bounty Hunter is my other favorite especially when paired with another marker and another stunner. The high damage and crits just flow
Top 3: 1.Abom 2.Occultist 3.Grave Robber(Big redemption story for i class i accidentally took mistaking it for a Musketeer and had a vendetta against for a long time on my first run,then i got to really like her in my crimson court team i used against the baron dungeon(Probs around 8 weeks) and finally on the baron she was the only one to die :( ) Bottom 3: Arbalest(but not musketeer.I dont know why but i really like musketeer even though they are same) Houndmaster Man-At-Arms
Graverobber is really fun to play, but my nr 1 has to be the highway man. Nothing in this game feels better than dodging an incoming attack and dealing high double digit damage with the riposte.
Bounty hunter for me tbh, like 30% of my parties are just huntsman corps with arbalest-vestal-houndmaster-bounty hunter and they just spam out >40 damage mark crits all day long. Good stuns on vestal and houndmaster too, bounty hunter can pull in backliners, arbalest can buff healing while vestal party heals with two heal boost trinkets, almost everyone can mark and boost damage on marked. Brilliant.
I don’t know why I’ve been enjoying it so much, but running Antiquarian in rank one or two and shuffling her around with highwayman and crusader and then anything with a little heal or good cc-general reposte first turn and dodge trinkets, and I feel like I can always make the enemies aim and miss at the characters I want them to. I just feel like a puppet master, and still get to take advantage of crusader’a support skills each fight after an initial holy lance- The AI manipulation might just be in my head, but it still feels so succinct and nice. And Antiquarian is absolutely the main character.
It think my list would be very similar. Thanks to you, it became much easier to give myself permission to enjoy and focus on playing my favorite characters even more. Because, silly enough, I was thinking my play must be too suboptimal if I like them :)
With that being said, I have found a use for MAA in regular dungeons: if you take him for medium to longs dungeons, not only is he good for a support if you play him in rank 4 with that one class trinket and Barristans' head, you can use his camp skills to buff your damage dealers so most encounters last 2 turns
I think my favourite individual class is probably Occultist because he complements my playstyle so well. Acts as a healer, decent backline damage, debuff, stun and mark. Works well for the rest of my crew. But my favourite crew set up is 100% "The Wall" for pure meme value
Top 3: Shieldbreaker, Graverobber, Jester. Yea, I like to dance) Bottom 3: Flaggelant, Man-at-Arms, and... Either Leper or Bounty Hunter. Kinda hard to decide.
My personal favorites: *Crusader. Leper. Gravedigger. Man-At-Arms. Musketeer. Bounty Hunter.* Ones I like: Highwayman. Hellion. Occultist. Jester. Vestal. Houndmaster. No: Arbalest (Redundant). Plague Doctor (She's good, I just don't like playing with her). Abomination (Kind of cool, but I may as well use Bounty Hunter for stuns, crit, and DoT). Antiquarian (I had to watch the video to remember her).
My favourite is the jester because to me there's nothing I love doing more then constantly playing the music and giving my opponents the big finale it's so satisfying to use every time because you know it's going to be good when you've been playing nothing but music
Fav has gotta be Occultist for me. Arguably the most versatile character in the game. Can slot in literally anywhere on any comp and bring a lot to the team. Marks, amazing stun, debuffs, Eldritch slaying, emergency heals. For least... MAA by far. I struggle to find non boss missions to bring him along for. So much so, that I often don’t have one trained up for those boss missions where he is actually useful.
I'm in the same boat as you, got a level 6 man-at-arms from the experienced hero event. I'm still holding him idle in town maybe for vvulf, but idk man. I'm going to try him again with ancestor's pistol and rank 4 trinket.
The MAA in boss missions is needed mostly for guarding. In regular missions he is more useful in a team that allows or needs some movement so he can stun (which moves him forward). So something like HWM and SB works well
@@S_Black I hear you, but his single target Stun isn’t really that remarkable compared to the likes of Occultist or Abom (especially if they have trinkets). Also I want my stunner to generally be fast which either hurts MAA
I use HM to either Nuke bosses or High Threat enemies (Skivvers) Dog Biscuits are insane for some burst damage. Effectiveness further amplified in mark teams, but I don’t use those all the time
@0:50 I love the reasoning you give here man 👍 for me it'll usually be my fallback if I'm not being clear enough on an opinion - it's the polite way of saying "Listen, I don't know what to tell you - I didn't find Resident Evil Beach Volleyball to be a good game because I have a whole array of senses and the chemical chains associated all waiting to pounce - your abomination of a game managed to pass through all of them and trigger nothing, so my hands are tied 😐"
Lol. To each their own. Just started out and one of my favorite combos is jester/maa/ant It does play the same every match though. Battleballad, maa repost, protect me on maa. Solo, bolster, invigorating vapors. The trio gives high dodge and high crits. It turns your fourth man into a beast.
Favourite heroes? Official ones I assume? If I were to pick three they would be the antiquarian, the occultist and the plague doctor. For the Antiquarian, sure she isn't a damage dealer or a great healer. She can however complement stunners to neutralize giants, ghouls and crabs with ease. The fact that flashpowder is a debuff and not a stun is amazing, she is also decent enough to blight enemies that just barely survived that huge critical hit. A support healer, has a key and lovely little camping skills. I even bring her to some bosses, like the big blind pig. The Occultist has an amazing comic, cool artstyle, is an explosive healer, can out-tentacle the cultists, can mark, remove enemy protection or dodge, can stun... So handy, suddenly the low accuracy, high damage classes will start working properly. Besides, there is something about fighting fire with fire. Or sorcery with sorcery. And then the Plague Doctor. She has a cool outfit, is invaluable against bleed, can stun, can blight, can bleed, can shuffle, and has fantastic camping skills that neutralize practically everything ever. Bringing a plague doctor solves so many stress enemies, the enemy healers and so on. It is amazing to see a boss take 14-18 damage a turn from being blighted and bleeding, she can actually reach the annoying bosses like the hag and so on. With these three characters I feel like I have options, like I always have a tool for any given problem. Whatever the situation, either of the characters can do something to help, something that stacks the odds in our favour. Characters I dislike... the man-at-arms, as I keep thinking he should be doing damage (which I know is not his thing), the abomination as I always find him underwhelming aaand maybe the bounty hunter. The only character I ever fired. I like him a lot more now that I use him for utility foremost, and not for damage dealing.
Honourary mention to the Crusader. Always fun, and has my favourite support heal. Health heal, stress heal and torchlight?Now that is a bargain of a skill. Stunning, critting for absurd damage, he is my go to frontliner. Yes, even if I give him holy lance. Being shuffled and holy lancing the shuffler is so rewarding.
I think Im the only person that runs jester as a dancer bleeder rather than a buff tool, Im not that experienced with dd so maybe Im just reading it wrong but I play him for daggers + finale
Honestly I think I’ll always have a soft spot for vestal bc as I’m getting into the game she absolutely carries, but I’m also starting to really love my plague doctor!! Idk if I didn’t have my plague doctor for my first boss that I ever fought I probably wouldn’t have been able to kill them with the skills I have. I just kept stacking blight and they died in like 5 turns, even when my other characters couldn’t reach them bc they got so much damage from blight
I find Jester useless everywhere except for endless harvest , where he is the best support there ,mostly because your party stay in one tile for hours.
I had the luck of getting a hot to trot vestal early and she was my favorite. I only healed while stalling the last round. Getting last hits is a way more efficient playstyle that reactive healing. I have tried a rank 2 build but I didn't enjoy it as much.
a quick top/bottom 3 heroes before I go to work; top 3 would be in order - occultist, jester and musketeer they're the classes that I like with my playstyle of unrelenting offense (i know thats not what you think with musketeer/arbalest but having a healer that can deal lots of damage like flag is so awesome) I don't really have a "bottom 3" but my least favorite hero to bring is Vestal, she's so slow, her stun is so weak compared to everyone else and she doesn't deal nearly enough damage. Yeah, she can heal but I'd much rather stun/kill the enemy party before they even get a chance to attack, I don't like risking crits and letting stress pile up. I'll level her up to 6 for DD2 and then never bring her anywhere else. Even in farmstead, I'd rather just use her slot to bring someone with an actually good stun i.e abom or occultist.
As someone who likes Jester, I respect your opinion on the jester and I understand where you're coming from cause he is just a buffer and stress healer. The finale is rather gimmicky rarely used it. But when he saves the team from heart attacks, he saves them with a stress heal that stops them from going insane. The funny thing is I have mine some dodge trinkets and he's about as untouchable next to my grave robber and Highwayman and it's funny how the enemy always go for him. Highwayman is another favorite of mine. This guy is an all purpose fighter. Need a sniper? No problem he's got you covered. Need a melee fighter? Waaay ahead of you. The damage he delivers can turn to decent to holy shit my guy what the fuck is that damage?! He's someone I mostly use when I don't have a grave robber. Grave robber is my number 1 favorite hero cause she does disgusting crit damage than any other hero I have. Fun fact if you used her stealth ability and use her forward attack, it's mostly a guarantee crit or does serious normal damage. Killed alot of bosses with this tactic Now for my least favorite...oh man this is tricky. The leper...uuuuugggghhh...how I hate having this guy early. This guy will miss his attacks again and again and again. He seems more useful mid or end game missions cause having my early is a damn nightmare. The antiquarian...her attacks suck and some buffs that I swear feels like an escort mission for her. Nuff said. And finally the occultist...I wouldn't say he's bad since he can really help the team out my problem is that his heal really grinds my gears...it's a game of chance where I am crossing my fingers hoping he gives a good heal and not get bleed. Most of times I get zero heals and get bleed while other times I do get the heals and not get bleeds(but sometimes you're gonna bleed sooner or later even if you heal).
Only about 10 > hours in the game. My fav teams are using Double Helion up front and GR 3rd and Occultist/Houndmaster at the back. Killed the Wizend hag and necromancer apprentice. Or PD 4th, Occultist 3rd, HWM 2nd, and helion 1st. Killed the 8 pounder with this.
I can't say I fully understand the flagellant as he's very straightforward I feel: He heals when necessary and otherwise just hits. But then I remembered that my top 3 would be the same as yours only with flagellant swapped for hellion (adrenaline, bleed out/wicked hack/yawp, if it bleeds, iron swan) and you certainly don't need a nobel prize in order to play her. xD
Sometimes your favorite doesn't have to be the best. I love using GR because she's so fun, but I think she's one of the bottom classes because she has awful HP. Abomination is also a pet class of mine. I consider Man-at-Arms one of my favorites, though. He deals a respectable amount of damage despite being a support/tank, and has pretty good reach with his basic attack. Can stun, guard, and riposte. His camp skills are also insane for buffs. I'd rather have a team of three Man-at-Arms and a Vestal/Occultist over any team with one Arbalest.
my main team so far is.... (from first to fourth) Man at Arms Crusader Vestal and Occultist... there are alot of awesome characters in this game... everyone seems to work and have a purpose... its like peaces of a puzzle
I love Abom (cuz were-beasts are cool) so I also love Man-At-Arms and Occultist because back in the day they were a good tank and healer who would party up with him.
I'm kinda surprised Highwayman wasn't in your top 3. The Occultist is cool and all, but with how much you praise the Highwayman, I figured the only one that could top him would be Grave Robber. Though I will say your top 3 are more diverse this way
When I had my first playthrough, naming heroes after my real life friends and people who I know personally, my favorite heroes were: Jester, Houndmaster, Hellion and Occultist (it was 2015 or 2016, I don't remember exactly). Now, when I have hundreds of hours played I don't have favorites. My first thing to do in a new playthrough is to max barracks and get as many heroes and class as I can and try to have fun with compositions. I really can't say that I like this one more than the other one anymore. But I have to mention that I'm trying to avoid boring heroes as much as possible. Ballad Jester, stunbot/healer Vestal and op shieldbreaker are no no for me. It's more enjoyable for me to run multiple antiquarian in one squad, flagellant or more complex heroes like Marvin Seo's Sisters.
Personally, I find it so hard to make a list like this. Heroes can be so cool on their own and enable such unique strats. Their lore is pretty good as well. Red Hook did a masterful job creating them all. The only moments 2 I feel kindda meh towards a hero: 1 - when they had an ability that feels so unnecessarily overpowered that you feel that you need to play it in a certain way (holy lance being stronger than iron swan, dismas's riposte breaking damage balance, occultist TRIPLE stun potential) 2 - or when you pay attention to skills that are too bland or repetitive (dual jester bleeds, graverobber's flashing daggers, arbalest's malfunctioning bolas...)
My fav is shieldbraker By far most versatile and fun jack of all trades hero, my fav comp is occ-jester-man at arms- shieldbraker Also aside from cristalinne spear is there any trinket that gives her dmg and hp? Or any defensive stat?
Candle feels good on her, imho. No hp, but... Dmg, dodge, speed. Works really well with a spear, at least if you have training ring already. And you can always give cuirbolli and legendary bracer to your second shieldbreaker, because, you know... Best dance is always in duette X)
Antiquarian, jester, hound master, grave robber Maxed out with crit % and dodge And run a dodge tank team with good back to back finishing moves and Regen if attacks go through
Bit of a discussion point, I find some amazing enjoyment from a bleed/mark hybrid team with mods. Healer/Falconer/Thorn/Flagellant is one of, if not, my favorite team to ever use with mods. The bleed ticks are awesome, the debuffs are amazing, Thorn just does everything necessary, truly amazing, would recommend those two mods alone. Oh yeah Shuffle, which of the modded characters do you like? I find the Marvin Seo/S-Purple mods to be amazing fun to work with, as well as the Thorn after learning her.
@@ShuffleFM Thorn is great. From the same guy who made the Snake Charmer. Interesting backstory that's also relevant for gameplay. She is blind so she has low accuracy with most things and she is terrible at disarming traps. And there are several ways to play her, varying between offensive and defensive/support.
I almost ragequit with the defensive Thorn, she has brilliant ripostes though. Add an antiquarian for the guarding and she keeps swinging until she hits something. And she cuts like a Highwayman, she is a brilliant boss killer if you can reduce their dodge or mark them.
Love graverobber to, in my next playthorugh i will use the dlcs so i can more of a dancer team with the extra classes, currently i use her with plague doc and its my fav duo in the game, it feels great when you stack a 14 blight dot on the boss then the graverobber buffed by shade step lunges and crits, so much damage stacking with bonus and dots
If antiquarian's party dodge buff lasted 4 turns instead of 3, I would totally use her, of course she'd literally just be buffing dodge EVERY. SINGLE. TURN. But she'd be useful then. The only other use of her is you stack dodge on her then when the monsters attack, there's a 25% chance the atk does nothing cause she'll more than likely dodge the atk. But yea anti blows, come on +35dodge but such a decrease in ACC
They should've made buffs non-stackable (the same skill shouldn't stack with itself) and balanced them around that, it would improve the game tremendously imo.
My favorite is leper And highwayman and I don’t know why but like every other hit as a crit for 32 damage just makes me feels as if he wanted to he could murder everyone from DD without even trying so long as he had jester by his side
Finally someone who appreciates the occultist!! Too many people bitch about his spotty healing and ignore the fact that he's so versatile. Also heal at half health, at the latest. Stop being greedy.

How do you know which characters the enemies are gonna hit? Cause in my game she always gets focused :c
@@Ekair42 dunno. I guess enemies do some calculations and dont choose targets they have lower chances to hit. To me it seems like she somehow have lower priority than other guys.
@@Ekair42 to quote the almighty shuff "do you even shadowfade tho?!" Stealth and being in the back helps a lot if you're getting focused, also having a character with guard is helpful.
Hellion is by far my favorite. Iron swan is such a satisfying ability to use.

Jester, just let go of your preconceived notions and spam Harvest. The Jester has best lines of any player character weather its crits, campfires, or afflictions, the backstory comic is awesome as well. Love his sfx when he attacks, and repositioning can Move anywhere. True, he's a bit boring as support for stuff like endless, but does a damn good job of it. Truly amusing.
Also, I really love Jester's character design. In general, I really love that in this game, but dual-wielding a sickle and a dagger with that faceless mask? Awesome.
Not my absolute favorite class aesthetics-wise (that is probably Plague Doctor or Shield Breaker), but definitely up there. As for mechanics, dunno, I suck at the game. But I'm learning. :P
My favorite is definitely highwayman, he is just such a badass, every skill he uses looks epic and he punishes every attack on him with his riposte, i once landed a 4 times riposte crit in a row.
He also looks scarier that the monsters and demons.
Yeah highwayman DPS busted. It's also hella nice to put two of them in the front and let them back to back point blank shot to melt through the front rows
HWM is basically John Wick of Darkest Dungeon :)

This is why I believe that DD is designed really well, especially on the characters aspect. Man-at-arms is one of my favorites but I can accept your viewpoint on him a 100%.
Likewise I can understand that you and others would enjoy him. Effective tanking and support is fun to do, and he has solid options for damage.
Bounty hunter is my favorite. He can stun, shuffle, mark and do big snort damage. He can be placed in any ranks but 4 and can fit in almost any team.
I usually have 4 hellions and 4 bounty hunters on my roster. I love these 2 together. I do like the hellion better but Hunter is right there
The BH is such a badass character that have no fear to face anyone: giant, fiend, bandit...he have one tool for each situation like the Witcher. Obs.: I use a Witcher skin on my Bounty Hunter.
I like the Arbalest/Musketeer too with her crits and support habilites

That's the two of us. Finally got to succeed in the first assault at the Darkest Dungeon yesterday! I stopped for a while because I failed like 3 times
My favorite team will always be the one I first encountered the Collector with. It was Helion 1rst, Crusaders as 2&3, Plague doctor back. Both Crusaders with Holy Lance, Stunning Blow, stress heal and heals. Works like a charm. You absolutely obliterate the back lines with Helion and Holy Lance. Plague doc stuns the two back liners, 2nd crusader the front. Its an hilarious team comp, watching the crusaders taking turn on lunging into the frey, dealing with backlines, stunning the front, et bis repetitam.
Tho the strategy was good, the Collector profited of my overconfidence. His second highwayman struck an absurd 41 crit on the 3 liner... I did not killed them fast enough. Lost only this one but learned in blood that *overconfidence is sometimes a surprisingly fast killer*
I love Shield Breaker.
She can hit anything from anywhere without caring about PROT. And that's valuable. Adder's Kiss, Captivate and Puncture are also absolute powerhouse skills.
I got two as the weekly event in week 2, always using both of them. It is hilarious to see their reach, the damage, the AoE, the blight. They just dance around each other, ripping through the enemy lines.
I just recently came up with combo of all my fav characters. Hellion in the front, GR second, mostly for flashing daggers and then throwing daggers, Jester with bleed skills (you see the anihilation of the middle ranks?) and Occultist in the back. I've never had more fun.

My favorite team is probably shieldbreaker,highwayman,grave robber and vestal.The ability to hit every enemy position is just so much fun.
I actually got into situation when I told myself that using Antiquarian for fight is essential and it was after losing multiple times against Countess, so I tried dodge strategy and finally won using her Invigorating Vapors.
Congrats! If you ever try that fight again, using a team with 3 or 4 sets of heavy boots and Leper is surprisingly strong.
For the houndmaster, the self-heal and the guard is what keeps him from being boring. Also, a good pupper for camping.
I personally love control Bounty Hunter. You can pull an enemy forward and mark, you can push an enemy back and stun and you can shuffle stun on top of decent tankiness and damage.
Love nothing more than seeing a carefully balanced enemy lineup, with one move cripple 1-3 enemies damage output and then watch them stumble back into order while the rest if the team obliterates.
Me: Yeah, I might recruit a Graverobber I guess. Sounds good

My favorite Character to play has and always will be Crusader. Not because he’s practical, but I’ve always been fascinated by the Templar, Crusades, and all that. I suppose he makes a great Paladin if played right, as well.
Plague doctor
Vestal used to be my favourite. Then I learned that there actually was other healers in the game. So now it is close between HWM, Occultist, Flagellant and Jester.
My favorite party is antiquarian/highwayman/man at arms/graverobber. And those are my favorite heroes.
Typically use fade and protect me turn 1, riposte and clean u whatever remains on the 2nd/3rd turns. Fights are fast enough that antiquarian heals just fine especially with the right trinkets. Or just use some food to patch up after a rough battle.
For boss fights use the antiquarian's blight for GR to do uber crits out of stealth. This party can bulldoze through collectors, shamblers, vvulf and more that I cant remember.
And really I started using this party based on what I learned from shuffle's videos.
First time I tried GR I ran the lunge fade build against the pigs
She critted them so hard she finished the mission with Syphilis somehow

Your description of the flagellant sounds like my absolute favorite hero, the Buried.
She erratic, explosive, and self destructive. Her attacks cause her stress or horror, and has a chance of giving her a breakdown. Which results in other, more destructive moves that stress out the rest of the party.
She has the feature of doing extra damage while stressed, and has her own affliction. Her item is laudinum.
All in all, she is an ex-crusader with severe PTSD and every part of her reflects it.
It fits beautifully together. Unreliable, autodestructs at times, and has completely wrecked a boss or two. Riposte + horror is brutal, just hope she kills the enemy before she has a heart attack.
My favourites: Abom, hellion and shieldbreaker. Honourable mentions go to plague doctor and occultist.

I know right! IMO finale is the single most satisfying skill in the game. On my first try against the miller my jester crited for like 60 damage against one of those lvl 3 2-sized worm monsters (sorry for not knowing the name), one-shoting it from full hp, even tho being underequipped with a level. Too bad that it counts as one battle during the whole expedition, i should have saved finale for the miller, im pretty sure my jester could have killed him with a single ability
I think the reason I like Flag so much is my favorite Borderlands character is Krieg so I'm already kinda addicted to risk vs reward gameplay.
Good lord i love the leper. Couple accuracy buffs or items and the man turns into a human conveyor belt with a wood chipper at the end of it.

I get your mechanical/gameplay gripes with jester but man I love his design and lore so goddamn much that I can’t help but use him. I wish he had a backward moving skill that wasn’t finale, so you could play him as a dancer that builds up to the huge big damage nuke that was a bit more self sufficient instead of requiring a full dance team for that.
Something I started doing recently was running him with crusader so he can ballad turn 1, then holy lance and dirk stab dance for the rest of the fight. You've probably tried that already but it's surprisingly okay.
@@ShuffleFM huh! I’ll give it a shot! I’m all for running unorthodox comps, as I’m overall really new to the game and still figuring out what works, but that sounds like a blast. I always wanted to get more mileage out of dirk stab. In places like the cove where it’s important to bypass guards and the like, I figure it could be quite strong.
Only time I really liked the Jester was with the Harlot (modded), they are both dancing bleeders and supporters. Ended up taking maybe 30 turns to take out that bandit cannon but I had no risk of losing.

Btw, in that first clip, why did you kill the hateful Virago last? I thought it's important to focus down the spellcasters first. Especially since the virago kept reviving stuff and blocking healing.
My favorites would have to be Jester, Highwayman and Crusador, recently though Abomination has grown on me.
I find Jester incredibly fun and his thematic is great, the fact that I can finish off low hp guarded enemies with a 20 crit Dirk stab makes me smile and moments like when I managed to kill my first Shrieker with a 70 Finaly crit makes my brain produce happy hormone.
Highwayman is just cool and I love how Crusador isn't just "sword dude" but actually can be built to support his team.
Also can I just say that the barks/text/personalities that these characters have is top notch? It makes me love them all even more.
Favorite hero: my BH with hot to trot and photomania locked, and who had rabies for that sweet extra damage. Critted the swine king for 50 twice in a row before getting rekt in his first deaths door check. I cried so hard.
For real now:
Favs for me are HWM, BH and depending on the day Hellion or Crusader.
Least favs: Arbalest (except for the swine prince/king/god, ive learnt my lesson) and antiquarian.
The hound master is really good tho.. his aoe stress heal is really good his hound harry in the warrens or Weald is actual filth if u build a bleed line up. He marks , his guard is fantastic even his main attack is good and even can stun or heal depends how you wanna take him . His camping skills are great. I feel like he is very versatile utility character.

My top 3 are definitely Bounty hunter, Occultist and Hound master usually in that team topped off with a Vestal or Arbalest. I love mark teams and Bounty hunter criting for 70 up to 90 damage with the CC trinket and Hound master's bleed and Occultist's stun was the most fun I had with my bloodmoon campaign.
Grave Robber has become one of my favorites for the reasons you mentioned. I love pairing her with Shieldbreaker. Bounty Hunter is my other favorite especially when paired with another marker and another stunner. The high damage and crits just flow

Graverobber is really fun to play, but my nr 1 has to be the highway man. Nothing in this game feels better than dodging an incoming attack and dealing high double digit damage with the riposte.
Bounty hunter for me tbh, like 30% of my parties are just huntsman corps with arbalest-vestal-houndmaster-bounty hunter and they just spam out >40 damage mark crits all day long.
Good stuns on vestal and houndmaster too, bounty hunter can pull in backliners, arbalest can buff healing while vestal party heals with two heal boost trinkets, almost everyone can mark and boost damage on marked. Brilliant.
I don’t know why I’ve been enjoying it so much, but running Antiquarian in rank one or two and shuffling her around with highwayman and crusader and then anything with a little heal or good cc-general reposte first turn and dodge trinkets, and I feel like I can always make the enemies aim and miss at the characters I want them to. I just feel like a puppet master, and still get to take advantage of crusader’a support skills each fight after an initial holy lance-
The AI manipulation might just be in my head, but it still feels so succinct and nice.
And Antiquarian is absolutely the main character.

It think my list would be very similar. Thanks to you, it became much easier to give myself permission to enjoy and focus on playing my favorite characters even more. Because, silly enough, I was thinking my play must be too suboptimal if I like them :)

With that being said, I have found a use for MAA in regular dungeons: if you take him for medium to longs dungeons, not only is he good for a support if you play him in rank 4 with that one class trinket and Barristans' head, you can use his camp skills to buff your damage dealers so most encounters last 2 turns
I think my favourite individual class is probably Occultist because he complements my playstyle so well. Acts as a healer, decent backline damage, debuff, stun and mark. Works well for the rest of my crew.
But my favourite crew set up is 100% "The Wall" for pure meme value

Fav has gotta be Occultist for me. Arguably the most versatile character in the game. Can slot in literally anywhere on any comp and bring a lot to the team. Marks, amazing stun, debuffs, Eldritch slaying, emergency heals.
For least... MAA by far. I struggle to find non boss missions to bring him along for. So much so, that I often don’t have one trained up for those boss missions where he is actually useful.
I'm in the same boat as you, got a level 6 man-at-arms from the experienced hero event. I'm still holding him idle in town maybe for vvulf, but idk man. I'm going to try him again with ancestor's pistol and rank 4 trinket.
The MAA in boss missions is needed mostly for guarding. In regular missions he is more useful in a team that allows or needs some movement so he can stun (which moves him forward). So something like HWM and SB works well
@@S_Black I hear you, but his single target Stun isn’t really that remarkable compared to the likes of Occultist or Abom (especially if they have trinkets). Also I want my stunner to generally be fast which either hurts MAA
I use HM to either Nuke bosses or High Threat enemies (Skivvers) Dog Biscuits are insane for some burst damage. Effectiveness further amplified in mark teams, but I don’t use those all the time

It does play the same every match though.
Battleballad, maa repost, protect me on maa.
Solo, bolster, invigorating vapors.
The trio gives high dodge and high crits.
It turns your fourth man into a beast.
Bounty Hunter is my favourite. Good damage, good stuns and enemy movement. And looks absolutely badass.
Favourite heroes? Official ones I assume? If I were to pick three they would be the antiquarian, the occultist and the plague doctor. For the Antiquarian, sure she isn't a damage dealer or a great healer. She can however complement stunners to neutralize giants, ghouls and crabs with ease. The fact that flashpowder is a debuff and not a stun is amazing, she is also decent enough to blight enemies that just barely survived that huge critical hit. A support healer, has a key and lovely little camping skills. I even bring her to some bosses, like the big blind pig.
The Occultist has an amazing comic, cool artstyle, is an explosive healer, can out-tentacle the cultists, can mark, remove enemy protection or dodge, can stun... So handy, suddenly the low accuracy, high damage classes will start working properly. Besides, there is something about fighting fire with fire. Or sorcery with sorcery.
And then the Plague Doctor. She has a cool outfit, is invaluable against bleed, can stun, can blight, can bleed, can shuffle, and has fantastic camping skills that neutralize practically everything ever. Bringing a plague doctor solves so many stress enemies, the enemy healers and so on. It is amazing to see a boss take 14-18 damage a turn from being blighted and bleeding, she can actually reach the annoying bosses like the hag and so on.
With these three characters I feel like I have options, like I always have a tool for any given problem. Whatever the situation, either of the characters can do something to help, something that stacks the odds in our favour. Characters I dislike... the man-at-arms, as I keep thinking he should be doing damage (which I know is not his thing), the abomination as I always find him underwhelming aaand maybe the bounty hunter. The only character I ever fired. I like him a lot more now that I use him for utility foremost, and not for damage dealing.
Honourary mention to the Crusader. Always fun, and has my favourite support heal. Health heal, stress heal and torchlight?Now that is a bargain of a skill. Stunning, critting for absurd damage, he is my go to frontliner. Yes, even if I give him holy lance. Being shuffled and holy lancing the shuffler is so rewarding.
Favored classes are Occultist, Crusader, and Abomination. Honorable mentions are Graverobber, Plague Doctor, and Leper.
I think Im the only person that runs jester as a dancer bleeder rather than a buff tool, Im not that experienced with dd so maybe Im just reading it wrong but I play him for daggers + finale
Honestly I think I’ll always have a soft spot for vestal bc as I’m getting into the game she absolutely carries, but I’m also starting to really love my plague doctor!! Idk if I didn’t have my plague doctor for my first boss that I ever fought I probably wouldn’t have been able to kill them with the skills I have. I just kept stacking blight and they died in like 5 turns, even when my other characters couldn’t reach them bc they got so much damage from blight
I find Jester useless everywhere except for endless harvest , where he is the best support there ,mostly because your party stay in one tile for hours.

I had the luck of getting a hot to trot vestal early and she was my favorite. I only healed while stalling the last round. Getting last hits is a way more efficient playstyle that reactive healing. I have tried a rank 2 build but I didn't enjoy it as much.
a quick top/bottom 3 heroes before I go to work;
top 3 would be in order - occultist, jester and musketeer they're the classes that I like with my playstyle of unrelenting offense (i know thats not what you think with musketeer/arbalest but having a healer that can deal lots of damage like flag is so awesome)
I don't really have a "bottom 3" but my least favorite hero to bring is Vestal, she's so slow, her stun is so weak compared to everyone else and she doesn't deal nearly enough damage. Yeah, she can heal but I'd much rather stun/kill the enemy party before they even get a chance to attack, I don't like risking crits and letting stress pile up. I'll level her up to 6 for DD2 and then never bring her anywhere else. Even in farmstead, I'd rather just use her slot to bring someone with an actually good stun i.e abom or occultist.
my favorite is probably houndmaster or crusader. They can almost fit in any role. They can double stun etc
As someone who likes Jester, I respect your opinion on the jester and I understand where you're coming from cause he is just a buffer and stress healer. The finale is rather gimmicky rarely used it. But when he saves the team from heart attacks, he saves them with a stress heal that stops them from going insane. The funny thing is I have mine some dodge trinkets and he's about as untouchable next to my grave robber and Highwayman and it's funny how the enemy always go for him.
Highwayman is another favorite of mine. This guy is an all purpose fighter. Need a sniper? No problem he's got you covered. Need a melee fighter? Waaay ahead of you. The damage he delivers can turn to decent to holy shit my guy what the fuck is that damage?! He's someone I mostly use when I don't have a grave robber.
Grave robber is my number 1 favorite hero cause she does disgusting crit damage than any other hero I have. Fun fact if you used her stealth ability and use her forward attack, it's mostly a guarantee crit or does serious normal damage. Killed alot of bosses with this tactic
Now for my least favorite...oh man this is tricky.
The leper...uuuuugggghhh...how I hate having this guy early. This guy will miss his attacks again and again and again. He seems more useful mid or end game missions cause having my early is a damn nightmare.
The antiquarian...her attacks suck and some buffs that I swear feels like an escort mission for her. Nuff said.
And finally the occultist...I wouldn't say he's bad since he can really help the team out my problem is that his heal really grinds my gears...it's a game of chance where I am crossing my fingers hoping he gives a good heal and not get bleed. Most of times I get zero heals and get bleed while other times I do get the heals and not get bleeds(but sometimes you're gonna bleed sooner or later even if you heal).
Only about 10 > hours in the game.
My fav teams are using Double Helion up front and GR 3rd and Occultist/Houndmaster at the back. Killed the Wizend hag and necromancer apprentice.
Or PD 4th, Occultist 3rd, HWM 2nd, and helion 1st. Killed the 8 pounder with this.
I can't say I fully understand the flagellant as he's very straightforward I feel: He heals when necessary and otherwise just hits.
But then I remembered that my top 3 would be the same as yours only with flagellant swapped for hellion (adrenaline, bleed out/wicked hack/yawp, if it bleeds, iron swan) and you certainly don't need a nobel prize in order to play her. xD
Sometimes your favorite doesn't have to be the best. I love using GR because she's so fun, but I think she's one of the bottom classes because she has awful HP. Abomination is also a pet class of mine.
I consider Man-at-Arms one of my favorites, though. He deals a respectable amount of damage despite being a support/tank, and has pretty good reach with his basic attack. Can stun, guard, and riposte. His camp skills are also insane for buffs. I'd rather have a team of three Man-at-Arms and a Vestal/Occultist over any team with one Arbalest.
my main team so far is.... (from first to fourth) Man at Arms Crusader Vestal and Occultist... there are alot of awesome characters in this game... everyone seems to work and have a purpose... its like peaces of a puzzle
I love Abom (cuz were-beasts are cool) so I also love Man-At-Arms and Occultist because back in the day they were a good tank and healer who would party up with him.

I'm kinda surprised Highwayman wasn't in your top 3. The Occultist is cool and all, but with how much you praise the Highwayman, I figured the only one that could top him would be Grave Robber. Though I will say your top 3 are more diverse this way
Heh, my top 3 is pretty similar with only one exception: Highwayman, Flagellant and Occultist. Love playing those three.
I think the Occultist should come with a key, as a reference to Randolph Carter.
When I had my first playthrough, naming heroes after my real life friends and people who I know personally, my favorite heroes were: Jester, Houndmaster, Hellion and Occultist (it was 2015 or 2016, I don't remember exactly). Now, when I have hundreds of hours played I don't have favorites. My first thing to do in a new playthrough is to max barracks and get as many heroes and class as I can and try to have fun with compositions. I really can't say that I like this one more than the other one anymore. But I have to mention that I'm trying to avoid boring heroes as much as possible. Ballad Jester, stunbot/healer Vestal and op shieldbreaker are no no for me. It's more enjoyable for me to run multiple antiquarian in one squad, flagellant or more complex heroes like Marvin Seo's Sisters.
Unpopular opinion: Abomination. There’s nothing more satisfying than building a really good “hulk smash” comp and going shambler hunting.
Personally, I find it so hard to make a list like this. Heroes can be so cool on their own and enable such unique strats. Their lore is pretty good as well. Red Hook did a masterful job creating them all.
The only moments 2 I feel kindda meh towards a hero:
1 - when they had an ability that feels so unnecessarily overpowered that you feel that you need to play it in a certain way (holy lance being stronger than iron swan, dismas's riposte breaking damage balance, occultist TRIPLE stun potential)
2 - or when you pay attention to skills that are too bland or repetitive (dual jester bleeds, graverobber's flashing daggers, arbalest's malfunctioning bolas...)
My fav is shieldbraker
By far most versatile and fun jack of all trades hero, my fav comp is occ-jester-man at arms- shieldbraker
Also aside from cristalinne spear is there any trinket that gives her dmg and hp? Or any defensive stat?
Candle feels good on her, imho. No hp, but... Dmg, dodge, speed. Works really well with a spear, at least if you have training ring already. And you can always give cuirbolli and legendary bracer to your second shieldbreaker, because, you know... Best dance is always in duette X)

Antiquarian, jester, hound master, grave robber
Maxed out with crit % and dodge
And run a dodge tank team with good back to back finishing moves and Regen if attacks go through
Bit of a discussion point, I find some amazing enjoyment from a bleed/mark hybrid team with mods.
Healer/Falconer/Thorn/Flagellant is one of, if not, my favorite team to ever use with mods. The bleed ticks are awesome, the debuffs are amazing, Thorn just does everything necessary, truly amazing, would recommend those two mods alone.
Oh yeah Shuffle, which of the modded characters do you like? I find the Marvin Seo/S-Purple mods to be amazing fun to work with, as well as the Thorn after learning her.
Darkwraith and Alchemist were ones I had a lot of fun with. Don't think I've played Thorn.

Thorn is great. From the same guy who made the Snake Charmer. Interesting backstory that's also relevant for gameplay. She is blind so she has low accuracy with most things and she is terrible at disarming traps. And there are several ways to play her, varying between offensive and defensive/support.
I almost ragequit with the defensive Thorn, she has brilliant ripostes though. Add an antiquarian for the guarding and she keeps swinging until she hits something. And she cuts like a Highwayman, she is a brilliant boss killer if you can reduce their dodge or mark them.
All in all, the Thorn is in top 3 mod classes for me.
Love graverobber to, in my next playthorugh i will use the dlcs so i can more of a dancer team with the extra classes, currently i use her with plague doc and its my fav duo in the game, it feels great when you stack a 14 blight dot on the boss then the graverobber buffed by shade step lunges and crits, so much damage stacking with bonus and dots
If antiquarian's party dodge buff lasted 4 turns instead of 3, I would totally use her, of course she'd literally just be buffing dodge EVERY. SINGLE. TURN. But she'd be useful then. The only other use of her is you stack dodge on her then when the monsters attack, there's a 25% chance the atk does nothing cause she'll more than likely dodge the atk. But yea anti blows, come on +35dodge but such a decrease in ACC
Yeah the antiquarian is definitely not for survival and combat when stacked up to the other characters, but that CASH MONEY BABEY
They should've made buffs non-stackable (the same skill shouldn't stack with itself) and balanced them around that, it would improve the game tremendously imo.
BH is the best for me. I want that finger to put the fear into every creature i see LOL
My favorite is leper And highwayman and I don’t know why but like every other hit as a crit for 32 damage just makes me feels as if he wanted to he could murder everyone from DD without even trying so long as he had jester by his side
Finally someone who appreciates the occultist!! Too many people bitch about his spotty healing and ignore the fact that he's so versatile. Also heal at half health, at the latest. Stop being greedy.
Rank 2 Bonk Vestal is so underestimated and underused it almost makes me sad.
GR can also remove diseases when Camping like PD.
