Great review Pete! The DR is just a top bike, absolutely love mine. Simple, basic, competent and reliable machine that's great fun to ride anywhere. Don't have to fiddle with traction control or ride modes, just hop on, hit the magic button and twist the throttle. And by all accounts they are now pretty well bulletproof. What more could you want!
🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate love the DRasauras 650. I have a few 2016 & 2019 models. The 2016 did 115000 kms with a full service history then developed a timing change noise. I then took it to the mechanic and unfortunately he destroyed my engine completely . Apart from the mishap prior the bike had no issues and went fine. The 2nd bike did 65000 kms and it blew a head gasket. Unfortunately the next mechanic cooked my engine and it costed me about $1800 to rectify the problems. I’ve now done an additional 8000 kms and it’s going great. Great video , great bikes and I can’t wait to get another one🇦🇺🏁
G"Day Big Trev, Thanks for your Comment, and Bummer about your 2 DR650's. I absolutely love the DR. Hope to do another review soon, I now have 21K km on Boris. Has not let me down, so reliable. Regards FPPete.
Love your review Pete. 10,000 in under 12 months, great going mate. I love my DR, planning some weekend camping here and there. Just got to get a few things and off I go. Keep up the good work mate..
When I first started the video, I was thinking, I know that voice, it sounds like Pete! And sure enough it is! Lol.. I recognized your voice from when you visit Mark on biker bits. Great review on the DR650 by the way. I have one too, had it for about five years, done a lot of fun rides from Texas to New Mexico, and Colorado, then take her off-road once there, great bike! Anyway, didn't know about this channel of yours, so just subscribed!
Thanks heaps Bill, your spot on mate, the Tanami edition was good value that I could not refuse. And the Dr650 is such a great dual sport bike. Regards Pete.
Thanks Pete. I just talked my buddy down in the US Smoky Mtns (N. Carolina) into picking up (yesterday) a very clean DR650 as his first bike. He's a bit intimidated, but as an expert bicyclist he's got a good start. First thing he's talking about is dropping the gearing a few teeth... he's worried that Stock will be too fast for his mile-long, mountain driveway.. rock-strewn. He's currently a man on fire, and studying everything he can find. Thanks for your suggestions above!
My Pleasure, glad you guys are enjoying the DR650. I have just put a new exhaust on, and it has transformed the bike. keep an eye out for up coming episode on Biker Bits. regards Pete.

Great review Pete. You are certainly getting the miles up. DR is still looking shmick. Lowering your pegs is a great idea. They look kinda high. Not only will it lower you on the bike when standing, bringing you closer to the bars. It will make the transition from seated to standing so much easier at the end of a long day in the bush. I suffer from old man knees. 😟 Keep em coming Marty 👍
I bought a new dr650 in 95' I took it on a long interstate cruise 450 miles and by the time I hit around the 375 mile mark I had to hang my arse off to the side the rest of the way. Great bike, I rode it 12,000 miles w/o even adjusting the valves. Tough bike.
lowering the pegs was the best thing i ever did to my bike! way more comfortable on the highway and no more spongey feeling when you're standing on the pegs. just make sure to get the adapters that don't hang below the bike.
I have since installed the Procycle lower pegs, And love em. has improved the ergonomics as you say. A great mod for the DR650. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, really appreciated. Regards FPPete.
I loved my DR and aim to get another one. They need a bigger tank and better seat but I found I could live with the rest of the bike as-is. My only complaint about it mechanically was the first gear needed to be lower for walking it over logs and through rocky streams, and the top gear needed to be taller to keep the RPMs lower on the freeway. That was about it.
Hi D.C. The DR650 is such a good bike to own. Yes a bigger tank, better seat, and a slip on muffler, some tires, and your pretty much done. Regards FPPete.
@cogordoo yes. But that only fixes half the issue, and you've made the problem of first gear being too high even worse. They need to go in and change the gears inside the transmission to make it more versatile and match real dual sport riding. A first gear that can handle walking the bike over trail obstacles and a top gear that can handle current highway speed limits of 80 mph for extended periods of time.
I'm an older newbie. Spent a little time learning to ride on a tw200 this year. Decided I'm upgrading to a dr650 next year. Your bike is sweet. Totally down with the look and mods you did on your dr. Great video. Thanks for your time and effort to make it. God bless.
Hi John, Glad you enjoyed the video. Your never too old to do anything, and motorcycling has so many benefits, both physically and mentally. You will love the DR650. Kind regards FPPete.
Hey Pete, great review mate, just upgraded my old 1985 DR600 for a 2020 DR650 pick it up tomorrow, really looking forward to getting a few rides in and making a few mods, biggest bonus for me, no more kick starting.
Interesting review Pete. I’m guessing the T7 isn’t getting a lot of love. Hope you don’t park them together. There would be some jealously induced fights in the garage between them.
Had mine since 2015. Its a great bike. A seat change is a must. It makes the bike a joy to ride anywhere. I built my own exhaust its a fraction of the original weight. The handle bars as standard are made of cheese and need changing. Bar risers needed too. Bigger tank essential. Its a simple no fuss bike and easy to upgrade. I have done the mods to the air filter and jetting which with the exhaust mods unleashes loads more power. I would love to upgrade the suspension as its not great.
Thanks heaps For your comment. Yep I'm sure most of us do the mods you mentioned. It's such a great bike to modify to your own personal liking. Regards FPPete.
Great review sir, the DR certainly is a great all round bike. I am in the same boat as you, own a T7 and a DR but much prefer the DR for the same reasons, the T7 is a little too tall and heavier to move around as easy as the DR. Just a quick observation, you have the rear axle the wrong way round, the axle needs to go in from the sprocket side, that way the snail adjusters sit at the top not the bottom , less chance of being hit by a rock.
Nice review just updated my full suspension on my dr650 unbelievable difference great alrounder very lucky get to ride my one as farm bike every day Cheers 🍻
Hi pete put the yss suspension top line on and heavy spring in frount made it like the T700 not that i have been on a T700 sate on one and my dr650 would be as Hi now its amazing to ride didn't think it would make a difference change the bike all so got aftermarket seat concept exhaust cycleworks made here in new Zealand keep up the good work Cheers 🍻
Honest review Pete , well spoken and informative . I'm looking forward to the 50k review . Crocodile ? Mate I thought it was an ice shelf until I put the short lookers on . Keep up the good work .
Been debating between this, the dRZ400 and the KLR 650. As the KLR 650 was recently weighed at 489 pounds, I think I am giving up on the KLR now. For desert roads, getting to those roads, and nothing too extreme anymore (67 years old) the DR650 may be the sweet spot!
@@FULLPELTAdventures Also I installed the Plex valves to front forks From FFRC as well as their 8kg rear spring. I weigh 90 Kgs, and what a difference, it is unreal. Check it out
@@FULLPELTAdventures No, kept the standard springs as I did not want the front to become too hard. To me it is perfect. I upgraded the fork oil to 10w. If you were in WA you could test mine, but I envy the tracks you and Mark are blessed with.

Until a manufacturer makes a modern 400-500cc dual sport, the dr650/xr650l will be the best adventure bike for touring the developed world, on and off road. Not getting rid of mine until the enduro 390 R comes out
I can't wait to get those maddog stickers on and see what insane performance they will bring to the Pig, let alone how friggin good Boris will look.🤣👍💀
Those case savers are probably the most valuable upgrade I made to my adventure DR. They've got some serious dents in them from where the levers have knocked against them after a fall. Reckon I'd have put a lever through the case without them installed.
EXCELLENT REVIEW. DR650/XR650L are the bikes you ride to a spot anywhere on the map and say....Yeah let's have a look around. Any modern bike is like a Tasmanian devil. What? next where , where, over there, no over here ok that way. Just slow down and enjoy the ride is why i choose the DR650 as my next bike.
Good stuff stuff Pete the bikes looking great. I still think about getting the dr one day, still love my drz for now. I have ridden out there a few times lots to explore, keep up the the great videos. Cheers Bazz.
Great clear common sense and real world review for real people. Nice one Pete. I was also flying round the Alice and Uluru area quite a few years ago and yea…. No crocs sighted. 😉👍🏻
Thanks TAR. the handle bar bag is a good option. Mine is small, so limited what you can put in it. Hopefully you can find one that suits your needs. Let me know what you get. Regards Pete.
I like Suzuki's hell no we're not gonna update the bike attitude. I bought a new dr200 and told the sales guy I like this bike, it's the exact same dam bike as the old 87 sp200 I used to have except this new one has electric start. Good old reliable bikes without the tech crap.
I am currently running Dunlop D606 front and rear. I had the perrelli mt21's. The mt21 are great tyre's. The rear tyre is good for about 4000km. In my opinion the best combo is mt21 front, and the D606 on rear. The MT21's were good on road and awesome offroad.
Nice video....both yourself and Mark have swayed me to a Dr650 I pick it up in 10 days or so. Just wondering what your thoughts are on tyres? I'll be chucking a d606 on the rear but can't decide between a d606 up front or a Pirelli MT21..combination of black top and dirt adventures are what i have in mind thanks again👍
thanks RFD, glad you enjoyed the video, and congrats on your new Pig. Your gonna love the DR650. Both the D606 and MT21 are great tyres. In my opinion, I would go the D606 on the rear and the MT21 on the front. Regards FPP.
Hi Pete, Great review video!! I'm thinking more & more of trying to track one of these down, albeit the older model. Only thing is they are like hens teeth over here in Ireland.. Shout out to Bones!! Ha. Awrabesht mate. 😉🏴👍
G'day Al, the Scotsman living in Ireland. Mate, the DR650 can do it all. On and off road. Try and get one that hasn't had carby, airbox, modifications, would be my tip. If the engine is in stock condition and been maintained it should be OK. Regards Pete/Bones.
Your thoughts on the DR vs T7 vs DRZ400 are appreciated. I’m still up in the air if I should replace my KLX300 with a DR or DRZ but your insight is helpful. I picked up a KTM 890 S and want a bike that I could use in its place, if I needed to. The KLX really is t up to doing the 500 miles in a day that I can rip off on the 890. I’m not sure I’m up for doing it in 2 days. 😂
@@FULLPELTAdventures Thank you for the reply Pete. I’m kinda snowed in from making it to a dealer that has both the DR and DRZ in stock. They are over the mountains from me and about three hours away on a good day. I’d love to get over there and have a look at them. Safe travels Pete!
I have not ridden a KLR, they may have an oil consumption issue. So do some homework for any issues. I love the DR650. It really suits me and my style and skill level. Try and test ride both and see what suits you. My choice would be the DR650. Good luck, regards Pete.
I would go with the DR. Have had one for 5 years from new. No doohickey to worry about, no oil burning, and 115 lbs. lighter than a '22 KLR. Put over 12,000 hard miles - not one problem. No computers, sensors. and made in Japan, not Thailand. Just my 2 cents.
Bloody great review Pete! Everything you mention is very relevant and true to the mighty bush pig.. They are such a joy to ride and the "KISS" factor definitely applies to this machine!! (Keep it simple stupid!) Haha!!
G`day Pete, great review, I was thinking with your foot pegs, can you take them off and mount them upside-down? you would have to remove the center pin and flip the footpegs over so the teeth are the right way up, would gain about five inches when standing up. although don't know what the gear leaver would be like with lowered pegs.
Great review and watching until you showed the Omni Cruize made it even better. I've been looking for something like that for a while. I've always liked the DR 650 the most out of the Japanese big dual sports. The T700 is Awesome too, but good luck getting hold of one around here, 😆.
Great review Pete, I've got a T7 which I love, but am debating a DR650 for more technical stuff. Im 5ft 10in and 74kg. (62yr old) So the T7 is a negative in Mud, unknown crossings and turning around in difficult situations. As you know once the T7 is rolling along, its insanely capable. Another on my hit list is maybe the Honda 300 rally if they ever become available :-) (Should have kept my WR250R) Chronicles of solid just had something on the rumour mill about a Yamaha 900 Triple ADV Bike, they all keep going in the wrong direction. 😭 The Dr650 certainly hits the sweet spot IMHO.
Totally agree with you mate. I feel real comfortable on the DR650. The Honda would be a good choice as well. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for your comments.
I grew up driving three wheelers four wheelers mini bikes. Also dirt bikes a handful of times. How much do y’all recommend this as a starter? keep in mind I would be riding mainly on road probably the i 94 i don’t want a road bike only though as I like to cruise dirt roads and with something like this if traffic was bad enough or I was bored enough we have trails along some of the county roads I could probably just hop ditches is this bike recommended?
Hi TS, The DR650 is a fantastic starter bike. Super reliable, loads of fun, and can do everything a motorcycle needs to do. Heaps of aftermarket accessories to choice from. I love the bike. I have 18000km on mine and just love riding it. Try and test ride one if you can, and be aware if it's too tall for you the bike can be easily lowered.

Thanks TAR. the handle bar bag is a good option. Mine is small, so limited what you can put in it. Hopefully you can find one that suits your needs. Let me know what you get. Regards Pete.
@@FULLPELTAdventures will do. Cheers 🍻
I like Suzuki's hell no we're not gonna update the bike attitude. I bought a new dr200 and told the sales guy I like this bike, it's the exact same dam bike as the old 87 sp200 I used to have except this new one has electric start. Good old reliable bikes without the tech crap.
Exactly right, got to love simplicity.
Subscribed are you running Pirelli MT21 tires if so how you like them on the pavement and how they do in gravel?
I am currently running Dunlop D606 front and rear. I had the perrelli mt21's. The mt21 are great tyre's. The rear tyre is good for about 4000km. In my opinion the best combo is mt21 front, and the D606 on rear. The MT21's were good on road and awesome offroad.
That was a good review mate
Thanks heaps Blake, appreciate your comments. Regards Pete.
@@FULLPELTAdventures my thoughts too👍 thanks mate
Next tyre change, try the D606 up front, then you will know what's best for you.
Yup, that's me mate. Ha.. I tried to send you a message via the crew site, but couldn't get you. 😉🏴👍
Both the DR and DRZ are top, reliable bikes. If you do long distances the DR will be more comfortable. RegardsFPPete.
Thanks Pete. I'm in between a DR 650 or a KLR? Being a new rider. Please advise. thank you.
Have you checked the valve clearance yet since you had it ?
Not yet, will do it at 12000km as per the service manual. Thanks for watching the video. regards FPP.
Bloody great review Pete! Everything you mention is very relevant and true to the mighty bush pig.. They are such a joy to ride and the "KISS" factor definitely applies to this machine!! (Keep it simple stupid!) Haha!!
Thanks heaps Pete, glad you enjoyed the video. Regards Pete.
Hi Michael, that low peg idea might just work. I wouldn't want them lower than the frame though. Regards Pete.
Great review and watching until you showed the Omni Cruize made it even better. I've been looking for something like that for a while. I've always liked the DR 650 the most out of the Japanese big dual sports. The T700 is Awesome too, but good luck getting hold of one around here, 😆.
Thanks David, The omni cruise is a must have product when distance riding. Regards Pete.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for your comments.
i like my dr650se. it very very kindly bike. Nice video
Thanks for watching the video, and yes the DR650 is such a great bike.
FIRST!!
Now that was fast.
@@FULLPELTAdventures Still watching now!
Mark would have to be first though 😂
Did you grease the steering head bearings?
Hi charles, No I haven't touched them. Most likely I will do it at 20k. I have had no issues so far. Currently got 18k on the clock. Regards FPPete.
First thing I did was the suspension, couldn’t stand the pogo affect bucking me off at any speed.
I'm sure it transforms the DR650 with the suspension upgrade. Regards Pete.
🇦🇺😎👍Boonah Queensland
Didn't mention the neutral sending screws, so I assume the rumor that they are installing them at factory with thread locker is true?
Hi Dex. As far as I'm aware there is no longer an issue. Regards Pete.
This was fixed in 2017, no longer requiring attention.
Over 100,000 KM on my 2015. and yep not stock seat.
100k that is impressive, They are such a great bike, I hope to keep my DR for ever. Love it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers FPPete.
Great looking bike.
Thanks Dan, The DR650 is a good looker for sure. Regards FPPete.
Have a 04 drz400s but want a dr650 soooo bad !! 🤞🏼
The DRZ400 is a top bike, better than the DR650 offroad. The DR650 is a great all rounder. Thanks for watching the video.
Good stuff...thank you
Thanks for the feedback Ken. Regards Pete.
six speed would be good .....great review 👍👍👍
That would be the icing on the cake. Thanks Andy.
Have indicator for fuel?
No fuel gauge. I just reset the trip counter to zero when I fill up the tank. I get 400km from a full tank.
Good job
Thanks JG. Regards Pete.😄👍
Great bikes the dr650 shame we cant get them in the UK they are like rocking horse shit over here.
Thanks BG, Your definitely missing out on a great bike. Regards Pete.
Nice
Thanks Peter, Glad you enjoyed the video.
gezzz this is not a review / change your title to mods & description but not a review of the bike after 10000k at all!!!!
Thanks heaps for your feedback. The DR650 is a such great bike and a blank canvas that allows anyone to build a bike that really suits them.
