I love this man. One of the most grounded and humble musicians in the business. People occasionally take issue with some of the things he says, but that's what happens when you shoot straight -- your opinions will occasionally offend. The comment about people who listen to their own music being "creepy" is spot on. I knew a guy in a band who managed to cut an album years ago and he used to go around listening to the CD in his car all the time. He was creepy. So is Prince.
@@pointTv-fs1ow That´s why I do it, to make sounds and tracks I really like myself. If I don´t like listening to it or it sounds too much like something or somebody else I throw it away without hesitation.
@@InsideBilderberg of course you want to listen to your own works, otherwise you'll never learn to grow from them but patting yourself on the back and constantly going through an ego trip over your music is very pathetic, and that's the point he's trying to make here
The dissonant chords that Buzz plays help the following consonant chords to sound even more powerful, since, in nature, dissonance demands consonance. Adam Jones also uses the technique.
Yeah but I get what he's saying. Adam Jones is why I started playing guitar. It has a much bigger impact in the sphere of super hard rock. Especially with chords and not strings of notes.
i do the same thing with song writing. i started recording everything about 3 or 4 years ago. i have over 200 riffs recorded on 4 different cellphones ive went through over the years, and on my computer. i figure if i record everything that i like when i play it something good will come up eventually. don't only do serious songs. if i play a rif that sounds ridiculous and makes me laugh i record that too and work on it. who cares just have fun. i think thats what he's basically getting at
Same situation here, I have something like 60 complete songs and an avalanche of riffs for verses and choruses scattered between videos and tabs, the only important thing to do is to maintain a minimum of order.
This dude is so correct This why Kurt shit himself watching him play The guy doesn't care about the rules And what he says is the same as Paul McCartney It just happens there's no full proof method
Buzz's whole attitude really inspires me because all that matters to him is being you and making cool, fun, and weird ass riffs. A lot of people just try and overstuff music, but Buzz really has a great grasp on what sounds good. His whole bit about being having no mold or bounds making music and being a fan of your own songs is something everyone should take to heart while making music.
my problem is i make riffs that i love, try to find the next part to the song, end up making another riff i like that doesn't go with it, work on that one... the same things happens.. then i end up with 1000 parts that are awsome but dont go together and i just move on and loss track of them over time lol
I feel you I do the same thing. One thing I've been trying to do to fix that was taking the riff that I really like and then instead of trying to attach it to another awesome riff, just dial back a little bit and play something a little less busy or interesting to create some space. I feel like it highlights what makes the initial riff so cool when I make my way back to it. That way instead of feeling like every riff in the song has to be exciting it helps me view it as a piece of music instead of just a bunch of cool riffs stitched together. I'm still an amateur just wanted to share one thing I've been trying to do to keep myself from letting those ideas build up without developing them
I love how Buzz's number 1 goal is to be different. More bands should follow that mindset; maybe then the music industry wouldn't be so oversaturated with repetitive garbage.
Dude best definition ever!!! Done it like that, never got famous but fuck does it it work and boy is it true. Saw melvins thrice in Amsterdam and alway fab. You could check my band wondertrees but no need if no feel whaha. Big X Freek King B and Company
I'm gonna have to start playing more wrogn. Thanks Buzzo, I think you're on to something. I already have the real simple recording going on because I hate twiddling knobs at first too.
Great advice. Some time simple things are really the best but are overlooked cause they are obvious. I think Kurt Cobain said he would write songs by just sitting down in front of the TV and playing.Kind of creates a zen distraction to where you let creativity flow through you without interrupting it with thinking too much.
Hello! I would like to start playing guitar and im thinking to buy a great guitar not so expensive but something cool to do music. What would you recomend me? im into sounds like melvins, gorilla biscuit and black flag also i like other kind of music like Burzum
Whenever I'm feeling in a loop I strait up watch this video and then listen to the melvins because buzzo shows all the time that you can make something that sounds unique without it being so over complicated I feel a lot of times as modern guitar players we strive to make the craziest shit possible and that's not always fun the base of good music is fun because if you are having fun then you play it with passion and people gravitate towards that
I never realized he had the same approach to guitar as I do. I'm definitely getting that egc guitar I have the hands of a five year old like king buzzo.
The King ! I have seen "the melvins" in various shapes and forms 5 times and each time I'm blown away by the professionalism, intensity, and constant progression. I've listened and loved them from the 80's till now. Long live the King ! and that drummer guy Dale :) He's pretty fucking good too . I scored a drumstick last show .wOOT
If you liked those just keep on checking out other albums. They've made a shitton. Start with the early stuff and work your way to present. There's ALOT to listen to. My favorites are Freak Puke, Gluey Porch Treatments, and Lustmord among others.
this guy is the real deal , i hate people that tell you who it supose to make music and play a instrument i really hate that like buzz said we had a lot of band doing that , we don't need more of that
Read the lyrics to any of the songs on 'Ozma'. They're all like that. I think they use words (sometimes, made-up words) because they just like the way that they sound in the song, even if they have no real meaning. Melvins & I have a few mutual friends & one of them once told me that their lyrics are heavily influenced by 'Jabberwocky': www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/42916/jabberwocky
Buzzo you should listen to the Melvins some time. I think you would really like them.

I've played guitar for over thirty years. This is some of the best advice I've ever heard.
"You can't write songs without wading through a lot of garbage". Preach.
That’s so motivational

John Powell but isnt the point of creating music so that what you create is something you like and want to listen too?

so full of yourself you cant even listen to some tracks you made?
You don't have to be anti-technical or anti-shredding to dig his rap.
Music is a whole buffet. Take what you like. Leave the rest.
This advice also translates to non-guitar music as well.
Play, just play; there are enough bands playing correctly. This is why you are the King!!! Thank you Buzzo!!!
the riff he plays sounds very similar to the end of closer by NIN
lol i knew it sounded familiar
Thank you, I knew it reminded me of something!!
Silence Kid by Pavement, 20 second mark
The dissonant chords that Buzz plays help the following consonant chords to sound even more powerful, since, in nature, dissonance demands consonance. Adam Jones also uses the technique.
Hell, pretty much every great guitarist going back to Hendrix uses dissonance followed by consonance.
Yeah but I get what he's saying. Adam Jones is why I started playing guitar. It has a much bigger impact in the sphere of super hard rock. Especially with chords and not strings of notes.
This riff reminds me of the piano ending from Closer by NIN
Rafael Schmitz wow, that’s actually pretty spot on.
As a massive NIN fan, not sure how I didn’t catch that one!
just like quiet versus the loud. yin and the yang. u gotta have darkness to distinguish light
"there's enough bands out there playing correctly"
Buzz is the best. Sharing a bit of his wisdom with the viewer is priceless.

To quote Miles Davis, "There are no wrong notes"
Yes there are.. I do bum notes all the time.. :)
Unless you're Miles' sideman

Still on a journey with King since since seeing him October 1993. What a well spoken gentleman.

He should be allowed to live forever.
