- Leather free “vegan interiors” have become commonplace among many EV’s and gasoline vehicles . These interiors can often be optioned in stark white/light colors, and begs the question, how do they hold up to daily use? It’s no secret proper maintenance of these materials is important, but how do they fare if you let them get extremely dirty? Let’s compare Tesla vegan leather vs Rivian vegan leather!

Great video! That Rivian interior is really impressive - I would totally go for that on my next one, just wish they would include a black headliner
who the hell buys an R1T with a white interior for a farm truck. I salute you
I’ve been looking for a video like this! 10/10
Really appreciate the thorough videos Out of Spec does, and, well.... you've convinced me to subscribe Coleton! Well done.
Nice job as always! Appreciate your expertise.
That was a great video - well done! would like to see more content on the Vegan material over time. Thanks - look forward to more videos.
Thanks Coleton. Very helpful.
Damn you, making me feel the need to clean my Ocean Interior now!
I've got the ocean coast interior on my R1T and love it. Aside from some blue jean transfer its holding up very well.
I wonder why the farm truck guy got a white interior like that
Still great idea for a video really exact it!
Glad to see this video! Are there any important things to note about the ventilation holes in these light colors? Would spills/dirt be more noticeable or harder to clean?
It would be cool if you could do a video on cleaning the Volvo animal-free interior like the one found in the C40. It's more of a suede texture, so I'd be interested to know what would be the best way to go about cleaning it.
Have you tried this on blue jean transfer? That seems to be the definitive test for vegan leather.
Nice work, Colton, but surprised you add so much solution at the start of cleaning a perforated material. I’d be worried the grime would get into the substrate.
Coleton, Would you put the Gyeon Leather Shield on the Tesla’s vinyl seat? I’ve used it on leather seats in the past and it worked great.
Interior of the Rivian looks so much better than any Tesla.. The minimalist design is not my favorite at all. Tesla just looks more luxurious on the Exterior to me, less so on the interior.
Great info @OutofSpecDetailing ! What do you suggest for a Model Y white interior to remove denim dye transfer ? We don't have that yet as the car is a week old, but i worry about it. We do have a line on the driver seat that almost looks like pencil, but it isn't coming off with baby wipes. The curve of it suggests something on someone's leg drew a line in the path of the leg getting into our out of the seat.
Any stronger cleaner you use on your white interior Tesla's with stubborn marks?
Colten, do you have a link to the brushes you’re using to clean the seats?
Great video. Can you weigh in on Alcantara and how it compares for wear and cleaning? Fisker is offering a couple of Alcantara interiors (including a white/gray).
Alcantera is a nightmare to maintain!
I have a model 3 with white vegan leather, it's coming up on 4 years old and has 30k miles. Starting to see some cracking in the bolster side of the drivers seat, as well as some color transfer from my clothes that is really stubborn. Any tips on cleaning them beyond what you showed here?
I cannot get the dye transfer out of my white x plaid seats
Colton! You know auto detailing like no one else, but I grew up in the fine leather goods business. “Vegan” leather is vinyl! Call it what it is, it’s plastic. Although there are different qualities of vinyl, nothing beats a leather interior. If properly cared for, a leather interior will outlive the car. Leather is skin and skin needs to have the fats and oils restored to if every few months and it’s way more durable then any vinyl interior. We won’t even go into the smell and the sound a leather interior has. Car companies have been looking to reduce cost and have been passing this vinyl off as better then leather. I want to see it in 15 years of blistering sun and below freezing cold. The vinyl wrapped steering yokes in the Teslas are already peeling like a cheap Walmart vinyl sofa. We don’t kill cows for leather, we kill them for food. Leather is a byproduct
That could be a decent argument against it but unfortunately the quality of leather in cars today isn’t what it used to be. Maybe on few premium brands but not in general
2:02 I like the word vegan as that is Syth lather's target market people who don't eat meat and don't mind leather a by product of beef going to waste... They also don't mind the evomental impacts of Syth leather or the waste of cow life it is if you don't use all of it.
Vegan leather: decent material, but just a fancy name for plastic that can be marketed at a premium price.
Exactly!
It's the base material in the cheapest model 3. I've always felt it's somewhere between cloth and real leather in terms of premium-ness, but I'll take it over cloth any day!
I had a '98 E36 M3 with a Dove Grey leather interior. It definitely got pretty nasty, including blue transferring from my jeans. But, I had great luck with Leatherique back in the day. The key was to let the enzymes sit for quite a while. Of course the leather still has creasing and stuff that happens with any leather as it gets used, but it got rid of all the discoloration.
The vinyls of today feel SO much nicer than the vinyl materials from when I was a kid in the 80s. I hope they wear better over the long term. My childhood was full of vinyl seats from the 70s that had split and that was always like the end of the road. I love the white vinyl seats in our iD4. :D
The whole “vegan leather” name is complete BS. Just call it what it is, vinyl or dress it up by calling it leatherette, or some other fancy name like T-Tex or whatever. Vegan leather sounds stupid and pandering, IMO.
Having lived with two Model 3’s with white interiors, they clean well. But they do get some “crease marks” on the bolsters. Not the same as leather, but you can see them. They are more marks than actual creases. I had two Model 3’s and the one with the most miles got to 46k miles.
vegan leather....a.k.a. Vinyl.....and far from premium. Nice cleanup job though and good display of product effectiveness
I wonder what a real cowboy thinks about this truck
What as opposed to all the bros that drive their low profile dozers, and grandmas driving the the market? Lol, come on man.
Why would anybody get a white interior is a mystery to me 🤷🏻♂️
Vegan leather = plastic
