The words to this song make me cry every time. Any time I see a beat up cat, afraid of humans, weary, I think of the words to this song and imagine how different that cat's life could be if someone would just "touch her". Excellent performance by Jennifer.
I think about this song every time I see an older cat dumped at a kill shelter or worse yet, just left at the last residence when someone moves away. a cat that has NEVER been touched is far less sad than one who KNEW what it was like to be loved until they got too old, not cute, sick and needy. THAT'S what this song makes me think of.
The only thing I remember about this scene when I saw it in theatres was I was so excited to hear this song from Jennifer. But at the crescendo her voice was overshadowed by the orchestra. It was the part that she was going to really belt it out ‘TOUCH ME’ and the freakin’ trumpets / drums/ violin or whatever decided to BLLAAAAMM 🎺 🎺 🎻 🥁 🎻 at the same time
From Elaine Paige to Sara Brighton and Jennifer Hudson they have all brought to light the heart and soul of this amazing character. Each was amazing and exactly as they should be. I myself humbly say thank you to all of them for this song that has held my heart since I was 15 years old.
out whole movie these are the only words i can remember. Jennifer hudson blew it out of the water with this song, and the emotion she brought. Splendid ^_^ truely it was amazing!
While i adore Jennifer Hudson, i think she sang it a bit too rough for want of a better expression, through the song. Take a look at the version with Elaine Paige. Just the look in her eyes brought me to tears. Jennifer Hudson is one of my favorite artists ever but I liked the Elaine Paige version WAY better.
Honestly, Jennifer Hudson and Jason Derulo were great - their vocals are to notch. Had they actually embraced the spiri of the original (no CGI, make it a stage-esque show, NO Corden or Rebel) this could've been better.
RIGHT? IT LEGIT BREAKS THE WHOLE POINT. also where tf is Jemima? Like I get Victoria is the one to touch her AFTER GRISABELLA IS DONE SINGING, but Jemima is super important. She helps Grisabella get back into the Jellical cats and sings the part of memory that encourages Grisabella is belt out singing “touch me, it’s so easy to leave me”. Like bro did director never watch CATs 😭
I own Cats the Broadway show on VHS and used to watch it obsessively when I was a child ❤ Memory was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE part of the play. The song would make me cry😢
The whole point of memory is that grizabella wants to be touched and accepted back into the jellicles; yet victoria literally touches her multiple times
Idk but I had a good time during that holiday season while watching this movie. It wasn't perfect but it brought me holiday joy and sadness. I'll always remember December 2019, right before the pandemic changed everything.
Thank you so much.
Cats was not a fantastic movie. However, I think Jennifer Hudson killed it with this rendition of Memory. I wasn't familiar with the film or the broadway show when I watched this version of Cats, so when she sang, "Touch me, it's so easy to leave me," it brought tears to my eyes. I just wasn't expecting it, something so raw and vulnerable. You could truly feel her giving it her all. Now that I hear the original, it’s great, but it’s more manicured and organized than the way Jennifer Hudson sang it. Genuinely, I like this rendition better.
Everyone hating on this couldn't hold a CANDLE to Jennifer. She's one of the greatest vocalists of our time and did a phenomenal job woth this. Most people on here just need to say out loud what they really feel...you hate that a black woman is singing it... just say it and live your truth out in the open.
Since they already changed up the story from the original anyway, I would have thought this part more endearing if Victoria had gotten in front of Grizabella and hissed at all the cats hissing at her warning them to back off.
I can see where you are coming from. I think the reason that they didn't is because Victoria is meant to represent innocence and purity, and aggression, even when used to defend, may break this narrative.
THIS is how this song was to be interpreted and emoted. Not the yelling/showy stereotypical “Broadway” voices of the ‘80’s (minus Buckley). It’s perfect with the one “belt” that Jennifer does here. Perfect.
The way most of the comments are saying Jennifer made this song bad, the movie was bad, can people just focus on what the movie represented?! Like this movie showed the the true emotion of someone wanting another chance to try again at life and make better choices, to be someone new?! Who cares who did it better, think about what this represented instead.
Pour moi Memory de Cats deux personnes l'ont admirablement chanté, d'abord Elaine Page, la Grizabella d'origine... et Barbra streisand, pour moi ce sont les deux seules qui tiennent cette chanson magnifique !!!
I have to say, I LOVE Jhud, she’s hands down one of the best vocalists of my generation. That being said, growing up obsessing over the broadway performance I would watch on VHS over and over and over again, I absolutely HATE everything about this movie. I hate the creepy humanoid CGI cat people. I hate the vocals of the girl singing with her. I hate 95% of her performance of this song. I don’t ever want to see/hear this again.
This is a qualitatively new interpretation: some new perspective is definitely added to the initial message! A unique and stunning musical intonation! BravA!
This could’ve been a fascinating and artistically beautiful movie, if they had leaned more into the original Broadway campiness. Big costumes, insane nonlinear storytelling, great choreography, actual synchronization between performers and orchestra, the stuff that made the original good.
It feels more in line with Betty Buckley's version, I just wished we could have heard her belt it out more like that version because she has that power house voice.
"I was beautiful then." ? She looks just fine in this version, in the stage play her coat, her makeup her hair, all gave the impression of a cat who was barely hanging on to life, either due to surviving an accident or whatever. Here, the lyrics just don't work.
Unpopular opinion, but I didn’t feel the Elaine Paige version at all. She can sing for sure, but it felt routine. This version sounds desperate, terrifying, lonely, melancholic.. Especially how she almost cries while singing it. This is my favorite version of the character.
ok. but when rebel wilson delivered a square 1, and steven mcrea a 10 in skimbleshanks, then jennifer hudson did a solid 8.5 to me. it's a movie-version, it's okay that she's not doing perfect, but rather a little rough, and emotional(ly unstable), it's just the style the movie was going for, and that's... you know, not great, but OKAY. so, to me jennifer hudson did a good job here, and i like her version. it's good enough to distract me from the overall design (but not good enough to distract from the lacking plot here, because they butchered the story a little, especially concerning her)
She hits some of the lines really well and I would say even better than the original BUT most of that felt like she was over acting her over acting. I know she was trying to put her own spin on it but it hurt it a lot.
The words to this song make me cry every time. Any time I see a beat up cat, afraid of humans, weary, I think of the words to this song and imagine how different that cat's life could be if someone would just "touch her". Excellent performance by Jennifer.

I feel the same for weary humans
This is the only thing you'd ever remember from this film.
you will remember everything from this movie. in your nightmares!
This is the only thing everyone remembers from this movie
I cry a river 😢
There were so many cringey parts, so I remember most of it, unfortunately.

Indeed?
Betty Buckley set the bar high to start with.
Elaine Paige - The best performance. As well as 1998 it is the best in terms of singers and way of singing.
@@scotthix2297Totally agree SHE SANG IT THE BEAT OF ANYBODY!
It's BRIGHTMAN.....SARAH BRIGHTMAN 😂

She did fantastic! To think this wasn’t cast as good as they cast on broadway is puzzling though.

Despite the fact that this movie was like a bad acid trip this performance was amazing and blew me away. BRAVO JENNIFER.
Honestly, Jennifer Hudson and Jason Derulo were great - their vocals are to notch.

She literally sings: ,, TOUCH ME, it's so easy to leave me..." After she got touched 🤣🤣🤣
She wanted acceptance. The others to touch and accept her the way Victoria did
@@rs9111 ok so you really didn't watch cats the musical, did you?

@@FuzaketeSatsugaiTHIS. The movie did damage to the story 100%. Jemima is crucial
I love the movie, cats and Jennifer Hudson. I love you when you sing that song I cried like a little baby you are beautiful and talented.

shhhhh. you're not supposed to notice that.
Victoria wasn't a jellicle at that point. She was welcomed into them at the end after Grizabella had moved on to be reborn again
its because Tom Hooper doesn't know how to direct something SO simple. lol
My heart broke for this cat💔😭. Jennifer Hudson you're so great!👏👏👏👏👏

I love how Grizabella is a destitute alley cat, but still has the opportunity to get a perfect gel manicure.
Jennifer Hudson...WOW!!! 🫶🏽❤
I Love the cat move i Love the songs they sing.
5:59 not sure why this cracked me up LOL LOL But have to say JHudson's singing is so awesome!
I think she totally over sang it.

wow!!! What a performance....Ms. Hudson you are really a shining star.......Greetings from Brazil...Love you!!!
The end bit was beautiful, the bit where victoria join in and sings was the moment she realised that she couldnt sing so she just stopped
Touch me…che potenza! Fantastico, veramente molto brava.
simply beautiful, amazing, grand performance. Thank you!!
its the greatest Jen Hudson work ever.
It seems she is dressed and looks like Aretha, obviously preparing for a biopic :)
Jennifer Hudson does a great job .. with a great voice and interpretation. Beautifully done!

Legit made me shed tears
Director: Quién puede poner sentimiento en ésta canción?
Jennifer Hudson: Sostén mi Óscar un momento.
I liked this 2019 version of Cats better then the old one. Also the costumes are way better.

I'll bet if both Jemima and Syllabub were in Cats the Musical on Broadway, they'd be best friends with each other and Victoria.

I get it, she was going for a different interpretation, but this does not hold a candle to Elaine Paige's classic version.
No kidding. She kind of screams it.

Barbara Streisand, did a good Job, But Elaine Paige, "Owned" it. Jennifer Hudson is Not an Opera Singer.
