This man single-handedly manages to be one of the gentlest, most kindhearted artists to ever grace the face of RUclips. The way he manages to talk about the vulnerabilities and struggles of being an artist in such an uplifting and positive way is truly inspiring. Thank you Scott for touching and inspiring all us junior artists❤
YES! THANK YOU! IM SO GLAD U SAID IT!
He has the spirit of Bob Ross; encouraging everyone to try art. I love it.
You're too kind. Thank you! ♥
@@ssavaart Of course!
He is probably the gentlest, most kindhearted artist ever! 🎨 💘
The way he just ripped the perfectly fine drawing just tore my heart in a thousand peices
He did it to flex. Guaranteed that’s a copy and he wanted you to think that’s one of his “bad” drawings so he can make everyone think he’s some god standard. People in every hobby and profession do this shit while acting like they’re giving helpful advice when they’re just being obnoxiously pretentious. It’s cringe af.
@@Nick-vw1lm honestly that makes sense

That’s what I came here to say too!! I would’ve purchased that one!
My ugly phase is after i did the drawing, while i am drawing i'm thinking "man it looks good, i'm getting better at this" but like one day after i did the drawing is just "bro this looks like shit wtf"
I think that's interesting cus some people say the opposite
They get too absorbed into their art that they cant see the bigger picture and always dilly dally on the mistaked they clearly see but after a while of taking a break, perhaps having a snack, they'll notice "hey that aint too bad"
@@neeevirus It is a combination of both sometimes for me. As in sometimes I don't notice the mistakes and sometimes I just *hate* what I am creating (not an artist but sometimes do art for fun).
Either way break from the piece is needed.
@@1greninjawolfbossdeath648 very true, taking a break refreshes the mind and it makes you more efficient when you come back to draw. Even just 15 to 30 mins is good
Same dude my art becomes ugly but first step is beautiful
Same bro. I did Neo from Matrix and it looked really good, then I was drawing Black Bolt from Multiverse of Madness and it looked really bad. I didn’t like it at all, where I just decided to throw it away.
The way he tore it had me clenching my jaw. BRO, IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!
I am so hurt because of it
Yeah, like i was salty about it.
he doesnt think it was. everything you see him doing you will think is good, but hes the artist, the creator of it, and he just knows he could have done better.
@ as an artist as well, I understand that every artist and viewer thinks differently. I just personally thought (and still think) the piece could have remained intact. I understand if he felt like he would have been better off as an artist tearing it or even just thinking there was no point in keeping it.
@@RandoDoodlz i am the same as him i rather never look at pieces im not happy with again, meaning destroying them. i’m drawing mostly digitally so tapping delete on the screen is much less dramatic than ripping up paper, but the feeling you get looking at a piece you’re not happy with is much worse than deleting it
Him: *tears the paper apart*

My kid was having an epic meltdown over an Xmas project that wasn't going their way, and I got the brilliant idea to pull up this video. The "I believe in you" was so touching at the end.

when you have reached a certain level of proficiency, it isn't much of a deal to tear up what would otherwise be beautiful, part of art is that it has to resonate with the soul, so even if it might be good, if it's not good to YOU, then fuck it

Honestly I used to have that 'ugly phase' a lot and used to just erase whatever I drew because I had this image in my head and it never looked quite right but now I practically don't use an eraser for the early stages and keep repeating to myself "trust the process"

Your relationship with skin color and undertones is sooo satisfying and inspiring to me. You broaden the spectrum far beyond I saw before watching you. I see you put down these bright bright colors as a base and I’m obsessed
Right? You think "how can the garish red possibly be a tonal base" and then bam it makes the perfect warm spots for the old man's face. When it works it works
i'm Sorry but,🍅
Is it just me, or do Scott and Stanley Tucci look like they could be twins
It not just you, I thought he was doing a self-portrait at first then I realized it was Stanley tucci.
came to the comments to discern if self-portrait or Tucci
Stanley Tucci is like Dark Scott lol he doesn't look as kind as Scott does, although I don't actually know much about his personality
I thought it was Stanley and then when it was done I thought it was a self portrait!
I’ve been saying this for a while but this portrait really confirmed it for me 😂
This is what I've been wanting in art content. I don't just want to see a lovely piece come together, I also appreciate what the actual artist is thinking and feeling while they create their art. What a fantastic painting!
I love this message because the “ugly phase” of my art honestly terrifies me. I just realized that I’ve accidentally created a coloring book for myself because I have so many sketches in my watercolor sketchbook waiting to be painted. Every time I finished drawing and inking a page, I stopped there because I was afraid of ruining it with color. One of these days I’m going to bite the bullet and finish them. 😊
Me too! Whenever I would start a drawing that looks pretty good, I would get so scared of painting it that I would start on another drawing to practice on it and then I would spend so much of my time trying to perfect it even tho it's just for practice 😭 I hope you do manage to finish your drawings though. One of my favorite advice from Scott is that when you mess up on a painting, you could always just redraw it
I think it was another one of my other favorite modern artists, Christopher Lovell, that said something along the lines of “You cannot take your art so seriously that you can’t start over” meaning, don’t be afraid of taking those chances! Every artist who is serious about their craft has had to make those leaps, and sometimes, despite all your best efforts, it doesn’t work out. But that doesn’t mean it’s a failure! Simply a lesson and an opportunity to try again. You got this!
❤
Yes!!! I can’t even get myself to ink them anymore though!
I always take a photo of my sketch before I colour, so if it does go wrong, at least i have the photo!
sameee
My art professor always told us, "You will hate your art up until you're 95% done with it." A lot of it is because of our brain's tendency to not see point in something that looks like it's going nowhere. You just gotta fight to urge and see things through to the end

You have a good proffesor
Sometimes not true, I just ruined a drawing by painting it.
@@simplypieWell then why not just accept it as is or repaint over it and try again. Art is a work in progess, dont give up just cuz not everything is perfectly straight lined or colored or whatnot and its perfectly ok to leave a drawing uncolored and just leave it as a sketch. I've realized, the ugly you see in your art isn't ugly for everyone. I never destroy my art and with time I actually enjoy it and sometimes more than my favorite pieces at the time.
I've started taking photos of my art while I feel like it's in the ugly phase. That way I can compare it side-by-side with a photo of the finished product as a reminder to trust the process.

If you judge a person based off of the ugly stages of their life alone, you'll never really see the beauty that they hold. Have patience, and give your art the benefit of the doubt. That is the only way that beauty will come.

Its been five years that I have not drawn anything. Every time I want to do something, my ideas that I have before just escapes me and I'm left being empty. People called me creative because I can have so many ideas in the span of a few minutes. I don't know if it something to do with my mother's death or I just lost the passion of drawing but watching your videos comforts me.
Im sorry for your loss I know how it feels my closest aunt who was basically my second mother died and left me and my family, including her, at the time, 11 yo kid alone and she was my closest cousin, her moms death had changed her a lot since before and she wasnt as verbal as she usually was anymore. Im very sorry for your loss again
I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you can find a way to get drawing again. I am much like you. I’m a perfectionist and procrastinator. when ideas pop into my head i write them down in that instant or put them in your notes in you phone. This way you can save your ideas but there’s no pressure to complete them instantly. As for actually drawing it can be hard. Especially if you’re feeling disconnected. Remember why you love art and forget all the other pressures. Just draw. I’m going to link a playlist of timed drawing exercises in a second comment. Just get your hands moving❤️ I hope you can get over this hard period.
I’m sorry for your loss, I couldn’t begin to understand the pain.
I just hope that you will be able to do what you love again and regain your passion

this made my day , because I’m still trying to find my art style.. it’s not working.. I look at videos of peoples art and it makes me feel down graded because of how beautiful their art is, but I’m young.. and I need to realize that being unique .. is the best thing.
It comes naturally, my dude. Don't worry about your art style. It's something I used to stress over as well before realizing how insignificant it is- because art styles are overrated. I draw art in countless different styles, so I never say I have a specific one. You'll find your core skill in style eventually, but for now, just make the art. It's easier said than done, but don't worry about being unique, and let your hand and imagination just guide the creation of whatever you want to draw. And NEVER compare yourself to others because remember; everyone was once a beginner, and everyone made...not the best art at some point. Practice, practice, practice. We all learn at different paces, and the beauty of art is that it accepts everyone in any style at any pace.
Love your photo
@@blackwillow482 extremely solid advice
I've heard people argue that the whole "style" thing can even be hindering- so why not just keep practicing & do hat you enjoy? I know someone who's like a style chameleon, they're just amazing at so many different styles & I really don't see a problem with them "not having a style"- I still see that the piece is made by them, they're enjoying drawing & keep improving 💕
Will you do a tutorial about how you break down colors in your reference image? The colors are always exaggerated so well in your finished pieces but I find myself not knowing how to pull this off. Love this painting, by the way.
I speak about it in my lives when painting. I'll see if I can do a short on it.
In two words, i believe its values and colour temperature. Shadowed areas are cooler toned (e.g. cooler red compared to warm) and mostly you just have to get the values right and it will look realistic and three-dimensional despite the colour. Maybe you could also edit the saturation or hue of your reference pictures on some photo editing app/software? I think I've heard the James Gurney book 'Color and Light' goes really in depth on this theory if you really wanted to take it further.
@@qwr742 I understand color theory, but I struggle to break out of realism. I don’t want to replicate the reference exactly

I was feeling down, and this honestly gave me faith again. You've earned a sub
This happened to me today when I was doing a dress design and I was SOOO happy with the sketch, but I hated it when i added watercolor. However, I kept going and it turned out to be one of my best pieces! SO happy I didn't give up.
OK this is what I needed rn. Recently I've been struggling to find a 'good' reference but the same process happens every time, I start drawing over a background and then I remove the sketches because I don't see anything in the piece. By the time I've found a reference I really want to do and I put in the time to finish it, I notice myself sort of finding myself in the drawing and making it up to me standards. Sometimes I still might not be happy with it until I take a step back and realise that it wasn't a waste of time and I've just shocked myself. Don't doubt yourself, there's always hope.
This is honestly so true...I just went through the ugly phase yesterday with my art piece that I'd to erase it all together and draw again....I was on the verge of quitting knowing that I can't draw(since I was drawing after a little long time)...but then I saw one of Scott's video which mentioned the corner of shame..honestly it lightened me up little and sat again to draw...it came out better than before then
That was amazing. What a transformation. And very motivational. Thank you, man
I think I just realized why I find your art so intriguing, you exaggerate the color, almost like you’re turning the saturation higher. When I first saw it, I thought the colors were odd, but now that I’ve realized what you’re doing, I think it’s really really cool!!
its sorta pop art style which is maybe a bit easier than hyper realism so i tried it too, i like it.

I always thought of myself as weird because I’m always happy with the way my art looks when it is halfway done, but as soon as I finish it, I regret a lot and I’m never happy with the final product. 🤔 wish I knew why lol
As Dutch Van der Lin would have phrased it: "HAVE SOME GODAMN FAITH!!!"
As a wise man once said: “DAMMIT DUTCH I’M TRYING!!!!”
This genuinely has opened my eyes. I usually give up on a traditional drawing when I mess up just ONE thing in the process, this gives me hope. Thank you.
God this is so true. I would try to color when I finished my drawings and it looks terrible. I just can’t seem to stand coloring while thinking: “this could ruin my drawing”. So now I just sketch it and that’s it.
But I am starting to color a bit more now, so I’m going to try to practice it more in the future
we should normalize liking our art despite its flaws
Exactly art isnt ment to be perfect and everybody has an idea of what perfect is to them. Everyone also has their own unique art style and it works for them and in fact i find that the flaws are what maked the art more perfect because the imperfections show the realisim and human part of ourselves. Art is whatever you want it to be unlike how they teach you in school. In school in art class they'll teach you that proportions are right and perfect straight lines are the correct way of doing art but thats where they're wrong because there is no right way to do art and lines dont always have to be straight they can be squiggly and a mess and thats what makes them more beautiful to me yk what i mean?

Hey Scott, how do you get around the blotches in your watercolor paintings?
That's what I want to know!
I THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST ME 😭😭
Thanks to my mom for teaching me at a young age that art is fun and the mistakes don't matter because they'll slowly become less and less with time. Even pros make little mistakes but they can turn them into little blessings that end up making the overall piece more human. Now my favorite part is the ugly phase because you can see it morph into something beautiful in real time.
Keep drawing artists, humans have no peak. I can't wait to meet all of you amazing godlike beings at the top.
As an artist it's soo true the Mid phase sucks! Feels like should I tear it now! Like I wanna stop doing it anymore!!!
But then it somehow turns out to be nicer than you thought
Now that’s phenomenal!
The ugly phase is a little less anxiety inducing with digital art, cuz you can just untoggle and retoggle layers whenever, but the addition of layers and clipping layers adding new shortcuts to the artistic process makes some WIPs look GOOFY as all hell. It's pretty funny
I think the ugly phase is hated too hard, it carries our artwork and is the backbone for our paintings 😤
