Phil's AMA on Two Plus Two changed the way I looked at poker and myself as a poker player, SO enjoying that he's taken to teaching "full time". He's the best at explaining the nuts and bolts strategy in an easily digestible way, but he's the ONLY one who touches on the meta beyond the math and cards themselves, another brilliant bit of insights from Phil. Thank you!
Such good advice. I swear, every time I'm having some kind of existential crisis as an online poker player I watch one of your videos like this and just have some truth hammered home. It's uncanny. Though maybe not really, as you've experienced so much more than me as a nearly two decade pro LOL. At any rate, just wanted to say this video hit home hard for me. I'm in the midst of a big downswing, a combination of variance and bad decisions. But I've learned from your content and elsewhere to have a bankroll to withstand such downswings. And having these kinds of lessons reiterated has been super helpful to me, and it's continued to help me grow my bankroll and keep moving up in stakes in spite of all the adversity. Keep doling out these helpful videos, micro/low stakes grinders like me are gaining a lot from your wisdom!
Thank you so much! This is exactly why I make videos like this one even though they’re not as popular. I’m glad it connected with you and I really appreciate you letting me know.
I have so much difficulties to find a good coach I actually love hearing while i'm playing. I tried so hard to lisen to J little but can't lisen to his fast paste and cutting words. I'm so happy I discoverd your channel. Learning alot and keep up the amazing work!
Phil, 1. (Needless to say) your this and other segments overall are very helpful and informative; (a) the reframing of power/edge attributes and how they dynamically change over time or during intra-session (b) default and trigger rules are excellent and timely for me and others. (2) Timely example : yesterday I lost my stack due to me ignoring those default and trigger rules and ignoring my decreased ratings of those “attributes elements “ So I got involved in a hand where I made a series of fundamental and thus cascading bunch of mistakes even though I had fair enough of an ace/q offsuit hand : (a) played out of position (b) did not challenge the opponent Preflop even though I knew he had less than a marginal hand (c) was impatient and tired and ignoring I was slightly fatigued combined with being card dead the last few hours (d) ignoring a basic rule to then stack off only with top pair and top kicker on a dangerous board on the flop when I was more than 150 blinds deep (I shoved). Opponent flopped two pair 9/7 suited. [3] hours earlier while I was bright, focused and fresh, I stacked 2 people due to me being in position- opponent 1 flopped 7/5 flush, opponent 2 flopped two pair (and he ignored the monotone flush flop) while I called in position with the flopped nut flush (fresh , focused and with my computer gaming reframing attributes at about 9/10 level)
To a large extent this meshes with one of the key qualities that most if not all winning players possess, and that is being introspective. This video is great because it basically points out how to be productively introspective.
Love the gems you’re dropping but having the self discipline to execute on these tips are so crucial. Especially in PLO, I personally notice when holding myself accountable & being disciplined, the only person who can beat me is myself! Definitely need to set more default rules. Thank you for sharing this Professor G
Phil is the best go to source of guidance when it comes to Poker but one of the things I attribute to my poker success is definitely taking breaks, avoiding playing when tired, mentally fatigued or with alcohol, they will give you a big edge long term!
The "poker player as a game character" is a great way to conceptualize the dynamic state of anyone's game. From now on I'm a Red Wizard, practicing white magic (sound theory-based play), black magic (exploits), and combat (live reads). Player stats, XP, buffs ... all fit right in with managing my game in the moment. Fortunately, live tournaments somewhat level the effects of mental/physical exhaustion and length of session related impacts on everyone's quality of play, although some players will suffer more decline than others. The downside is that they do not do facilitate impromptu breaks, so learning to play through without punting once a trigger has been identified is a key skill.
I started to improve a great deal in poker when I went on the days where I could "take it or leave it." I was much more relaxed. Wanting to go play...and really can't waiting to go play...is really a negative for me. I'm to impatient on these days. Same with drinking an energy drink. Another no for me. I don't want to be in the mindset where I am "ready to play (gamble)" because I end up trying to make things happen more than I should versus just being okay with whatever the day brings. The best time for me to play poker is when Im really bored and just happy to be out of the house...and I'm okay if the game or my cards ends up coming my way slowly. I'm not a great poker player...but I have turned into a winning poker player. And I have no intentions of quitting my real job.
Great stuff, Phil! As always. Thank you. When I translate your videos into text articles for other people, your advice is still very useful and valuable in that form.
Great advice. I find that i usually make money early on, lose focus and end up losing money by the end of the session. Im gonna start focusing on recognizing when this happens and how to avoid it
This is so very well said and thoughtful insight of things I have been going thru and tried to kinda break down and see what type of energy I even have at tables. I have been playing for a living over a decade off and on and what he is saying is so on point it’s like a A.I breaking down a problem that human kind can’t amazing true respect!
This might seem unusual but I am learning graphic design at the moment and found your rules to be universal over different facets of life. I've tilted on design projects, creativity dropped by the 10th hour, I feel implementing your rules for this will help me tremendously. Thank you very much for all your work for all your content.
Good video Phil I try to do a self assessment of myself every half hour or so at the table and I have been a victim of addressing the symptom and not the actual fact that I’m tilted or tired etc I like that thought about potentially sacrificing 2 “bad” quits for 4 good ones
This guy is so much more likable and more sincere than Doug Polk. Polk has a nasty streak where he can be quite vindictive and malicious. But Galfond is just a genuinely nice guy.
Love your content and love this specific video. I agree with everything. One sitenot: some people (myself included) are very good in stopplaying when the first sign of tilt, bad run happens. Its also important to work on those mental issues so you can play longer without having to stop after every bad beat.
Too bad these rules kinda doesnt apply to tournaments bcs you can't quit until you out or make a break.U have to deal with your emotions and anxieties till the end of session

Phil, multiply your numbers my 5 for me lol. Personally around hour 12 is your 1 hour. I start to get really locked in and focused, seeing things I didn’t see 12 hour before. 24 hours in start to trail off, 30 hours+ rarely ends well
Thanks for the videos Phil. I’ve done a lot better since learning from your insight. Would definitely like to see some PLO advice! I have recently final tabled an online wsop event and I really want to win my first bracelet. If you would be interested in a chat sometime I would be grateful! Take care
Fear of losing is a trigger too? When I run too hot for a few days or a couple weeks, I get suspicious that a huge downswing is just awaiting on the corner, as a result I stop playing for a few days and when I play, I do it scared... it seems to happen 100% of the time after a big upswing, a downswing happens always!! So my brain has learned that I should be afraid of playing everytime I win a certain amount... it happened so often that I'm convinced that I should withdraw all my bank after an upswing take a long brake and return little by little to make sure I won't be in a downswing again... it's frustrating winning a lot just to lose all back right after that and having to start from 0 again... why I always have a huge upswing followed by a huge downswing? Why I can't have different kinds of runs? Why always the same pattern? I win non-stop for a while, then at some point I can't win 1 single hand, everything I do loses... nothing I do seems to work, and my opponents see this and understand they can play 100% of their hands against me cause they know I can't win at all... I lose with 99.5% equity 3 times in a session... and I always reach around the same amount (100-150buyins) and after that I can't go any further and then start lose non stop again... almost if it was programmed for that... like if there was a button to turn on a good run and a button to turn on a bad run... It's happening to me that way since 2023... and If I cashed out everytime I reach that X amount and restart little by little like i said, I'd have money to pay my bills for 1 year or/and climb the stakes... instead I still playing the same stakes as I'm always building 100 plus buy ins bankroll, just to lose it all and re-building again just to see the same thing happening again and again and again... I can't escape this cycle... I feel so stupid, cause If I'm seeing the same thing happening over and over again in the same way, why I couldn't come up with a plan to avoid this... I don't do anything about it... I just keep seeing the same shit happening to me and do nothing about it... If I withdrew my bankroll after an upswing every single time, I would have to restart from 0 or re-deposit a small amount just like I did when I went broke, but the difference is all that money I lost would be in my bank account at least... of course I wouldn't know this if this happened only once or twice... but that happened over 20 times in 1 year!!! How I can't learn it? I'm tired, if that happens again this time I swear I will quit before it's too late... I don't need to go through the entire downswing until the end just to know I'm in a downswing... I can see when it starts and quit early and not have to experience that in its full extent saving me time, money and energy... I'm done with this doomswitch... I won't allow that shit again... I know it's like a snowball there's no way it won't get bigger... I paid to see it the whole 2023 over 20 times and it happened exactly the same way... I'm 100% sure that's exactly what's going to happen again... cause it's been happening for over 1 year, so why I would be so stupid like I'm being to believe that things will be different this time, if that's never ever the case? After hitting around 100 buy ins upswing there will always be a downswing to make you give it all back... so if I know this for sure, when I reach that amount, I will quit for a while... like if I went broke, but the money will be saved and I can return from where I stop... it's fucking unbelievable... I wouldn't believe it if this didn't really happen... I don't know why I keep trying to play this game... it has no future... you can't keep going further, there's a gatekeeper that will send you back from where you started every time tou try to cross the limits...
Been playing 20 years hobby playing mostly bigger field tournamnets and it messes with my head cause you loose so much you loose 30 bink 1 after a longer break i play good, or what I call gladly take necessary risks especially if i run hot in the beginning then as time goes and bad bets comes i play more and more scared and i take a break and the pattern Repeats..
Phil, any words to a man that just seems to run bad over and over in this game? I try to enter every tournament with a positive mind set, live and online but when the same crap keeps showing up, either losing those flips being ahead or just seeing the same suck outs time and time again, it's to the point where I'm calling out what's gonna come. It's been like this all year, is it really possible to be this unlucky at something. I know we all have bad beat stories, these aren't really bad beat stories just a bad batch of being unlucky I guess time and time again, my girl says then quit playing but it's an addiction playing. It’s great stuff, however when you’re out playing for a night or even online and playing, it can be extremely hard to quit even when you notice these triggers, etc. Do you have any tips or ideas that can be implemented to make quitting easier? Btw I have read your ebook and it is great stuff as well. Thanks for all the great content.
I quite playing when I realize I have stopped paying enough attention to what is going on. If I start to forget to count the money in the pot or forget who raised what preflop...I call it a night. It has helped.

I quite playing when I realize I have stopped paying enough attention to what is going on. If I start to forget to count the money in the pot or forget who raised what preflop...I call it a night. It has helped.
