I was skeptical about the quality of the wide shots, but then I remembered that you were doing everything on iphones and not cinema cameras. Well done.
Hey Wren, for future projects, you can start/stop video recording with the volume buttons on an iPhone. This also works for taking photos too. So you don’t need to physically press the red record button on screen. I hope that helps!
Also, Apple Watch can remotely control the camera even to the point of framing the image as well. (Yes, 3 extra Apple watches adds cost. But when you’re using 3 iPhone pros anyway…)
Wren, it was brilliant to see your thought process as you explained your design of the rig for the phones. Very impressive and I find your "thinkmanship" inspiring. Thank you.

Just watched Studio Binder's take on 300 which focused on how these shots were achieved about 2 weeks ago on RUclips and just loved how they really went into it and all the technical stuff, I totally forgot this from when I first watched it on the special features on the DVD back when it was first released in 2006.

22:45 Next time use Filmic Pro, it will allow you to turn the in-built stabilization off. No need to hack the phone or potentially damage the magnet in the stabilizer.
From what I was able to discern, Filmic Pro doesn't actual disable the physical OPTICAL stabilizing hardware, just the software that's applied on top of it. There'd still be that jiggle
@@SirWrender But there would be a lot less jiggle right? Because from what I saw you were using the default camera app. Filmic also allows you to film at higher bitrates which does help you in post.
I love these engineering-meets-filmmaking videos. So creative, really pushes filmmaking and storytelling, and it's an incredible way to see how just getting out there and trying things is the only way to learn and improve!
Rokform, a California-based phone case company, makes sturdy, fairly slim cases with extra-strong magnets integrated into their cases. Those magnets would definitely be stronger than the stick-on rings you used and that *could* provide some additional stability if you wanted to stay with magnets for future versions of the mount you used.
NO WAYYYY. The final video turned out so cool! That pose at the end was the best too. Many channels I subscribe to after seeing one video, but this is worth it.
I'm pretty sure you could still access the cameras on the 13 by swiping to the right from the lock screen. I use my camera nearly every day for work so I pretty quickly worked out that little trick to open the camera and start snapping pictures. Otherwise this is great stuff!! Love seeing these little projects and how everything comes together.
I feel like instead of stacking the clips on top of eachother you could have lined them all up on the editing timeline, decide where you want to cut from one angle to another, and then create a zoom in/out transition to switch between clips. This would eliminate the misaligned edge you get from stacking the clips that were shot at slightly different positions on the rig.
at 0:38, he said "there are at least 1800 abs in this movie", if we then divide it by six (sixpack) we will get, you guessed it, 300. A coincidence, I think not
I always assumed that they shot in a ridiculous resolution in order to zoom between the shots, because the transitions looks so seamless when slowing the playback down.
Apple (or any phone company) needs to make this a real feature in the future, its a really great way of filming. Props to everyone involved it looked awesome.
I could literally watch you guys make a whole 15minute video talking about Zack snyders whole filmography. If you can get back to man of steel going forward
Not really though. The slow motion on the iPhone (and others) hasn't been improved since 2019. The colors and dynamic range is noticeably worse when filming in 240fps. Likewise, Samsung has done no improvements since introducing 960fps in 2018. There is also a lot of shutter blur and motion dithering in these shots, as well as a noticeably less detailed, aliased picture on the telephoto, in particular. I certainly wouldn't go to all this effort to record such a well set up scene with this rig. This is best case scenario, the Corridor Crew are excellent at shooting, they can make a 6 year old camera phone look decent.
All of you are not only incredibly talented, but You're ability to teach without it sounding like a lecture is more impressive than you guys might think.

When Wren mentioned he only knew one person to look cool with a Katana, I immediately knew he would bring out D.
And that made my day !
Absolutely brilliant, the pose after the cloud of blue dust was epic
Awesome prototype work and execution! I also appreciate the Highlander-like sword purchase from high school. =D
I had the same sword in high school
I was skeptical about the quality of the wide shots, but then I remembered that you were doing everything on iphones and not cinema cameras. Well done.
Zack Snyder and Larry Fong 🔥🔥🔥 Match made in heaven
This is why I love it when Wren does these sort of videos. I learn so much from these people.
Keep it up, don't ever stop! 😁
Big fan of Zack’s work. Bring him on the show when he’s available!
Oh yeah, the Zackster. Love Zacky. The Zackman i call him. You coming to his party wednesday? I'll text him you said hi.
Zack would geek out just as much as they would and I'm here for it.
Hey guys. This is an awesome idea. Just so you know. Filmic Pro now has a feature to completely disable stabilization. This is so cool. Well done
Hey Wren, for future projects, you can start/stop video recording with the volume buttons on an iPhone. This also works for taking photos too. So you don’t need to physically press the red record button on screen. I hope that helps!
noticed the same thing, I facepalmed when he went to design a whole new holder because of that issue
Or could have just used a Bluetooth remote trigger.
@@threepe0 he over did this project. There was soooo many better ways to approach this.
Also, Apple Watch can remotely control the camera even to the point of framing the image as well.
(Yes, 3 extra Apple watches adds cost. But when you’re using 3 iPhone pros anyway…)
Also on the lock screen you can swipe across the screen to open the camera. You don’t need to click the camera circle widget
You guys are bloody inspiring. You are creating creators and that is just brilliant.
Wren, it was brilliant to see your thought process as you explained your design of the rig for the phones. Very impressive and I find your "thinkmanship" inspiring. Thank you.
That ending with D was lowkey unintentionally perfect. With the smoke and reveal with the pose.
Wren, really liked you talking about what you learned. Totally reminded me of Mark Rober talking about iterating an idea. You guys should do a colab with him!
The final piñata scene was AWESOME
Here for the Snyder love!
Glad to see his work being highlighted
That moment when D was covered in purple smoke was one of the coolest things I've seen in a while and I just watched The Batman.
Just watched Studio Binder's take on 300 which focused on how these shots were achieved about 2 weeks ago on RUclips and just loved how they really went into it and all the technical stuff, I totally forgot this from when I first watched it on the special features on the DVD back when it was first released in 2006.
"this is actually my personal sword from high school"
Has a nerdier phrase ever been spoken?
Pro tip: it might be worth putting a web cam on your 3D printer so you can check it after hours, and I guess turn it off remotely or something.
Yeah, one of my old colleagues had OctoPrint set up with a web cam on a server he could log into for just this reason. Definitely saved him some headaches.
i dont think it happens very often, Wren just got unlucky
@@denzy3929 Failed prints happen often enough and catching it early can save a lot of expense and wasted time and effort. An R-Pi is $40.
Spaghetti detective is a god send if you are printing a lot on an unmonitored printer
@@chaos.corner fair enough
22:45 Next time use Filmic Pro, it will allow you to turn the in-built stabilization off. No need to hack the phone or potentially damage the magnet in the stabilizer.
Exactly I was gonna say the same thing
From what I was able to discern, Filmic Pro doesn't actual disable the physical OPTICAL stabilizing hardware, just the software that's applied on top of it. There'd still be that jiggle
@@SirWrender But there would be a lot less jiggle right? Because from what I saw you were using the default camera app.
Filmic also allows you to film at higher bitrates which does help you in post.
I love these engineering-meets-filmmaking videos. So creative, really pushes filmmaking and storytelling, and it's an incredible way to see how just getting out there and trying things is the only way to learn and improve!
I still can’t get over these kinds of camera rigs. So cool! Amazing how easy it can be to achieve these kinds of feats with today’s tech.
It went from Nat's super secure design, to magnets, to magnets plus rubber bands, to Wren riding a one wheel while holding said contraption
If they had a good way to remote control the iPhones Nat’s rig would have certainly been the way to go.
19:12 Did anyone else think that the piñata will just fall in pieces for the invisible cuts like an anime?
Been doin' this for a few years in my Airsoft vids :)
that’s dope!!
That last double slice on the piniata ending with a pose was pure movie gold!
2:05 "Nearly 16 years after 300 was released..." can't believe he is talking about 2007, time really does fly
19:35 Man, that last sequence by D was fucking COOL!
9:18 "the camera button is blocked" lol just swipe left and it opens the camera
I feel like instead of stacking the clips on top of eachother you could have lined them all up on the editing timeline, decide where you want to cut from one angle to another, and then create a zoom in/out transition to switch between clips. This would eliminate the misaligned edge you get from stacking the clips that were shot at slightly different positions on the rig.
Exactly my thinking. The edges don't need to line up perfectly, you just need to make the transition as seamless as possible.
Once you see the tear, you can't unsee it
Wow D's flourish at the end really was extra, effortlessly cool 😎
at 0:38, he said "there are at least 1800 abs in this movie", if we then divide it by six (sixpack) we will get, you guessed it, 300.
A coincidence, I think not
I always assumed that they shot in a ridiculous resolution in order to zoom between the shots, because the transitions looks so seamless when slowing the playback down.
I assumed that too
Apple (or any phone company) needs to make this a real feature in the future, its a really great way of filming. Props to everyone involved it looked awesome.
I could literally watch you guys make a whole 15minute video talking about Zack snyders whole filmography. If you can get back to man of steel going forward
Same
This shows how far smartphone camera tech has evolved.
I had so much fun watching this. Especially with D in Blue. What a ride :)
