    2001-02 season was the closest time Manchester United had ended what was called the golden era. The golden era in question was when Manchester United were the dominant force of the English football, having won 7 Premier League titles between 1993 and 2002, including the historic Treble in 1999.
    Ferguson's decision to retire at the end of the season was seemingly confirmed when the club went a slow start, losing 6 games (including a 3 defeats in row against London clubs in December), locking them in 9th at the end of 2001. However, in spite of this defeat vs Liverpool and Middlesbrough, they bounced back from being 9th to finish 3rd. That place was sealed after they surrendered a seemingly quattrick league title in a row to Sylvain Wiltord's winning goal for Arsenal. They almost qualified automatically to the Champions League group stage if they managed to beat Bayer Leverkusen and won the final against Real Madrid at Ferguson's old hometown, Glasgow.
    As a result, Ferguson didn't retire until 2013, while Steve McClaren was replaced by Carlos Queiroz as an assistant manager. The club then won another 6 Premier League titles and even won the 3rd Champions League in 2008 with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.
    I think if Ferguson ended his career in 2002, it will be a different story for English football. Liverpool could have won more league titles and possibly, the Champions League. There will be no rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

    • @FootkerSnooball
      @FootkerSnooball Год назад +4

      You think if ManUtd's level dropped if Ferguson left in 2002 Liverpool might've been a stronger or more consistent PL contender and interestingly you put "possibly" also win ChampionsLeague when they did win that despite not being PL contender but I get what you mean because really that was won because AC Milan underestimated them. ChampionsLeague you used to have to be so much more consistent to get to a CL final. Finish high in the league, be stronger in the group stage, face only hard teams (actual champions) in the knockouts so when it got to the final both finalists respected eachother but 2005 final was a joke really at half-time and if AC Milan had been doing that to a more respected team (which is unlikely because it would've more close in CL finals prior) they wouldn't have allowed their opposition a chance like they did Liverpool to get back in the game to then nick it on penalties.
      When they changed the CL format again for 03/04 season it did allow for more mediocre teams to win it that would've never won previous formats. Of course there's been some exceptions when some teams have been particularly good but it's still produced a lot of less worthy winners. ManUtd treble winners won the hardest format.
      By the way 2001/02 ManUtd may have been 9th in Dec 8th 2001 but it must've been not many points seperating many teams as ManUtd were already 1st by Jan 13th 2002 and stayed there for a while before slipping to 2nd then 3rd when they could no longer win the title I didn't feel with Liverpool overtaking ManUtd that was a true reflection but I knew Arsenal would at least be a test for ManUtd the next season which they were but ManUtd reclaimed the title as I always believed they would despite all the hype about Arsenal around that time.

      @@FootkerSnooballArsenal literally won the league at Old Trafford in 2002., so the hype was justified at the time.

    • @FootkerSnooball
      @FootkerSnooball Год назад +1

      @@gegenpress1695 After ManUtd had 3-peated and ManUtd were still way better than Arsenal in Europe.
      Arsenal only needed a draw in the OldTrafford 0-1 win so all the pressure was on ManUtd and ManUtd had Beckham injured from Deportivo dirty tackles in Quarter-finals unavailable for the rest of the season. Players like QuintonFortune, Blanc and Forlan (when he'd never scored for ManUtd) were in the starting lineup in fact 2 others who weren't good for ManUtd that season were (Barthez & Veron, the latter was better in his 2nd season, so was Barthez better in 2002/03 but that's not saying much because Barthez in multiple competitions was bad in 2001/02). The season would've been very different had ManUtd not allowed there to be a 6-point swing at Highbury Nov2001 when ManUtd were 0-1 up and made 3 defensive errors for Arsenal's goals including 2 absolute calamities from Barthez.
      Also v.Nistelrooy was only brought on during the 2nd half at OldTrafford vs Arsenal.
      But anyone can win a game or 2 against a team in the league especially by the odd goal it doesn't necessarily mean you're better than them. Where you win it mathematically whether it means a lot to the team doing it it doesn't really have much relevance. Technically ManUtd effectively won the title the next season 02/03 at Highbury (despite ThierryHenry's offside brace he got away with in a potential title decider??) Arsenal were good enough to win the 01/02 title but I never thought it was anything more than that. ManUtd had beaten them 6-1 only a year earlier as well when Arsenal had their 3rd consecutive trophyless season and ManUtd had won the treble 98/99, followed by 2 seasons in a row won at canter.
      2002/03 Arsenal again were out of CL before the quarterfinal. They got Campbell for free in 2001 somehow from Spurs and ManUtd certainly needed to strengthen in defence after 01/02 and did by getting Ferdinand to cancel out Arsenal having Campbell who was as good if not slightly better than Ferdinand at the time due to being a bit more in his prime.
      I think the amount ManUtd scored in 2001/02, as much as Arsenal were worthy winners didn't make me concerned about ManUtd.
      Also with Ferguson apart from that little transitional period 03/04 to 05/06 where ManUtd had sold half the ClassOf92 one of which being Beckham & having to wait for Cristiano to get up to standard in 06/07 and had also let Keane go & were having more goalkeeper issues until similar period. Any other time ManUtd lost a PL season there wasn't much in it and the rivals who won always thought they were the new force but I knew it would just make ManUtd come back stronger especially if it was won by the most slender way you can win it which 3 times it was there was literally nothing vs Arsenal 97/98 Chelsea 09/10 & ManCity 11/12 and even vs Blackburn 94/95 despite contrary to the other 3 nothing margin title losses instead of ManUtd being just unlucky to take zero pts in the crucial head-to-heads with the eventual winners which was the only reason ManUtd lost & could've easily won at a canter again had Utd got lucky in those games instead (and you could make a case in all 3 of them that ManUtd were cheated especially Chelsea 09/10 which was a definite) ManUtd's race with Blackburn only finished close because this time ManUtd were lucky in both Blackburn games had a couple of big decisions on ManUtd's side. I think it was more than evened out though by Cantona getting banned for the last 17 games (plus first couple of months of 95/96. I think Suarez doesn't get banned for that long for his racism or bites, I remember CraigBellamy pushed a spectator in the face completely unnecessarily when he was already being taken away by security and Bellamy literally got nothing for it and there's been many other inconsistencies with the FA with ManUtd often being unfavoured).

    • @FootkerSnooball
      @FootkerSnooball Год назад

      @@gegenpress1695 If ManUtd don't need to win that game they may not take the extra risks that may have been the reason Wiltord was able to score but it doesn't just give you an extra 5 title's by winning at a particular ground. It's just the luck of the fixture scheduling. This sort of thing may have been why ManUtd were way more successful because other teams were always hoping their wins had a bigger effect on ManUtd than they did and are over interested in ManUtd and mentally effects them so much. Arsenal never won back-to-back PL's or the CL.
      I remember Liverpool over exaggerated 1of their wins at OldTrafford 2009 when ManUtd were miles above Liverpool could afford to lose. Played 64 games that season and lost very few of them. Liverpool thought they were better than ManUtd because of that win lol they dud worse than ManUtd in every competition that season and ManUtd won 4 pieces of silverware to Liverpool's none, ManUtd broke records like going most amount of mins without conceding and also ManUtd went a record number of ChampionsLeague games unbeaten in that period which still hasn't been equalled by anyone to this day.

    This is much faster paced football than todays slow, tippy tappy, possession for possessions sake football. You had to have razor sharp technique to play in this game with balls fired in at you from all angles and you needed a robustness that a lot if players seemingly don’t have these days. Throw in the ridiculous concept of VAR - trying to measure an exact science through a subjective lens - and it’s clear todays game needs to re-learn a few things from football during these years.

    I thought people pretend there used to be Fergie time in that era?
    Home game vs Liverpool, less than 2mins stoppage-time played at 0-1 to the opposition at OldTrafford??
    And the game people bring up the most on the subject of 'Fergie time' was ManUtd 4-3 ManCity Sep2009 when there was a 3rd ManCity goal celebration that went well into stoppage-time plus stoppage-time substitutions etc...and they justified it straightaway when adding it all up that the amount of time ontop of the original minimum that was put up on the board was correct yet people still complained about it.
    Plus Martin Atkinson refereed that game and he hates ManUtd (& Spurs) he loved Chelsea so much he only stopped favouring them when Abramovic quit Chelsea because Atkinson also funnily enough retired at the same time and he has given special treatment to Arsenal also when they were ManUtd's closest trophy rivals.
