Top 50 Best Eurovision Songs by Percentage of Available Points (1957-2021)

  • It's a list of the 50 best Eurovision songs by percentage of available points. The video was made to give songs equal rights to get to the top. Every song's amount of points was divided by maximum possible score which the song could be awarded.
    The video includes songs from up to and including 2021's Eurovision Song Contest. It doesn't include songs of ESC 1956 since data from that year is unavailable. Since there were different voting rules in 1971-1974 where songs weren't ranked but simply rated from 1 to 10, the top tends to include more songs of that time. The songs (since 2004) that couldn't make it to the final weren't considered.
    In case of a tie current rules of Eurovision are applied. The one who gets the highest percentage of the countries who awarded points wins. If there is still a tie, it is counted how many sets of maximum points in relation to the number of countries each country received, etc.
    All rights belongs to EBU.

    With 529 points out of 1008 possible (52.48%), Netta would have placed 110th in this top. Which is why the video remains relevant after the Eurovision 2018.

    While I think this method is a very good way of determining just how successful a song was, there is a problem that lies in #1 on this list - Tu Te Reconnaitrais by Anne-Marie David scored 129 out of a possible 160 points. However, prior to 1975, the scoring system was different. The country that came in 1st by voters was given 10 points, then 2nd was given 9, then 3rd was given 8. Because of this, there were several instances where Luxembourg's entry came second in voting, but only missed out on 1 point, rather than 2. Because of this, it was able to accumulate more 'available' points.
    If 1973 had incorporated the 12-10-8 system of scoring, then Tu Te Reconnaitras would have scored 138 out of a possible 192 points, which equates to 71.86%, which would've put it at 16th on this list. That being said, the UK's 1976 entry of Save Your Kisses For Me was subject to the 12-10-8 scoring, so in my opinion, this would be a more accurate number one.
    Still, great video and good insight! Thanks for your work :)

      Justin Angelo Alvarez, so how do you get to that conclusion? How would you calculate it? I think the actual system is just the doubled 12 points system. So there couldn't be a different result in this kind of comparison.

    With the current system, I wouldn't be surprised if no one passes Salvador (or Kristian, for that matter). It's much harder to secure a high percentage of points when you actually have to top both the jury and televote separately, rather than averaging out and ranking 1st overall from a country...

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад +2

      Justin Kanda I recon his score will be beaten within the next 5 years or so. If you think about it Australia would have got a similar score last year but Australia are not part of europe and people don't like that so she missed out on probably millions of televotes just because of that.

    • @justinkanda228
      @justinkanda228 7 лет назад +5

      It could be political as you mentioned, but there were likely other unnamed factors that may have reasoned into Dami Im's results. Regardless, that was they best they've done in televoting in their three years so far.
      I'm not so sure about Salvador's record being beaten, though. 2017's edition was an exceptional year in which the jury/televoters fully agreed on the top two without much regard for the rest of the competition (Salvador had a 104p lead on Kristian in the jury vote and 39 in the televote, but also beat third place SunStroke Project by 112p in the televote and Robin by 164p in the jury vote). Loreen would have gotten 639 from a more spread-out televote (she only beat Russia by 11 in the televote and had 296 from the jury), Mans 632 (since he didn't top the televote), and Alexander Rybak 690 (which is respectable, but his jury score wasn't as high either; he beat Salvador's televote by 2, though!). Even if Mans were to get a perfect 48 from the two missing countries, it still would be short 10p to Rybak.
      A song now has to be *universally* appreciated and gain a high percentage of points from both voting groups separately--it can't just place 1st with the jury and 6th with the public of a particular country for the scores to average out to their top to receive a full 12p. Salvador had 31 2nd/3rd place finishes (for 8-10p) and 30 1st place finishes (for a full 12p)--61 top 3 finishes out of 82 possible is already roughly 3/4 of the voting pool. Statistically, this may never happen for a *long* time.

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад +1

      Justin Kanda quite a lot of the time the televoters and juries agree. In 2014 with Conchita for example and she didn't even get a particularly high score for a winner. And then there was måns who got a much higher score and didn't even win the televote. Plus we have to consider that Jamala's score was remarkably low for a winner considering the new system. She didn't win either sets of votes. I think that considering Salvador's percentage it will happen at least before the system changes again. All it would take is a politically favorable country to send a really good song in a year where most of the others songs were terrible.

    • @justinkanda228
      @justinkanda228 7 лет назад

      Definitely--since the 50/50 system, I believe they disagreed only three times: 2011, 2015, and 2016. But if we're looking at points/percentage of available points, there's a statistically low chance that the juries and televoters will /fully/ agree on a winner at the scale in which they approved of Salvador. Even though they agree most of the time, there's a much larger spread within the Top 10 that already cuts the winner's point percentage. If anything, Måns had the best chance since it was Top 3-heavy (much like this year was Top 2-heavy).
      I would think the next time a 700+ happens, there has to be just as much agreement with the winner as there is disagreement with the rest of the results. Basically, the points have to be disparate and spread out between the bottom 20 and as concentrated as it was with the top 2 or 3. Even as a runner up, Kristian Kostov basically has the 5th best score since this 50/50 system--again, last time we saw that was in 2015 when Russia scored 303 (and Italy 292).

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад

      Justin Kanda that's why I think this will happen in a year when all the other songs are bad but one is really good. Like in 2014, really Conchita shouldn't have won (I do love Conchita though, I hope I can get married to her one day) but really with all the homophobia and also that her song didn't really stand out (she has much better songs on her album) she shouldn't have won but she did cause 2014 was a particularly weak year with very few good songs. If the same thing happened but without the homophobia aspect and with a much better song then it could get 700+ points. It also seems like a really strange coincidence that this happened on only the 2nd year of this system. There isn't really any long term evidence to show that this isn't something that will happen every few years.

    There is a mistake concerning Italy 1964 at 4:34. Like in 1965 and 1966, each jury could award ALL its available 9 points to one country. With 15 other countries taking part, the maximum available was 135 points, not 75. Italy scored 36,2963 % of the potential maximum.

      Maximum for one country to get is all countries * 12 points but others can still get 10, 8, 6 etc. If there are 10 countries maximum is 120 but the second place could still get 100 in that case. 120 would be 100% and 100 would be 83.33%

    This is a really interesting idea! I suppose, though, including different voting systems gives a bit of a weird view. In 1971, 72 and 73 every song was independently given up to 10 points by each jury - they could give the same score to as many songs as they wanted. So it was theoretically possible for every song to get 100% of the vote. That's why those three years are so over-represented in this list - three from 1973 alone in the top ten.
    Likewise (but the opposite) with the pre-1971 scoring system - only one song makes it onto this list (1964), and that was the most crushing win ever, where the song scored more than twice the second-placed song. Perhaps it would be worth doing another video, "biggest wins ever", based on the percentage gap between first and second? I suppose that would disadvantage more recent songs, as they can't possibly win all the points on offer, but at least it would create a counterpoint to this video. Anyway, just a thought.
    [edit] Hang on, someone's already said all this. Sigh... read the comments before commenting...

      Because the maximum point you see in this video are the points that a country can receive, only of the take all sets of 12 point by all the countries. For example there are 3 countries. The maximum number is 24. The winner takes both 12 points, so it has 100% and the second place takes both 10 points and receives 20/24 possible, so they have a percentage of 83.33%.

    Televoting is more trustable, because the people who watch esc and vote are interested in music a lot as much as jury members in general. Fanatic votes are limmited on televoting, but it is just opposite on jury's voting. Also, Jury consists of only e few persons. Affecting a few persons' thoughts is easier than affecting many many people's thoughts as we see by living in esc.

  • @GazilionPT
    @GazilionPT 7 лет назад +1

    Good attempt at establishing a fair comparison between results, but even this method fails to achieve that...
    A fair comparison should only contemplate ESC from 1976 onwards.
    That's because 1976 was the first time they adopted a ranked voting (12 points to the 1st, 10 points to the 2nd, then 8 points, 7, 6, etc.).
    Until then, there was no ranked voting, which means one country could attribute the same points to multiple countries.
    For example, in 1973 Finland gave 4 points to Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France; and the Netherlands gave two 10s - the maximum - to both Spain and the UK. And no country would get 0 points; actually, the minimum a country could give another country was 2 points. Which meant that, no matter how bad you were, you would get at least 32 points (or 20% of the maximum possible).
    By contrast, now, even if a jury thinks country A and country B are basically as good, it must differentiate between them: one will get 12 points and the other will just get 10.

    • @GazilionPT
      @GazilionPT 7 лет назад +1

      If we recalculate the 1973 results with such ranking, then Spain (the country that came 2nd) falls from 78% (of 160 max) to about 70% (of 192 max).
      I say "about" because ranking does not allow attributing the same points to multiple contestants, so it's not clear how some countries would rank some contestants.

    Is this a proverb everywhere? : "Don't trust statistics you haven't forged yourself". I guess it would take quite some mathematic acrobatics to get to better comparability. But still it's only statistics. It doesn't say very much about the quality of a song. So don't cry.

    • @AlexESC
      @AlexESC  7 лет назад

      The problem is that the jury didn't need to give a ranking but simply score songs from 1 to 5. The voting system wasn't unique though, 1917 and 1972 had the same rules but I guess jury liked 1973 songs more.

      RJ Portugal was on Eurovision with the new system therefore they'll use his score with that. If he wanted to be part of the old system then he should have entered 2 years earlier so how does that "not make sense"?

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад

      RJ there's about 10 different systems and tbh it's perfectly fair. What do you want them to do? Work every single country for all the different systems all into one just to make it more pleasing for you to watch? His score worked out differently in the new system. It works against some and in favour of others. Get over it.

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад

      RJ so should they just take every eurovision song ever and try and get them into one system just to please you? Salvador was part of the new system and that's just how it is. It affects everyone in different ways depending on what system you're part of. You know back in the 1960s the juries had to rate each individual song from 1 to 5 and then the one with the most points won. It's luck of the draw at the end of the day. Besides, we all know Portugal's score would have been cut in half if Russia was there for political reasons? So that's an unfair advantage right there. It's not all about you. If you find this video doesn't cater for your likings enough then why are you still here? You clearly don't understand how complicated it would be to make it all 'fair' in your eyes.

    • @lindsey0806
      @lindsey0806 7 лет назад +1

      RJ portugal would have still won I think but his score would have been hurt by it. Also this video is just for fun. No one forced you to watch it. Besides, Salvador hates eurovision so he doesn't care if he's been misrepresented tbh.

    • @AlexESC

      That's due to the voting system which was in place. If 2015 had the 2016 voting system, Måns would have had only 632 points compared to Salvador's 758. You can see it in one of my videos which I should update now.

      Sorry, I follow the same principles Wikipedia does. These performers represented the country under this exact flag. You could even say it was a different country since there was another regime. Same goes for the Olympics, for example. If there was Yugoslavia in this list or, hypothetically, Nazi Germany, I would have put their flags. I hope, one day Spain will be back in the game for the lead so I could finally put the modern flag in.
