  • Beatrice Berrut's transcription of Mahler's Adagietto from Symphony no. 5.
"Music can unite people because it is probably the only language that everyone can understand; it speaks to you in a very direct way. So probably it is the only common language humanity has." Beatrice Berrut has transcribed the mysterious Adagietto of the 5th Symphony by Gustav Mahler for piano and reveals truly orchestral colours of sound and breathtaking dynamics. An interplay of gleaming sparkles of sound & emotion.

Have you heard the piano roll of Mahler playing his own transcription of the first movement from this symphony? I didn't know Mahler even played the piano, until recently.

Yes, I have heard them, it is quite amazing to be able to have access to such material. Despite his pianistic skills, he only wrote one piano piece (a Suite for piano) that unfortunately got burnt in a fire during WWII, leaving us pianists "orphans" ;)

@@BeatriceBerrut You know, I thought his transcription of the first movement was very effective for the piano. Maybe you can use it as a model and transcribed the whole symphony? I think that would make an exciting recording. The Beethoven/Liszt transcriptions are great. I learned a lot about the symphonies by listening to the Kataris recording. Beethoven's symphonies have a thinner texture, so maybe it's easier to transcribe effectively. Anyhow, it might be an interesting project (maybe transcriptions for two pianos?). Sending my love from NY. Hopefully, one day, I'll have an opportunity to go to your concert and thank you in person. - Daniel
