I really have to commend you for trying to save items for the family. My mom purchased a house from a guy who's mom passed away and I helped her clean it out. The guy was a jerk and just wanted the cash. He didn't care what happened to everything in the house. There was a whole lifetime of memories in there. Eventually I managed to get in contact with the daughter of the deceased and get quite a bit of things to her. From family photos to heirloom furniture. That poor woman stood in the driveway SOBBING when we started bringing boxes out. She thought she had lost a lifetime of memories of her mother. When my mom handed her, her mothers wedding dress though..she really lost it. I felt so bad for her.

I really love the way you acknowledge & respect the original owners' "contributions" when you're going through all the stuff. So many of the "Storage Unit Guys" or resellers, in their videos, are SO focused on only the money & how cheap they got something -- they often strike me as predatory & self serving.
I realize that the whole aim of doing what you do is to make a profit, but I like how you are so interested in the history of things & in sharing that history.
I only started watching you a short while ago, but you're one of my favorite RUclips channels. There IS a good balance between buying/selling & appreciating.

Reminds me of when I moved into a 1930s house in North London. An old lady was passing who said she lived in one further up the road and explained how there used to be a fold-down bath in the odd alcove in the galley kitchen and that the tree at the end of the garden had been planted by the family who first moved in. The only toilet was the outside one (still there when I left) but this was a luxury at the time. It had some of the old lino (in a very bad state) under the flooring upstairs and some of the old, possibly original, floral wallpaper on the wall behind the boiler (which had to be replaced). Love seeing these glimpses of history.

On pattern books. The fabric stores that sell patterns kept many pattern books for customers to browse. The books were updated periodically and the store would sell off the outdated books to interested customers. My mother bought several of them. She sewed all of her own clothing and did theater costumes and doll clothes in her later years. I agree there would be people interested in a book of vintage styles.

At 5:55 your moving a suitcase and a "wicker" seat falls down...
Are you aware that that is the seat for a rocking chair, you'll actually find the sides for it used in your staircase used as "railing"... ;-)

Thrilled you are going back to the original wood trim, looks like you lucked out on the doors in the hallway having minimal layers of paint. Bedrooms you may not be as lucky. Remember you can cook the old brass hinges and other hardware from doors and windows that have paint on, including the screws, in a crock pot, leave it cooking in just water and the paint will peal off, tooth brush works great. Don't use any brass cleaner as you want the aged look. Great idea to incorporate the old sink back into the kitchen.

I would crank up the record player and put the shiny stainless steel needle at the start of the record. The song went like this: There's a hole in the bucket, dear Lisa, my dear. With what will you fill it, dear Henry, my dear. And I think the next verse was "I'll fill it with straw, dear Lisa, my dear.... etc. Can't remember the rest.

They're awesome - I have 4 of them A"N"D a really good allergies air filteration HVAC - but I got my mobile plug in air purifiers here in the states for cheap at Walmart. I *highly* recommend them for just quality air. That house needs it - and you and your family and workers need it. : - )

    @cherish78748 5 лет назад +54

Alex, you were closer to being on the money about the flooring the first time around. Unfortunately the floor in your main room is old sub-floor and not meant to be visible hardwood floor. The floor in the second living room was meant to be visible flooring. You can tell by the way the old sub-floor is wider, rougher, has those end cuts butted up against other end cuts, is not tightly joined, doesn't already have a finish on it (unlike the floors in the other room) and other tell tale signs that it was not meant to be for presentation. Unfortunately it will not take sanding and finishing, at least not very well. Whereas the beautiful flooring in the second living room is going to sand and refinish beautifully. I've lived with old subflooring in more than one Victorian and pre-war home where attempts were made to re-do it as presentation flooring. It's very difficult to make it look or function right. It's typically handled by painting it. Sadly, the old presentation flooring was ripped out from the main living room. So you were right in your first impression. They exposed the subfloor, and laid the plywood over that before carpeting. This was probably done when they took out the walls, which left big holes in the presentation flooring. Solved by tearing it all out. I'm sorry and I hate that because this beautiful old home deserved it's original floor!

I noticed in your earlier vids that the railing Balusters on the stairs leading to the second floor were repurposed rocking chair legs. In this episode you rummaged past the rest of the chair in the attic. It's kind of a nice touch. If I were to purchase the house I'd source another rocking chair and finish out the railing with another set. Maybe paint them white to match the railing.

Well that was his original goal - to donate all that he he presorted as NOT TRASH to charity. The charity shop totally failed timely pick up and items became snow covered. The idea of encouraging folks to just come and take away - just as you do at the end of a yard sale - is a great one. Hope people quickly took advantage of that, otherwise eventually it will all have to be dumpstered.

Love this series and hope you will keep buying and restoring hoarded house. Fascinating watching you dig through all that stuff and find treasures. It’s like hoarders, rehab addict, American pickers, this old house, storage wars, and antiques road show wrapped into one; but better!!! Just so great. And I love that Hans. What a cool friend you happened to make and a helpful, knowledgeable handyman you discovered. He Came for the trees, stayed to fix up the house! It seems like he does it all! But I have to write that I Can’t believe you threw that working mid century modern vintage fridge out!! It was in great, pristine physical and working condition and it could have been cleaned out and sold for at least a couple thousand, maybe more. People seek these original fridges out when they are redoing their kitchens to mid century modern aesthetic. The real vintage ones in that kind of pristine condition are HIGHLY sought after, and most people have to settle for replicas ‘cause the originals in pristine condition are very hard to come by. You missed a golden opportunity right there 😢

I had the same issue a few years ago. It was a partially burned house and couldn't get anyone to come. Brand New washer and dryer just 4 months old, lawn mowers that worked, crafts out the wazoo. Finally hired a company to help and just about everything good was used to pay them for their work, so it worked out good for me and the workers. But I was shocked charities we're so particular to come and pick up the stuff that I had cleaned up and sorted over 1/2 alone

    • @stanpatterson5033

Funny thing about charities... they're happy when you bring anything to them, but it's quite a different story when you want them to come get something that you want to give away. The interactions I've had with some of the "personnel" who work or drive their trucks has also been somewhat remarkable. When it's all said and done, after the experiences that I've had with various charitable organizations over the years, I don't bother with those ones anymore. Their loss, not mine.

When my nephew and I cleaned out my sister's place, a guy named Steve drove past the open garage and saw the dumpster, swung around the block and stopped and said, "You're not throwing out the scrap metal, are you? There's money in that!" We assured him there would be a scrap metal bin too, and before long he was back, driven by curiosity to offer to help. He did a heck of a lot of work just for pizza and the odd collectible that took his fancy. We also set out quite a few things with a "Free" sign beside them and everything disappeared except the world's ugliest lamp. :)

It's really interesting to see how much less fabric was used in the 1945 Butterick dresses than in the 1952 Butterick dresses. I always understood the war effort made fabric more expensive so less was used in clothing. The clothing patterns economized. Well you could really tell in those catalogs. The 1952 dresses were so much more pouffy, full skirted, and wide. A big difference! And that explains a lot about 50's style - a reaction against economizing during the war.

Someone has probably said this in the comments already. If not, the old pots, like the enamel one with the hole, can be set a couple of inches into your flower garden. You then add some beautiful annuals and they make great decorative pieces especially beside an old wooden ladder👍 I have several.
