The first time I saw Lucy’s coat I was mesmerised and instantly fell in love. I could crochet but have never heard of Irish crochet. Since then I have been practicing and now I have all my motifs. My husband is busy covering my board I’m going to assemble my motifs on. Excited but also nervy to start with the background netting.
I love the first part of the video where you explain that handmade things take time and therefore money to make (and most good quality yarns are very expensive too, so for a whole crocheted jacket, that makes it more expensive as well) and I think all the people on tiktok and instagram asking for a pattern and saying it's gatekeeping, most of the time are never going to use the pattern after it's made. because sometimes it takes months to make a pattern, and the fast scrolling people have already forgotten about the things they asked patterns for. So that's a whole topic to keep in mind when you see all these people ask for patterns of every single piece they see on social media
😅honestly, making a pattern for this cardigan will be extremely difficult since it's more like going with the flow. Yes, it's a lot of work and the artists should he paid enough. As for the yarn, Lusi Lace uses Alize maxi yarn which isn't very expensive...it's mostly 2.5-3 dollars per skein 😅
It's been around since the 1800s~ do an image search for "Irish crochet wedding dress"~ you'll be astounded at what they made, with thread only a little thicker than sewing thread❣️😉🤩
see i would too! it’s like having company while crafting😬😬 but i’m sticking to the shorter videos for now, maybe one day we can do a very long live crochet marathon
I’ve been trying reverse-engineer my own coat and your vid has already given me more, and better, information than my own 5 months of research. Bravo! And THANK YOU!!
It's so refreshing to hear someone with your take on the price of creating, the entitlement of some people, everything you expressed in your "rant" in the beginning. Honestly? Preach! 👏 PS: Editing to add that you are adorable! 😊
It's her and her mom's store. I did want to buy it. It's from Poland. It's great prices . I was going to buy one. She was ok to ship to Canada. I do think she is charging exactly what she should. It was going to take a couple of months.
@@caroleenasclosetThey are from Ukraine ❤ and now live in Poland, you can see in her youtube Chanel bio where are they from. P.S. just founded your account and love your work ❤
❤ those extra loops are called padding. It’s done to give extra strength and thickness to the motif. Multiple motifs are made then joined together to make Irish Crochet. Ira Rott has a lot of Irish Crochet videos here on RUclips.
fwiw, i would definitely click on a seven hour process video 😂 i love seeing people go through the learning process and hitting roadblocks and creating something new- it’s really refreshing and interesting to me!
Crocheting "backwards" creates a sort of "roll" on top of the stich & that adds texture & that brocade look to whatever stitch or flower you are making. I learned how to do that with watching BonnieBayCrochet here on YT. I started this coat but have yet to sew the pieces together. Kudo's to you because it definitely is time consuming. xx Just subscribed. Thank you for your videos, I can't wait to see how you do it!
Wow, such a work! Can't wait to see your jacket result! Ludmila shared, what she sells dresses for 5000$, a coat would be probably 8000$ i think. She works with her mother and her daughter. A coat takes 2 weeks for made, she said in her videos.
Absolutely love you sharing your research! I love your personality and passion for learning styles that interest you to make beautiful wearable art! I would watch you for seven, ten, or fifteen hours straight and work along with you! Weshare the same passion.
I'm from Brazil, I only know how to crochet amigurumis and I have absolutely no intention of making this coat, but I'm loving the journey. New subscriber here!
just a tip: you can get the backwards stitch loop just by doing the single crochet but when you have the two loops on the hook, you pull it up slightly and twist the hook by 360° and then finish as usual, in my opinion it is easier this way
Love This! I actually liked your practice motif but I really like chunky and textured fiber art. I can't waaaaait for the next video! Thanks Caroleena :)
for the official one i used a chunkier yarn!! (not the chunkiest but chunkier than the practice!) i’m usually a thin yarn girly but the big yarn looked so good on the reference i had to try!
@@caroleenascloset Oh Yay!! :) I get that, I am using a pretty thin yarn (not the thinnest 😄 im a bit afraid! still new to this.) and its turning out really pretty so far! The chunky yarn with this one makes sense because of the like thick start to the magic ring and the padding. I'm sure yours is gonna be beautiful!
Girl, you are giving me life with this video! I'm soooo glad I found it!! I've been planning on doing the research and now you've done all the hard work ❤ new subscriber!✌️❤️😊
ahhh i’m glad the research is coming to good use! specially with projects like this there’s so many little things you have to learn! thank you so much for subscribing❤️
Irish crochet is next on my list to do. Really looking forward to seeing more of your journey with this project. Maybe it'll put some fire under my butt:D
Irish crochet is pretty popular in Russia where a lot of women are into fine crafts. The finer the stitches and accurate work, the higher its value. She really does sell her dresses/coats for $1000-5000. Only yarn costs couple hundred dollops and Irish Crochet (plus Freeform crochet) requires a TON of time and patience. You also need to know how to prepare and cut out sewing pattern pieces, block crochet motifs, and sew under layers ( which also needs money for fabric).
This is exactly the kind of look I've been searching for to make my wedding dress! I'm so excited about the next video. How long did it take you to learn and also how long to make the final coat?
A while ago, after seeing that video, I became interested in finding Irish crochet patterns. However, I'm not sure I have the patience to actually do this type of crochet. The hook and yarn used for Irish crochet are so small ir delicate, that I think it would be very frustrating and make me want to cry 😅
yeah making a actual more traditional irish crochet project with the tiny yarn seems like a big big challenge😰😰 maybe one day we’ll find the motivation💪🏼

Isn’t this also called “tatting” crochet? I immediately recognized the look of the lace, so I had to come see, it’s such a beautiful but kinda dying art form, I have some pieces I inherited from family members who knew how to do it it’s truly beautiful to hold it in ur hands it even feels a little different than typical crochet pieces it’s lighter + more airy 💖 the talent it takes to be able to do it is astounding, you need so much patience it takes *hours* I don’t blame you even a little it’s impressive you made something that large and it didn’t take a year 😅
i thought tatting was done with a different hook, a “shuttle” thingy? i follow a couple of lace makers that do “tatting” and that’s what they use!! i seems to take agesssss😭 i would love to learn it one day because it’s so pretty🥺🥺
@@caroleenascloset Omg Ty for the reply! That’s why I had to ask! I wasn’t sure if it’s technically different or not! Backwards single crochet is called the crab stitch
You can also do grounding with a needle ( in finer garments). I find it much easier and faster but will stick to free chain netting for coats
