How do you define the ABSOLUTE prime of a CLASSICAL ballet dancer? I'm puzzled by statements like 'ballet dancer X [in his/her late 30s] enters now his/her absolute prime'. That's not to say I don't find some dancers in their late 30s riveting, but entering 'absolute prime' close to retirement...? For me the absolute prime is a time in the life of a dancer when the body is STILL very reliable, and the artistry is ALREADY remarkable. Most dancers enter this enviable period in their mid or late 20s (if they enter it at all, but this is beside the point). How long does it last? It depends, but it certainly doesn't last indefinitely and it doesn't get better with age and every new injury.
I find the topic very interesting particularly in the context of bravura variations. Less imaginative dancers usually try to amp up the difficulty level through a quatitative approach - more jumping, or forcing the extension, or fitting in extra revolution(s) in turns & pirouettes. Often (but not always) at the expense of musicality or linking steps. (How many dancers would polish their phrasing in their absolute prime? Or emphasize their port de bras or épaulement? Or do an entrechat-huit instead of a six?)
And so I hit upon the idea of making compilation(s) of the same variation, performed by the same dancer, throughout their performing lifetime, to see how their understanding developed. And to test my definition of 'absolute prime' ;)

l saw live misha doing don q pdd in venice with gerlsey kirkland in 1975-his success was over any description .maurice bejart was sitting casually near me (he also was in venice these days to show his work ACQUA ALTA dedicated to venice itself with his ballet of xx siecle) when misha finished his solo bejart was silent ,like perplexed for a short time ,then started to clap and to cheer roaring like a lion for long time despite he had in that time magnificent male dancers in his company he also had not seen jet some like baryshnikov-was long ago ,l was 21 alas

Theater is spacious as existence, theater alone is boring and empty, but the creations of human make it luminous, this dancer is in harmony as he and the theater are one piece, so human and his creations in existence are like a dancer and theater are both two but one.

This is a splendid compilation, thank you! I liked the 1983 version best, primarily because of the opportunities that production gave for him to display his acting skills as well as dancing. My favorite clip of all time is the "cups" scene. He is so beautiful and he also cracks me up. 😂

I commend his great insight to vary the chore, lol, for our benefit 40 years later. Never boring and always musical. Port de bras to die for. Intricate pattern for the grand pirouette 1968 and what a splendid exit at 8:55! He is perhaps a tiny bit heavier in the last one, but has such stage presence and style, the execution is so polished, that it hardly matters (and what a costume!) There's more to the Don Quixote variation than tricks, I don't understand why people are always raving about elevation and number of turns but seldom mention style.
Surprise. Not even the cool kids got into the top6 ? The POB version is just Rudi being Rudi...hopeless.
He was 35 in the last one. Yes, his last manège was not as light as when he was 19, but boy, the delivery was so much more polished! And the phrasing and interpretation were simply superb! I have not seen anybody to this day be such a complete performer as he was. He wrote the book on male technique. In this compilation, we can see all the tricks they do today, he created them.

Thank you for this magnificent compilation. It's such a pleasure to watch. I had seen them all except 1975 #1. Each is wonderful and there are noticeable changes in the variations and codas. I think my favorite is the 1976. I love all the Spanish tours en l'air, not to single out one step but also the revoltades and tours de reins [? not sure about the name] in 1975 #2 are spectacular. His musicality, lightness, ballon, speed, the beauty of his port de bras are dazzling. I'm with ballet janie in all her comments, especially the 1968 grand pirouette. Also his hairstyle brings a smile! In the 1986 version he is only slightly less airborne, but then he is 35 years old too.

In the 1983 presentation with Cynthia Harvey, his physical prowess was slightly diminished but more than compensated by better polish, control and acting ability. He was a complete artist in full control of his craft. It is my favorite also.

the 1967 vaganova graduation partner is ELEONORA KUVATOVA that spent ,later ,her carrer in UFA from where she was .later from what l know worked also in west as teacher .anyway on the video surely is she .she also was very regarded in her theatre during her carrer .
she was artistic director of the Nureev college and of the ballet of the Bashkyr opera and ballet theater in Ufa - Leonora Kuvatova
infact ,l was told that she after a brillant carrer as dancer developed in an important pedagogue

absulutely yes now in ufa they are very proud of him and since already years the accademy in ufa is named nureyev and there are also festivals in russia dedicated to him both in ufa and in kazan,also the same nureyev when in west sometime spoke about ufa and his company (he he was a member before leaving for leningrad accademy) and always rated the company rather good and the main ballerina of the company ,the vaganova 1941 graduate ,zaituna nasretdinova ,an excelent dancer
