  • Bank Holiday Weekend 2003 we visit the ESR to ride behind 47758 and 37798. Watch the clips to see why this wasn't achievable. However, 59004/102 were there to admire

I just been watching your video. I didn't realise it was that long ago this happened. I was up there the day the 37 derailed. I had been lucky enough to get a cab ride in the 37 on its last run before the derailment happened. It was taken off the train & run around to the other track near the old signal box where it was parked up & left. It was not long after the driver & myself had returned to the platform when it ran away to where it derailed. All I remember was seeing the ESR GM running as fast as he could down the platform towards the bridge when he realised it shouldn't be moving. If I am correct part of the parking brake mechanism had failed. The person seen at 15:20 in the high vis vest is an ex work colleage of mine who used to be a volunteer guard on The ESR.

Excellent video! I had a feeling that the 37 was off the road when I saw them running the 47 around near the beginning ! Was that an ews driver on the 47 , thought I might know him ? Keep up the good work !

It was 16 years ago and I couldn't differentiate between volunteers and their drivers, sorry

Mike Wilcock Not a problem , thanks for the reply . Didn’t realise it was that long ago , I should have paid more attention to the description ! I saw plenty of locomotives derailed when I was at bath road, which is where I thought I reconised the driver from.

Did the Locomotive get caught on a Catch point?

Yes, that's the safety system to stop the loco running into the station. It worked.

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways it did thank God. Is a token required for run around movements which I assume this is and is it electronic tokens in operation here.

Like the video but alas it shows only to clearly how certain areas of the railway have fallen into such neglect state eg the platform at Cranmore West Halt - Merryfield Lane Halt ( would you wan`t to get of the train only to be greeted by this mess ? ) and finally Mendip Vale not much better than Merryfield Lane ............ i should point out that this video was taken some years ago and is not a reflection on to days volunteer workforce in 2020 .... but beware of the mystery person who when in charge of a chainsaw thinks nothing of cutting down trees quicker than they can grow ...... he`s a menace to the preservation movement ............ you have been warned.
