Best sax clinic I have seen so far! James shared some techniques that in my 47 years of playing sax I was not aware of. This clinic will improve your playing by opening up new advenues of expression on your horn. Thanks James!

Voici Professor of Jazz Saxophone Techniques and Improvisational Studies, Monsieur Carter.
James Carter is all about Jazz in its true eclectic significance. He remains creatively unapologetic, as he understands that Jazz is an 'Auto-Physio-Psychic' art form which must assert and affirm improvisational spontaneity of a multiplicity of thoughts, ideas and expression.
Many young Jazz lions have emerged during the mid-80s. James stands out as the most intrepid and adventurous artist not only on saxophones, but on bass clarinet and flutes.
It is apparent to me that, using only the baritone saxophone in a single tune, James can be heard exuding, not only baritone saxophone sound-voice, but sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, C-melody, bass, and contra bass saxophones. His altissimos are 'Hyper'.
James Carter knows his audience and applies the particular tonal expressiveness appropriate to the 'now'/present audience - Don Byas, Chu Berry, Illinois Jacquet, ...Benny Carter (alto saxophone) Hear him with the String Orchestras; how he tames the various instruments tonally and by way of finesse.
I adore the two young saxophonists also. Their sound is steady and Smooth; improvisation is well-structured. On soprano saxophone, one of them has delivered 'Body And Soul' marvelously well, with melodic, harmonic and Improvisational lyricism .They, the both of them, are 'set' with a snap-shot of spiritual emotionalism.
Excellent performance; great video. Thanks for posting!

Carter's sound is definitely different, and had I heard him years ago, I might not have liked him. But now, I think he's great. He takes after Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis in many ways, with the growly sound and a lot of those chromatic licks that seem to stand out against the changes. I had similar reactions to guys like Paul Gonsalves and even John Coltrane when I first heard them. Give Carter a shot. He'll grow on you.

I have enjoyed this workshop, it is one the most brilliant workshops I have ever had an opportunity to see. James Carter is a great clinician as well as one of the greatest saxophonist. Here he seems to have absorbed the whole jazz saxophone tradition and styles. Here he has said a lot about saxophone's history, styles and virtuosic tips. I also liked all the 3 tenor sax players, I can see and feel their potential to become great players. Thanks to the Mariachi Sax Boutique, I never knew anything about it here in the United Kingdom. As an upcoming saxophonist myself I have learned a lot from this clinic. Well done to all!!!

JAMES CARTER HAS BEEN BRILLIANT SINCE HE WAS A FETUS. HE IS ABSOLUTELY A FINE CLASS A MUSEUM QUALITY ARTIST! HISTORY IS BEING WRITTEN FOR HE IS ONE OF THE BEST, I FIRST SAW HIM IN DETROIT IN 1989 AT A DETROIT JAZZ FEST JAM SESSION, AND I KNEW THEN I WAS STRUCK BY JAZZ LIGHTNING!! 30 YEARS LATER HE IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL ARTIST AND PERFORMER! UNSELFISH WITH HIS BRILLIANCE HE SHARES HIS VAST KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAXOPHONE AND THE MAKING OF MUSIC WITH THE WORLD!! HIS MUSIC IS SIMPLY THE BUGATTI OF JAZZ!

Everyone talks tone and articulation. James Carter is what music is all about. Anyone can play notes on a page, but not everyone can express themselves like that. Triple tongue, circular breathing, octave jumps, the list goes on! James Carter will out-play anyone on this earth! Stop being technical and nitpicky and appreciate GREATNESS!

Both great players, it's clear that the second horn player listens more and takes his time. The second one is out to prove instead of play. The second player is clearer and has a even better tone.

The first at least had a strong sound! The second player was absolutely fantastic though. Then it seems James Carter can just combine the two strengths they had into his own sound.

Great clinic JC, I loved how you got everyone involved and made it fun for the audience to listen, keep swinging, I’m going to Paris today turning 65 on Friday and wanted to go where my man Dexter Gordon played. Going to be filming Godfather of Harlem when I get back on Monday 12/18/23, I play the Godfather of Queens in the movie, directors are thinking about adding a segment of how Jazz was a part of people lives, and as long as there is someone playing Jazz never dies and our heroes live on thru us, I’m combining the acting, modeling and playing Jazz to our lives, May peace be with you!

at about 14:35-15:30. This separate a genius from a technical robot. Being technical is wonderful, having natural soul and touch is wonderful. Being able to express your soul with outstanding technique is what gives you the genius quality in a way.

"there will never be another you"; "body and soul"; "there is no greater love" (with a very nice feat. from the local player); than they play "stardust" to demostrate don byas' stuff (these are all love songs!). after that "on the sunny side of the street". all very famouse jam session's tune.

Some parts, early on, remind me of stories about Bird in the late 40's. For instance, it's an old story that he put Miles through a bit of not-so-good-natured fun by listening to his solos on certain tunes, turning around and playing them back to him note-for-note, then improvising on them.

Carter literally kicks peoples asses with his style lol.
He truly stands on his own in that reguard, and he has mastered all of the fundamentals. What I see here is Innovation. Taking the instrument beyond its generic purpose and making it Mind-Fucking brilliant entertainment that you are forced to respect. From the nasty lows to the dog-Infuriating Altissimo notes.
    Thats whats up.
