  • On July 1st 2018, Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly was traded to the St. Louis Blues after watching his team finish dead last in the league's standings and admitting that the constant losing had made him question his love of the game. Less than a year later, the former 2nd round pick would produce a career season, be named an NHL All Star, win the Frank J. Selke Trophy, lift the Stanley Cup and be awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy after helping the Blues win their franchise's first championship.
This is the story of Ryan O'Reilly's journey from lost love to playoff MVP!

I wonder how Jack Eichel felt after Ryan O’reilly got traded to St.Louis and than would go on to immediately win the cup.

When I heard Ryan O’Reilly was coming to St. Louis I danced. When I heard it was Berglund and Sobotka that we’re going I did backflips. When I saw him in a Blues Jersey he looked like a Blue. He is so awesome to watch and he is one of the most complete players in the league.

Long time Erie resident here, been watching this dude play since his Otters days and man it was cool to see him hoist the Cup after all he’s been through. Plus I’ve wanted to see the Blues finally get one since the damn 90’s so I can only imagine how lifelong Blues fans felt to finally win the Cup and to do it by beating Boston. You couldn’t write a better redemption story

even when the blues got off to a dreadful start in 2018, O'riely was the one bright spot. Every blues fan could see that he wasn't the problem. In fact he was the only bright spot at the start of the year.

  • @ckendall67

Definitely one of the better individual bounce-back stories in hockey, from being mired with a losing team in Buffalo despite constantly putting solid point totals, and then actually questioning your passion for the game you play, then getting shipped to the St. Louis Blues who, despite their early struggles that season, had the make-up of a team that was ready to seriously compete in the playoffs. The coaching change plus the call-up of goalie Jordan Binnington in early-January gradually turned their season around. And O'Reilly was fantastic that season, leading the team in scoring in both the regular season and the playoffs. He's also one of the classiest players both on and off the ice as well.

@@KrisVic91 yeah, I have two cousins there, they both seem really depressed. Buffalo is an old industrial city, so in the 90's especially I remember driving through there on the way home from myrtle beach family vacation and seeing alot of old rusty factories, it looks like they're trying to revive and gentrify some of it. Then you got winter which is warmer than it used to be but anyone living immediately south of the great lakes like Michigan is going to be 10 degrees colder and windy from lake effect. The ground is extra frozen, I've never been more of a bitch then when I had to play football in a port city in November, I hit the ground with my leg not even that badly and I had a cut on my knee from cold dry skin + frozen ground, so I found out quickly that I wasnt nearly as tough as I thought I was lol so i just coasted through the game from then on. The summers are decent but short and then it's just alot of gloomy grey days. I do like people from western New York more so than eastern tho so theres that.

I’m not watching this, the narrator’s voice annoys me. I just came here to crap on the Buffalo Sabres, possibly the most pathetic franchise in all of sports. I used to be a fan (Dominik Hasek in the 90s) but years of idiocy have driven me off. Anyway, I like to think the stupid, short-sighted trade of O’Reilly eventually got Sabres GM Botterill fired. On the other hand, O’Reilly was so upset with the bums surrounding him, both on and off the ice, I honestly think he might have quit or played in Europe if the Sabres didn’t want trade him. Sure can’t blame him if that were the case.
