I know I'm going to get ratioed to hell for saying it but peat beds sequester carbon. Disturb them, and they emit thousands of years of stored GHGs, as CO2 or methane, most in the first few years then tailing off over a couple of decades.
It wouldn't take much for you to recommend people check it's legal to wild forage for fish tanks and to be sensitive about where they do it, and it's easy not to recommend peat. You have been keeping fish a long time, surely you must know reliable alternatives?
