Displaced Palestinians in Jabalia organised an inter-school football tournament in which two shelter schools competed for a trophy that was “dug up from under the rubble”, with the aim of sending “a message as an oppressed people fighting for their rights,” according to the referee at the tournament.
About 400 Palestinian athletes have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, many of them part of Gaza’s football community. All of Gaza’s professional football stadiums and the headquarters of the Palestinian Football Association have been partially or completely destroyed by Israeli attacks.
