Thanks for sharing, i have a br80 for few years now, love it , but always got lost when trying to change the drum pattern, used to just leave it playing one pattern all through the song, i have learned something new now, thanks
Hi. Only just got this machine and struggling organising the drum patterns. Your video has helped a great deal. Now to get my Stratocaster in full flow. Many thanks. Subscribed.
Thanks a lot for adding a tutorial on drum patterns. I've had my BR for two or three years and have always found this part of its functionality a bit daunting and just use the metronome. This has given me new hope! Ps. I have a bit of red Babybell skin on the shuffle dial to turn it easier!
Thank you for these videos.I bought one on eBay and use Logic and computer usually.I love multitrack recorders too. Can't wait for the delivery now.I'm hoping the Editing of Patterns still works on computer too Cheers!
Thank you for the drum demonstrations. I have had the BR for 18 months and never really knew how to use the drums properly and couldnt find anything on youtube. I will follow your instructions and let you know how I get on
@@davidprocter1585 Please share any more tips on drum programming, guitar work, looping etc. I could never undertand how to programme the drums until I saw your videos. I have recorded a lot of cover instrumentals using the preloaded drums but obviously with no control on drum breaks and fills. I have to experiment the drumming by trial and error I guess. I am sure there are other users in the same boat as me. Thanks for the tips
@@dominicfernandes8038 the other thing I've done on some tracks is augment the drum track with keyboard drumming, eg congas, tambourine, additional cymbal crashes etc, and I've used snare and Tom Tom's from my keyboard where I couldn't quite find the right thing on the br drums. For that I use a metronome setting on the br to keep time while I play the other instruments, then switch the pattern to "break" where I want to keep to the time line but have my augmented drum sounds. There's a bit on my vid "missed" where I bring in congas into the overall mix, and the fade at the end of "hebridean sea trout part 1" features the music stopping and percussion rythym contiung into the fade. @@dominicfernandes8038 well, that's one up on me! Sorry, its difficult to explain without demonstrating what I mean! I've a guitar tone/fx one to do 1st, then maybe I'll get to advanced drumming!! 😊
How has the machine held up over the years so far? Thinking about getting one of these, I'm tired of using DAWs and need something more portable and need it to last. Thanks!
Hi Mike, yes, another hobby of mine! started doing tunes on you tube just before fishing ones, during lockdown 1 now I combine both passions. If you ever want some short tunes for yours let me know, I'm happy to send them . Pm me on soul trader 57 Facebook? don't want a fee, just credits!
Very interesting and informative! I've had one of these for a couple of years. Tend to just use it for live recording band rehearsals and use the excellent Boss JS-10 eBand for playing at home. Never ventured into the MTR part of the BR-80...always been a bit daunted by it...but your videos are making it appear much easier than I imagined, so might have a go. Subscribed!
Been looking at getting one of these for a while now. I still have a BOSS BR 8 from 21 years ago. It still works but records onto zip disk which do not hold a lot of data when multi tracking. I absolutely hate DAW programs for the computer. So confusing and frustrating. I like simple when trying to get a song idea recorded. Thanks for the video. I might just get one.
Hi. I have a Micro BR and a BR-800. I found the same as you - that all the built-in rhythms are in 4/4 time and all a bit too complicated and manic. However, I have been creating rhythm patterns on the BR-800 Rhythm Editor software. I made a few RUclips videos about this. Do you know if you can use USB for backup/restore on the BR-80, and if so what files are there? Wondering if if might be possible to edit rhythm files for BR-80 as well as BR-800.
I'm afraid you've stumped me there! I haven't really used the USB facility, and I've never quite got around to looking at downloading drum patterns. For my purposes 4/4 is fine for the rock/soul/pop I tend to be involved in. However, the option to use 7/4 etc sometimes would be attractive, for jazz etc. I did do something that involved a change of pattern mid way through a beat, and managed that by using a fill at double speed, ie the verse pattern at 70 tempo and the fill at 140, if that makes sense! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on that one!
@@davidprocter1585 Hi David. I just downloaded the user manual for the BR-80. You can save files to your computer using USB. (Page 108) However it dos not tell me the names of the files in the ROLAND/BR0 folder. On the BR-800 the rhythm files are ARRANGE2.BR0, PATTERN.BR0, and DRUMKIT.BR0. On the Micro BR the complete rhythm arrangement is in one file called ARRANGE3.BR0. What I have discovered is that it is possible to save rhythms to the computer, and then restore them into a different song on the BR-800. Just curious to find out if the BR-800 rhythm files might also work on a BR-80.
@@Jackdogdude Hi Jack. I think it will be the same as the BR-800. If so, in the inbuilt rhythm patterns you have metronome beats in all kinds of time. BUT every standard built-in drumming pattern will be in 4 beats per measure. If it is basically the same as the BR-800 for rhythm, then you can create your own rhythm patterns. Or, you could download some in 3/4 or 6/8. I can help if you wish.
Thank you for this. I have been looking at this unit. It just seems like an older unit and I wonder what is available with todays technology? Sounds good what you've done. I learned a lot.
Thanks for that, John. As far as I'm aware, this is still the latest issue, I've had mine for about 4 years. I also still have its predecessor, the micro 4 track, which is older tech, but still a brilliant tool which I still use (my completed backing tracks in mp3 are stored on sd cards and I use the old one for live performances, as it's push button operation and more idiot proof than a tablet!). Good luck
mine arrived yesterday. it's great! I'm low tech , but immediately having bass and drums and multi tracks is enough. I don't do PCs so it's perfect for me.
@@davidprocter1585 I am actually surprised Boss have not come up with a newer version with maybe a modern interface. I think the 2nd model came out around 2011/12. But the quality of recordings is unbelievable !
Hi again. Been playing around with the drum patterns and once it sunk in, as you say, it's pretty straight forward. Although, l have found a chunk in its armour (unless I'm missing something). I wanted to incorporate more than one tempo in the same song and it wouldn't let me do it. It seems, whatever tempo you settle for at the start of the song, you're stuck with and it won't allow any tempo change. The only way I can see to work round it is by recording the separate tempo pieces as different song projects and importing one section to the other. Not very intuitive. That said, l still love the device!
Cheers Andy, you can change the tempo for each section of your drum pattern, as you add the new section, look at the 4 options (type- break, fill etc, pattern - the particular one you select, length - the number of beats, and tempo- the speed of the song. If you start with a certain tempo and don't change it, all subsequent patterns will remain in that tempo as default. But you can change it for each pattern throughout the song if you so wish! I discovered this by accident when I gave myself a count in (country 1 intro, 1 bar) to start a song (helps timing when you're using it as a live backing track) I set the tempo for the verse and found the count in threw me as it was different. Since then I've speeded up some pacey rock songs towards the end, as a live band tends to do in all the excitement! (maybe I've had some rubbish drummers 😂😂) I think you can do composite patterns too by bouncing the 1st pattern onto a track, then changing the pattern and playing it parallel. I've done that with the micro br. Obviously it restricts editing options once you start bouncing! Hope this helps.
@@davidprocter1585 Hi again David, thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll give it another go. When I tried before, l would for instance set an intro and verse but when I wanted a fill, the option to change the speed/tempo wasn't highlighted and l couldn't put in a value. I wasn't sure whether it was me or the machine. I'll try again and let you know how l get on. Thanks again. Andy
