10 tips to get the best from your winter fishing! UK coarse angling
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.14 дней назад
Many anglers (especially those clocking up a few years!) pack away their rods at the end of October, with a plan to start fishing again in April or May. But improvements in outdoor clothing and generally milder winters mean we can enjoy our sport through 12 months of the year if we wish! I personally draw the line at below freezing temperatures, and unless its fairly mild, only fish for short p...

This time I thought I'd demonstrate the method used to trot a float in fast moving water with a fixed spool reel. A chilly overcast gloomy day on the local river, but a nice result in the end. Thanks for watching! 👍

How to float fish on a small stream -Trotting with a centrepin reel

Very little time for angling at the moment! So this is a stolen hour on my lovely little local stream. The stock here is dominated by wild brown trout (a nice problem to have!) so "trout dodging" is a major part of the game. Added to this, coarse fish are only present in small pockets where they can cope with the savage winter flow regime, so any result is a worthy one! Hopefully I can demonstr...
Autumn Grayling Fishing with a dry fly

A nice, settled, but cold spell in October gave me a nice opportunity to extend my dry fly season and try for those most contrary ladies of the stream! River at a nice level and and extra layer of clothing employed! A very special time! note : comments will be held for approval, any relating to the location of these waters will not be displayed. Hope you like this!
Glorious end to trout season 24!

Just a chilled out session on my local stream, with no great expectations, simply making the most of the precious few hours! September is never quite as good as May or June here, especially without significant water. So any result is good! Nice to get a visit from my pal Dave too. Hope you enjoy this!

spate river trout and sea trout fishing in wild northern waters
Просмотров 5744 месяца назад
A few sessions chasing the elusive Sea trout in our lovely Northern rivers, in the 2nd part of August and the 1st part of September. Usually I'll have an hour or so with a dry fly for the browns too. So nice to be out on these dramatic water ways, surging with flood water one day and running low a few days later. Dry fly, wet fly and streamers used. Hope you enjoy this video👍

Thanks for inviting me on this great fishing trip. Beautiful trout.👏
Many thanks, sir! These are grayling, however, not trout. For that pleasure we have to wait a few weeks here in UK 😂 👍
Thymallus can indeed be a fickle mistress. Nice video! Love the Gilmouresque guitar tone 👍
Very informative & a delightful piece of work.
Really good stuff indeed.
Thank you for the great fishing video. I'm a Japanese angler. If you don't mind, let's be friends.🤝
Thanks for a very complimentary comment, my friend! I'm lucky to have that place so close to my home! Tight lines! 😊👍👍
If you hold Stop and click rewind, you go straight to the beginning
Superb. Can’t wait for the spring to get back on it myself. Thanks for this Dave.
Won't be long now, days are slowly lengthening! 👍
Nice one Dave and yes really need a bit of warmer weather and some sunshine, was supposed to be nice today and river finally down but it stayed overcast and cold so back on the fly tying near the log burner lol.
Yes! I may have been foolish to go out for grayling yesterday in 2 degrees, but the beautiful river Calder graced me with a couple of hard fighting grayling reinforcing my confidence in a couple of recently discovered swims! At least there's a bit more daylight now! 😊👍
Not long to go now!
Just 5 months! Tbh I enjoy the continuous change of venues, species, tackle, methods, and even clothing layering through the year! Gotta make the most of chub, grayling, pike dace and of course Roach before mid March. 👍
Nice recap there Dave on the trials and tribulations of fly fishing. Look forward to the grayling to come.
Very soon, mate, hopefully today! 😊👍
I must try using streamers at the start of the season, only ever used them on still water, thanks for cheering us up a little Dave.
Hi Davie, look forward to seeing that next spring! on small stream, it's best at dusk and dawn (or in the dark!) If the waters clear. Best of all with some colour and heavier water. Its very hard work, as on wee rivers, you're fishing upstream and stripping back faster than the current. On one of those clips, my pal was watching, and I made contact with one of about 2lb. I knew he was in there because I caught him on a spinner in flood conditions 3 years ago. There's a deep hole on the far side of the current (6ft), and I think he sits in there, probably living mostly on smaller trout and perch fry 😊👍
OMG a classic Rimfly reel, I have not seen one of those for some time. Tight lines.
Yes! I've loads of 'em ! All you need, really, usually come with a line, too (tackle fairs and jumble sales) which may or may not be any good 😂👍
Always good to get out and cast a line - just being out feels good. If we wait around for 'nice' weather we'll not be getting much fishing done especially in these more northern parts.
You got that right, my friend! Waiting for the right weather, water level, not too cold or hot, moderate tide, not neep or spring etc etc and months whizz by 😂👍
Bloody hell Shakespeare alpha match, that's a blast from the past, one up from omni if memory serves me reyt.
Yes! It was my late dad's! I bought it for him in the 1980s as a birthday present. After he died, I inherited it. It's had rings re whipped and 2 weeks ago I broke the tip, but it seems fine with the repair! 😊 This type of "match" rod is a rare beast these days unless you're happy to pay big bucks
Fished a similar sized river myself a lot recently. Static baits attract a fraction of the bites, even the barbel like a freelined bait more than one hard on the deck. The only spate stream near me is all trout, so out of bounds much of the year. It only becomes a mixed fishery miles down stream, with a more urban flavour and not very Crabtree among police sirens and drum and bass tracks.
I'm in a fairly urban area myself, but that river is just on the edge of town running through a green corridor! That's why there's often a background of traffic noise on my vids! But there's only a few pools hold coarse fish. It's very fast flowing and best suited as a trout stream. I suspect the roach and perch come into the river as eggs or ova via the canal overflow. Strangely the lower reaches where it's deeper and slower are very disappointing for coarse fish! 👍
@@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 It's the other way round here, with trout getting into the canal. One or two have gone double figures. I got smashed up by a big one after playing it for ages a few years back. Nobody targets them as far as I know, it's needle in a haystack business. You'd have to have spinning tackle to be in with a shout.
Happy New Year 🐟🎣
Godd session for those spots. Thats the slack i fished a few weeks ago. Definitely holds a couple roach also.
Great minds ! 😂
Nice one Dave, nlovely day out by the looks of things!
OK sesh! Favourite bit was getting the feeling back into my feet! 😂
You had good session there Dave and a nice informative video. Mr Crabtree, first read the book from my local library (I now have the modern copy by John Baily), very hard pressed to find any fishing book in the library now.
Not been in a library for some time! I like the old school writers though, painting pictures with words! 😊
I did actually meet Mr Crabtree (Bernard Venables) once many years ago
Wow! That's impressive! I loved those books, but never seemed to enjoy quite the same success as Mr Crabtree! I loved the Jack Hargreaves "out of town" too
Super video once again Dave! Tempted to brave the cold myself now for a few casts.
Excellent
Yep... Safer than yanking it!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR Soul Brother...Love the Song..Hope you have an Awesome New Year my friend..Just catching up with everybody..Boxing Day feels like a Sunday so I thought why not check in with the crew..Have a good one Bro...
Same to you, thanks ever so, Gaz! Getting very crowded in the fishing utube scene now, so next year will see a slightly different direction, more instruction and education, and maybe more music items! Or even a dedicated music channel?? All great fun 😁 good luck 👍👍👍
@@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 Sounds Good Brother, will look forward to the new Direction..Good luck for the New Year My Friend..Hope it goes well for ya...
Glad to have found this channel.. love the fishing and the music. A man after my own heart.. loving the waters and the beautiful wild trout and grayling and all the rest..topped off with some proper soul sounds. Fantastic, gentle entertainment for a long winter evening.
That's got to be my top comment this year! Exactly what I've been trying to achieve! There's old and disabled folks who just can't get out anymore, and the next best thing for them is watching angling on utube! Makes it worth the effort! All the best and thanks again 😊😊
Nice to watch the highlights of your catches from this year. Looking forward to watching more of your adventures next year. All the best, take care and Tight lines.
Thanks fella! Greatly appreciated! Good luck with your channel and all the best 😊
Merry christmas, Dave , another great vid/song
Cheers, Colin! All the best, and hoping you're happy in the new place, mate!😊
Top channel and top bloke, all the best mate!
Wow, thanks, Joel! Where should I leave the £50? 😂 Doing my best, but there's still a big hole in the utube menu while Albion Angling are on a pilot light!😂 hope to get out soon with you, my friend! Look after that family! 👍👍👍
THANK YOU, DAVE!! Plenty of fishing videos on RUclips but my favourites by far are from your good self and Chris Matthews. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you🎣
Cheers, Davie! Likewise looking forward to seeing the Lothrie burn again! Feel like I know those pools well! 😂 yes, Chris is good and is also something of a dry fly obsessive. I talked him into doing some fishing in Devon, but I'm not certain he filmed it. Soon be meeting up with another trout season! 😊 👍
@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 The Wonderful Lothrie, pining for it! A song perhaps?😎 Google maps has brought more burns to my attention, can't wait
Merry Christmas to you I have enjoyed all your videos this year especially since a lot of them are also very local to myself. Hope to see you down the river at some point on 2025
Thanks, Christian! I've found a new coarse fish pool on our local river today, some nice roach and perch there. Chat soon, all the best! 😊
@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 nice one excited to here about it.
Thanks for all the uploads this season Dave, looking forward to 2025. Marry Christmas.
Don't mention it! My pleasure dear chap! Hopefully more to come as I'm working less next year. 😊
Ho, Ho, Ho! Nice one David and All The Best to You and hope you have great Christmas and plenty of wobbly lines in the New Year.
Cheers, fella! Tough to get a wobble on the line now it's colder! All the best 😊
Lovely stuff.
Thanks mate, all the best 👍 😊
A nice bit of fishing, I enjoyed your video.
Much appreciated, Peter! Not unlike your river Blackwater??👍
Niceone
Great advice there Dave, absolutely fantastic mate, hope you are well 🎣
Thanks, Michael! Yes, all good! Hope alls well with you too! 👍
Another lovely video - I fish my local little rivers with a Darent Valley 8’ Specialist Quiver rod that has 2 tips, one of which has stand off rings for light float fishing and the other for bomb/feeder. I’ve lost count of the number of sessions it’s done this last year and how many fish it’s accounted for. Had chub to 5lb on it too.
Cheers Karl! I ought to use that one a bit more often, reckon it would be OK for dropshot too 👍👍
@ - use mine a lot down in Brixham when we visit friends, LRF & dropshot for mini’s along the breakwater then getting mugged off by big wrasse 😂 You’ve got to give it a go.
Very helpful, thanks and a lovely video to watch over lunch.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully more little quaint spots to come ! 👍
that looked a most enjoyable trip indeed dave, trotting a worm is one of the ultimate joys in angling, tight work as always pal 👍👍
Yes! Thanks, a great pleasure. few and far between where perch are found on here, one day I might do a roving winter perch one including under the bridges on the canal. It would suit roving on a pushbike over several miles of watercourse 👍👍
I wonder if the smaller sizes of free spool reel (2500 and similar) might work for trotting? Turning line off the spool with the thumb, and engaging retrieve with the handle. Regarding the rod, there's a lack of short float rods for small rivers. An all-rounder 10ft float/quiver is okay if the rings stand off sufficiently, and should there be bigger chub, perch or trout around, a pellet waggler rod is pretty much perfect for the job.
Yes, no reason why that wouldn't work? Tbh that rod was very cheap from a used tackle fair, I've an idea it may be a Liddle one 😂! It's 10ft with 2 tops, a float one and quiver with interchangeable tips. I bought it for thr very rare occasions that I might be fishing with small feeders or bombs. But really prefer the centre pin when given the choice 👍
@@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 Good stuff. Lidl for the win!
Nice one, David. I keep meaning to try this on the clubs lower Creedy beat, just a bit worried I might end up catching only trout, which seems to be the dominant species. How do I find you on Facebook?
Yes, thanks Chris! I've ruled out 99% of my local river in winter as it's depressing finding a succession of lean, OSS trout in every pool you try. Calder and lower ribble seem more grayling baised. Hopefully more time next year will be spent to explore them! There's a soul trader 57 Facebook page and David Procter, take your pick! I keep saying I'll put blogs out on the St. one, but I've only got around to doing 1 😂 I'd suggest investing in a centrepin for trotting though, much more satisfying than using a fixed spool reel. Chub and roach in some of those SW rivers too ? Exe, Culm etc??
@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 yes Chub and Dace/Roach in the Exe and Culm system (Chub are not native to the SW and were introduced years ago, not to everybody's liking I must admit). Our problem is any drop of rain and the rivers colour up. I suppose you could still target Chub, which bait would you try in dirty water? Luncheon meat?
Great video, your explanations of your tactics was most appreciated, thank you and keep them coming.
Thanks Nicholas much appreciated 👍
Another great video planning another session myself soon at the spot I was speaking to you about where I caught the Dace.
Thanks, Christian! Good luck with that, my man!😊
Some days I enjoy having a natter with passers by but other times I just want to be in my own little world. I just pick a venue according to how I feel. Thanks for sharing the video and encouraging juniors to take up angling.
yes! strangely addictive! though I think normally I'd appreciate some P n Q 👍👍
Future anglers for sure Dave, nice one👍
Hopefully mate! we need new anglers coming through, or the sport will collapse eventually! 👍👍
I can confirm the pleasure to be had fishing in very public places. I've lure fished the Regents Canal in the heart of London from Camden Lock through to Kings Cross where there was conversation after conversation with members of the public. Recommended (if you're gregarious, that is).
Yes sir! I surprised myself here! I don't think it bothers the fish at all, especially in coloured water like this. Regent's canal must be rammed with traffic!! 🤣👍👍
Great video, keeep up the wonderful work! Always enjoy them.
thankyou so much! still editing the "big" version of this, Roach in Stillwater through Autumn!👍👍 take care!
