  • Homer was regarded as "the teacher of all Hellas" (Greece). And his two epics were encyclopedic in their scope, so while they focussed on a central hero, they also taught us about human life, as well as about the nature of the gods, the afterlife, and concomitant with those things, what constitutes a good life.
When we are engaging with the genre of the epic, we thus need to consider not only the literary features of the genre, but also the character and substance of the education. And this is a very important consideration, because Greek culture is foundational for the development of the Western mind. So what is the character of its education?
Education for Homer is, just as it is the Bible, training in wisdom and virtue.
While I would argue it ought to remain so, that is not the view of education found among today's educators.
