This song is definitely in my Top Ten Dave Stamey songs (and I have his flash drive w/ 197 "tracks," to use an old term). I ride Western, and many of my friends have kept the Californio traditions (I've only got the hat), so this true story of horsemanship in a song touches my heart. "Some fine reining horses as ever were made."
That's how I felt when I first found him too. Great feeling with his amazing music. My weekend doesn't start till I've heard some of his songs! LOL He puts modern country music to absolute shame!
My Uncle Hip had a brown mare he bought from him and she could spin. I saw Dave in Elko in a special at pioneer hotel. Got to talk to him after the set. he’s a great talent
I wish I could hear more recordings of what he says at his shows! Very insightful into the songs. I wish I could get to a concert of his, but they're too far from me.
at his concerts (many of which have been video'd) all his songs come with backstories and stage patter--he loves to poke fun at himself--and his understated wit is fueled by lifelong Ranching/Packing experience. He writes about what he does and loves, and is all the more captivating for it. He's a kind and humble man--just the sort you might wish for as a friend & neighbor.
