- This is the third in a new series of videos to revisit previous hardware builds to see how they are doing and what, if anything, could be improved on.
Today we are looking at a Computer built to be a NAS in 2016.
I don't work for, nor am I paid or sponsored by, any company or product mentioned in this video, I'm just a fan of their products.

Wow, when you say custom. . you meant it. I have a similar, but 4x U.2 SSD and 12x SATA SSD (just like you, dual 6x icydocks) unit about the same size. I use a PEX 8724 HBA card in the 16x slot, 6x sata off the MB, 6 more off a PCIe SATA card in the 4x slot. I use an M.2 to 4x PCIe adapter card for a 10gbe nic all packed up in a silverstone SG02-F case. It had two 5.25" front drive bays for optical disks that were perfect for the icydocs. I have the advantage of just building this ~8 months ago. It's pretty awesome that you built your own case.
Thank you, your rig sounds impressive too. The Icy Docks range of cages are really good for these type of builds, packing so many SSDs or hard drives in a limited space.
looks cool, how about total system power consumption on idle and under load?
Each of the 12 drives do draw 1.8 watts when they spin up, so thats around 22 watts maximum for the drives alone and around 6 watts in total on idle. I'll need to do some measurements for the whole system when my new power meter arrives.
@@custompchardware that sounds quite impressive. Since running a system, besides build cost, it also comes with added energy costs, if I may suggest, I would post power consumption on idle in general when discussing builds, as it adds up over time, and most machines are idle 99%-ish of the time. It would also be very interesting to test idle consumption cost when using SSDs. At 2TB they should be about the same price point.
In the UK 2.5 SSDs are selling for around £100 and the HDDs I use come in at £70, so there is still a bit of a difference, but the margin is narrowing. I'll look to add these stats to future videos.
