    I imagine for most Americans the bigger surprise would be an election suddenly just six weeks away. Theirs is still more than five months away and feels like it's been going for 12 years already

      That's the thing about parliaments. Over here in India our general election is being conducted in seven different phases over two months and the election was called like a month before that but it's still far less time than the nearly two years that candidates in the US spend on campaigning for their party's nomination and then the presidency.

      i think if you're an American who cares enough to listen to British politics, you understand that part about the parliamentary system. I'm a New Yorker sitting here in Scotland at the moment, realizing the BRITISH Prime Minister could have called the election for ANY day until the end of the year and he decided to do the 4th of July??? He's not a stupid man, surely he understands the symbolism of that day? Is he accepting defeat? I know I shouldn't be surprised by now of the surreal times we live in, inside a political cartoonist's head, but it's still at least head scratching.

    Liz is a journalist who’s researched the subject and I’m just a layperson who worked in council housing maintenance briefly but I don’t agree with her about council housing, maybe the cost is high but so are the advantages to society Liz sights NIMBYISM as the main problem.
    Imo the problem is equally if not more INEMBY’s which is ‘it’s not even my back yard’- because the number of unused, second homes, hollowing out our communities, along with abandoned or derelict homes and buildings, unused investment properties etc there are over a million properties.
    The MPs have 2nd homes, but-to-lets and own or rent in London funded by tax payers.
    Look at Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and other areas of natural beauty, so many holiday lets and unoccupied properties.
    Also Greens say they will build 150,000 council homes a year. Tories said they’d build more but never have and Labour plan to get private contractors to build them, which will just be more privatisation and profiteering from us.
    So I think the focus on NIMBYs and planning permission is a little strong when there are other factors at play which could be more immediate fixes- Like filling Britain’s empty homes.

    • @BeccaAl
      @BeccaAl 5 месяцев назад +3

      @richard.3340 I appreciate NIMBYism and planning restrictions are real and contribute to lack of new housing being built.
      However, there are over 1 million empty homes, some of which could be filled next week.
      Councils need more funding to buy back unused homes, abandoned housing in disrepair at low rates through compulsory purchase orders.
      The law needs charging and those using property in this country for tax evasion and money laundering also need to have those homes reclaimed as the proceeds of crime.
      Theres a plethora of factors including all these and more which is why imo blaming NIMBYs as the main culprit just pushes the problem on, it doesn’t tackle it.

    • @BeccaAl
      @BeccaAl 5 месяцев назад +4

      @richard.3340I don’t agree. Housing is a human right.
      I don’t agree that some people have legitimate ownership of properties as described.
      Building new, quality homes on brown fields sites isn’t as simple as not accepting objections from local residents.
      They need utilities, infrastructure, public services, public transport, solid uncontaminated land, planning, construction including fully trained construction workers.
      There are 3 homes within 1/2 mile of mine that are completely unoccupied & falling into disrepair.
      It would take 6 months at most to buy them up, fix them up, training apprentices throughout and use them for social housing.
      There was a scheme to encourage this 10 years ago, fronted by George Clarke and there are still campaigns to fill Britain’s empty homes.
      Seems you’d prefer to have derelict houses as a blight on local communities rather than let the NIMBYs keep their view of disused petrol stations and garages, warehouses, disused industrial estates- Because that’s what brownfield sites are.
      No one is suggesting concreting the countryside…yet!

    • @BeccaAl
      @BeccaAl 5 месяцев назад +2

      @richard.3340 Also this legal action already exist.
      The CPS can recover property as the proceeds of crime.
      Compulsory purchase orders are already a legal tool used by some orgs and councils to acquire land and properly in order to support redevelopment.

    • @BeccaAl
      @BeccaAl 5 месяцев назад +2

      @richard.3340 suggest that to the criminals then Richard. Then when the CPS try and seize their homes they can say “that’s not a legal problem, it’s my housing” and keep their unused properties to lay empty.
      No, obviously you ‘have no skin in the game’.
      Ofc I don’t agree with you isn’t some magic law changing sentence! It’s another way of saying, you’re wrong/ you don’t know what you’re talking about.
      But instead I humoured your reply bc I thought you actually wanted to have a chat about something you cared or knew about. Neither is the case.
      I have worked in housing and housing is one of my areas of interest.
      If you wanted to have a discussion about it with me, you needed to actually read my replies written to you and rather than skimming and wrongly making assumptions.

    • @BeccaAl
      @BeccaAl 5 месяцев назад +2

      @richard.3340 not an attack Richard. But again I go back to- I don’t agree.
      If all the NIMBYS disappeared there still would not be any new housing built on brownfields for a good long while if ever.
      We have an unused resource of over 1 million homes sat empty right now.
      It’s not about being on my side Richard, I don’t care. But you’re wasting my time replying to my og comment about something you don’t know about, that’s not a game to me. Having worked in social housing I know how serious this is to people.
      I do know a bit more about it yet you’re still trying to instruct me how to phrase my points, to reread your comments I already read which is how I know you’re no expert.
      I’ve corrected you a couple of times about things you didn’t know. Let’s leave it there ey, you used enough of my time. Ta.

Today's criticism, which feels like the most they've gone in on a guest so far (not something I'm against at all!), isn't backed by the research. Landlordism and no council housing is the centre of people having access to a human right, not not having more countryside properties.

    From a northern perspective NIMBY's are frustrating. The north relies heavily on actual industry and building. Therefore more people living up here would be a massive positve.
    Although i'm not sure big house builders are the solution to housing issues. They're shit and causing issues with poor quality and expense.
    I'm hopefully buying my first house in the next couple of years and all the new builds are too big and too expensive to consider. I want a small 2 bed house. Theres only me and only ever will be potentially me and a partner in the future.

    I’m sorry but nimbyism isn’t my experience in south east kent- LOADS of development into previously green spaces. Lots of lego towns built where there was woodland and green. And not an affordable house in sight. Just a load of second homes. This is a huge problem from my anecdotal perspective

    *sigh* man I love the greens. I get so used to hearing at least one thing said that makes me want to cry every time I hear a politician speak, the total absence of horrible dogwhistles is such a strange feeling it’s like a warm hug for my ears. I don’t think I’m ever going to give any political party the benefit of the doubt for any reason but the absence of open hostility from the greens has been a nice break from the rest of the political system, for however long it lasts

    I actually disagree. I don't think its nimbyism. Yes Council Housing is expensive, but not providing any means we increase our problems... including the rising costs of the houses around them.
    More houses isn't going to mend a broken system. We have plenty of houses, just too many landlords, price of land thats too high and mortgages that are impossible to get.
    I really hesitate to just cut red tape for a construction industry which has proven how much it DOES NOT CARE about safety!!

      american's think about the american war of independence (ungrateful rebellion!) about a million times more than british people. Even at the time the British didn't really think it was a big deal, e.g the financial value of the carribean colonies at the time was 4 x that of the 13 colonies. Both were a drop in the ocean compared to India, which the British were terrified the Russians would try to take from them (if they had the British couldn't really defend it).

      @chriselliott726 there's already some worrying signs. Labour are asserting they won't raise taxes (outside of the very specific and narrow private schools and non-doms, which aren't big-money changes). They want to invest. They won't borrow
      It all comes down to often repeated promises of growth, but to fix the country while not raising any more taxes, that growth is going to have to be unprecedented
      I have learned to be cautious around people who bet their entire plan on unlikely odds occurring. I see hard times and deep disappointments ahead 🙁

    Labour might be that desperate they sign a load of PFI type things but that will only make things MUCH worse in the long term. To revive the UK Labour have to abolish private landlords over 10 years, do away with benefits introduce UBI, abolish business rates in favour of UK derived profits tax, nationalise all utilities and nationally important industries - REALLY RADICAL STUFF --->
    Oh and make foreign ownership of media illegal
    THEY WONT

    My problem with looking after the environment is the environment is global, we are only a very small portion of the world (101st in terms of pollution in the world). Even if we went 100% green tomorrow it wont matter as its countries like China are not gonna stop and its even worse in places like the UAE, Egypt and Tunisia. We can stop them polluting and thus why we shouldn't invest so damn much. HOWEVER that being said I feel all low income housing and people on benefits should get free solar panels. This would lower our pollution and need for power from places like Russia and help those with less money to earn bit more and get themselves on their feet. It would help with poverty too saving ppl around £150-£200 a month.
