Majoras Mask truly is a game about HEALING more than anything. All Link does in this game is work to ease the pain of everyone in Termina around him. To me that's what makes the game stand as a legend among most video games period. It really is a masterpiece in art
I copied the entire soundtrack for my mom to hear on her computer. She called me up from work after hearing this song and said she cried so hard while listening to it. She had no idea what the story behind this song was about. I told her and she started tearing up again. It goes to show you not only is Theophany good with telling a specific story with the music created. But also can capture pure raw human emotion. Not many musicians can do that. I applaud this person for making that accomplishment. Keep up the good work. :)
I really appreciate that Theophany dedicated a song to Kafei and Anju, my favorite video game couple. I've heard it argued that their story is hackneyed -- a couple separated by forces beyond their control, finally united shortly before the end of their time -- and perhaps there is merit to this. "Romeo and Juliet did it better." "The myth of Orpheus did it first." Etc. Regardless, the Majora's Mask experience was something stark, indescribably frustrating and sad, and beautiful. I have three days before the world ends. What can I do? What should I do? Can I save anyone? Anything? If you, the gamer, chose to work to unite Kafei and Anju over those three days, you also chose to disregard all other stories, paths, and people. The decisions made, the paths not taken, the others ignored -- could you justify it? Was it worth it, in the final moments of the third night, to see them together? To me, it was, but these sorts of unsettling questions are what I recall about the experience of Majora's Mask most vividly some twelve years later. I've yet to see any game stick with me like that.
YES. Majora’s Mask really turns the “hero” story of The Legend of Zelda on its head. This game forces you to encounter people that even the almighty Hero of Time can’t save. All you can do is continually watch others suffer over and over again until you get that mask back. But even then, three people are inevitably dead
Can you imagine how sad Anju and Kafei must be? Finally reuniting after being separated for so long and realizing the life you wanted to spend with the person you love, the good and bad times, the ups and downs, the trips together and the painful time apart, all reduced to a few bleak hours before the end of the world. Theophany achieved that exact mood with this masterpiece.
And then... 6:00 comes The moon is gone The world is still here They have survived And even better His curse is lifted Time to greet the morning together!
This is pretty emotional if you really imagine being in either Anju or Kafei's shoes: Finally seeing the one you want to spend the rest of your life with but sadly knowing that only means a short moment. At the end it sounds like screams! So heart tugging!
Around 5:40 you can hear muffled screams in the background.. (I request wearing headphones so you can hear it better) that part always gets me.. I started to silently cry during school when that part played.
I think it is the cries of despair and fear, of the end, the cries that will ever hear him, it is the most painful cries to hear, the depressive cries in demand for help but to no avail. That's what it means to me.
This actually made me cry. And I don’t usually cry at scores like this. I’ve never played Majora’s Mask, but this TELLS A STORY. It tells a story of sadness, and of fear, but it also tells one of love.
This makes me feel things. Things no other piece of music has ever made me feel again. I keep coming back to this since nearly 8 years now and can't stop. This is too beautiful.
I'd be willing to play this at my wedding. I could also imagine a slightly more "acoustic" style version of this that would play better over speakers in the background (lots of the pretty auditory details here would be lost unless you crank up the volume and scare your guests.)
It kinda makes me want to cry, ever since I was introduced to the first game I've been a huge fan ever since. The music is so amazing and brilliant that this is the only game series that I've been passionate towards and it makes me so happy to of played every single game so far, I really love this video game series.
It’s poetic that generation after generation can learn to love these games, in a different way, but similar. Just as how the world of Hyrule changes as well.
The Anju and Kafei storyline in Majora's Mask has been so overlooked, I have yet to have even heard someone say anything about it when talking about the game itself. This song captures the pure, raw emotion of the two's loving embrace as they're left in the dark room, not worrying about the end of the world, because they're finally together. The fact that you had the idea to dedicate a full symphony to this relatively small part of the game has me in tears. Thank you, Theophany. Thank you.
I just replayed this game because they released it on the 3ds and I just did that quest. Being older, new things struck me about it. For instance the relationship between the curiosity shop owner and Kafei, who knew he could trust him despite his transformation. However what really punched me in the guts this time around is this one line from Talt, where she gives her opinion about Kafei. "What?? Are you telling us what to do?!?" [...] "I don't like him... But do we have any choice? Should we help him? He's just like *Tael*... rushing ahead in the face of danger, never thinking of the consequences... ... That's it. We have to help. Let's go!" Doesn't help that he's purple too :') And here's other heartbreaking quotes I noted. "... Tee-hee! They're lovers, but they look just like a mother and child." "Please take refuge. We are fine here. We shall greet the morning together." (Minutes before dying).
I hate that scene so much that the Lover's Mask is always the final mask I get before going to the top of the clock tower. I can't stand, even though it's just a game, that kind of devotion ending prematurely in death.
Pikachu Thirteen It's just there to belittle him even more. If I had been transformed into a child, I would hide to my death from the one I love for fear of scorn and rejection. At least with him in hiding, he could feel he was still loved and missed by Anju, rather than rejected because of his physical form. (I feel like such a ridiculous flamey, neckbeardy, fanboy right now... D:)
Dude Don't feel bad about it, that's how you feel. I at least would have liked to see the curse broken in the game. If that's how you feel, stick to it! :)
This cover tells its story vividly, and it inspires stronger feelings in me than most movies do. The slightly loose timing of the arrangement, a bit chaotic at times, the choice percussion, they all scream the desperate urgency of keeping a promise at the end of the world. The bells at the end always wreck me, especially - bells as a warning call for the impending destruction, bells for the reunited lovers. And it's built on a foundation of Zelda's Lullaby??! Your skills have always been amazing.
Please nintendo, PLEASE hire this man. Someone, start a petition. Do something, tell people. This is such a moving piece, and the fact that so few people have heard of it outside of the internet makes me feel sad for humanity. We have Icona pop and Lady Gaga getting fame...yet the true beauty lies here, in the simple yet emotionally rending pieces made by dedicated people like Theophany.
***** I find it kind of odd you chose to use Lady Gaga as your example of people who are getting fame but shouldn't be (that was your point). Considering she is an INCREDIBLE singer. I don't even like her music, hell, I don't even listen to her genre at all. But please, if you're gonna choose someone for that example, don't pick a great singer, pick someone with absolutely no talent, like Kanye West.
***** Thanks for the alternative recommendation :) I unfortunately had little knowledge of Lady Gaga's singing prowress at the time I wrote this, and was far less versed in powerful music. I probably should have used Icona pop instead as a point of poor musical taste.
Listening to this again, drifting off to sleep, eyes closed and hands behind my head, I completely forgot this was music and got totally wrapped up in the ambience at the end. You've nailed it, my friend. Keep making amazing pieces like this.
I like how he took a piece that has always been a sign of safety and comfort and turned it completely upside down....This reminds me of bad, bad times in my life. And I can't help but be thankful, despite being sad.
This fits perfectly to Zeldas Despair and the last special memory in BOTW. When i have this playing in the background while the memories play... just.. so.. emotionally perfect. So fantastic! So much goosebumbs!!!
My all-time favorite side mission. I completed this over and over again. I can't fathom how much this game stuck to me after all these years. Definitely my most favorite Zelda game, and you, sir, encapsulated almost every fan's passion for such wonderful piece of art.
PLEASE REMAKE THIS GAME! There was no other game from that generation that had the depth that this did, even today we are hard pressed to find games that take you on the emotional journey that this did. It deserves to be played by modern audiences.
I pretty much comment on all of these videos but can we talk about THE AMOUNT OF DETAIL IN THESE SONGS. You can hear the freaking moon come crashing down in the distance towards the end just like in the game before playing the song of time to save yourself. I just.....holy shit THE DETAIL
I love this so much... a lot of re-orchestrated themes seem muddled, and don't emphasize the original theme well... this touches the soul of Zelda's Lullaby and Majora's Mask so well.
That's.... Beautiful... I can't stop crying... When I hear this first time, that makes me fell to think about my life and what should I do to be better person... Thanks for it :')
5:44 or is it whistling. I am still wondering what it is. I found out yesterday that those weird noices where there.. well what it may be it's quite mysterious
God, I love this song. Everything in it is just perfect. But what hit me the most is, if you listen closely during the final minute, you can faintly hear what sounds like the fading scream of a woman and, with a stretch of the imagination, a child. If any of you have played Majora's Mask, you'll know why this hits me the most, and since you usually complete the quest with 5 minutes to spare, it actually kinda fits.
I commend thee with the highest regards, I have not found music that ecompasses the music of such a wonderful series such as I have found now. The first 5 seconds almost had me in tears. That is incredibly powerful and very much a skill.
I feel so stupid! I’ve listened to this god knows how many times and not until I read the description I realized that this is based on Zelda’s Lullaby.... And now that I know it just elevates the song even more. I love it. Please release Time’s End III soon!
A masterpiece. A true fucking masterpiece. This has to be the most inspiring song I ever have been listening to. Things like my familly, girlfriend and all my friends where in mind the whole time. Oh man, I don't know how you could create such a good song without being "famous". You deserve to be recognized across the whole world. Can't find more words bro, thank you. That's all I have to say.
The Zelda theme motif throughout this causes me to imagine a scene in a Majora's Mask movie where Link is reuniting Anju and Kafei on the last day. Their touching reunion causes him to think of Zelda and his love for her, and how he misses her. Link, who is able to communicate telepathically with Zelda even as he is in Termina, decides to do so as Anju and Kafei embrace, and she replies by telling him to hold on, that they'll see each other again one day. Anju kisses Kafei on the forehead (because Kafei is still in a child's body, and it would be awkward and creepy otherwise), and then when they give Link the lover's mask as a thank-you, they beckon him to face the mask in one final showdown and finish his journey and save Termina.
Gorgeous... I always had more love for Anju and Kafei's storyline than the main story. I followed both of them around wherever I could, and saw all the dialogue bits and everything. This hit me right in the feels, good job.
I've been listening to this over and over. I wish there was a one hour version!! I haven't played MM but reading from comments I now know a bit of the story. My favorite Legend of Zelda game is Ocarina of Time and I'd like this composer to make an album consisting of those songs ~ Especially Epona's song. Even when I listen to this song it makes me think of those two characters confessing their love as the world around them end. And perhaps it zooms up on Link and he looks towards the sky and thinks of Zelda, and flashbacks play across the screen of all the times that they met/shared. And as the world ends and things fade to black, the words 'We'll meet again, someday..." go across the screen. And idk about you but the very idea of that makes me have chills! Currently playing Windwaker and I figured the pirate Tetra was Zelda reincarnated just how my character is Link reincarnated and I was right! Legend of Zelda is so good!!!
Breath taking. I could die to this song and be happy with my sorrow. My mom walked in the room while I was blasting this on the sound system. I told her the song was about two lovers finding each other in time to greet the end of the world in a tight embrace. She cried. Theophany, I want you to know that you've been... well. An epiphany. For me and hundreds of others. We wait for your second instalment with eager cheerfulness. I know where I will be on 21/12/13
This song brings up so many emotions and memories. This truly is nostalgia. I love all of these songs, and I can‘t put my joy mixed with sadness in good words. So I‘m just gonna leave this comment here, so if someone likes it, I will be reminded to come back here
Botw Zelda Had All Those She Was In Denial Because Of Her Power She Was Angry At Link For Following Her Everywhere And She Got Frustrated When She Sees The Master Sword She Was Depressed When Her Father Died When The Calamity Struck And Had To Contain Him And Accepted It All In The End She Succeeded And Thanks To Fi Tarreko Warned Them Before It Was Too Late
This song is so heartbreaking and beautiful. It made me cry so much earlier today since it made me think about how wonderfully happy and tragic the end of the Anju and Kafei quest is. Fantastic work. Thanks for sharing this!
This part of the game is one of my favorites. Since I was a kid, it always left me feeling very emotional. And, like you, I feel it is never really given enough credit. I recently replayed the game, after many years. Even though it's one of the hardest and longest sidequests in the game, I kept doing it over and over after beating the game, just because it is such a great and compelling substory. Seriously, games that get me like this one did, and on so many levels, are such a rarity nowadays...
I haven’t seen any content of Majora’s Mask, but this song makes cry every time I listen to it, and I don’t normally cry from music! This song is too powerful for this world! How is this not in an anime?!!!
The name "Lover's Mask" is perfect for this seeing as it brings memories of a lover I had to mind. Heartbreak is a terrible thing, it leaves you feeling empty and alone. Makes you wonder why things end up the way they do and until the reason for things happening is shown you're left with a burning desire for a different outcome. I have truly loved someone and lost her but I wouldn't trade my memories with her for anything...
I can honestly say this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to, and I still can't describe the kinds of emotions that this draws out.
They didn't know when or why but they knew how. That gentle moon that everyone took for granted, keeping the darkness from overwhelming the light, had been corrupted ,just like the child who corrupted it was. They could see it, day after day creeping closer, with that frightening face that showed doom. It would take a miracle to fix it. A walking miracle with a legendary sword, a loyal horse, and the force of courage. Imagine this game made in this generation. Crazy
I was writing my Zelda fanfiction(it's called Invincible and I promise it's not cheesy) and this song came on my playlist. I literally started crying because it was while Link was riding away from his home villlage on the back of Epona during a storm, and between the music and even the storm sounds in the background, it was so fitting.
This is such an incredible album... it's completely seamless. You lose yourself in one song and you forget if it changes to another song or not. Of course I IMMEDIATELY recognized the Clocktown one... beautiful. Just the whole album is beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. Anyone else getting a really heavy Clint Mansell vibe from this? The piano and the outro really remind me of the Moon OST and Leaving Earth from the ME3 OST. Awesome album Theophany, great job!
This remix was the first song to ever make me cry. I've cried during music before, but that wasn't BECAUSE of the music. This song is so heartbreaking to me that I can't not choke up. It gives me chills, it makes me think about the times in my life when I really didn't want to be alive, but more than either of those, it makes me think about despite losing as much as I had, I'm still here. The song has a strangely empowering bend to it, and I've completely fallen in love with it :)
This really hits me with nostalgia hard. The Couple's Mask was the last one I got before fighting Majora. It really drove home a strong message; Even when the world is ending and everything is going to hell, hope and love can still survive and find a way.
This song just makes me break down and brings up all the memories of heartbreak I've ever had.... But it is so damn beautiful it is a wonderful tragedy
This is one of my favorite tracks from the album - and I never thought I'd be saying that about Zelda's Lullaby on a Majora's Mask album! But the flavor of Majora's Mask just flows right out of this piece with such beauty. The underlying Giant's Theme is so haunting. I listen for those chords every time I hear this. Fantastic combination of themes.
Music is my life and never have i heard such beautiful songs. The game ad the songs are both amazing and interesting. I love the album. So beautiful, so powerful, so calming. I love it so much.
When listening to this song, I like to think that Link and Zelda are confessing their love for one another while the world crashes down around them. Amazing work.
Crichjo32 Or things that the Hero's Shade feels as he watches the Link from Twilight Princess adventure while thinking of his own Princess Zelda from OoT/MM.
I don't know what is the context of this wonderful music but it's very emotional, it's incredible that a musician can share emotions like this. Thank you.
For some reason, the piano from 0:37 reminds me a bit of Amelie's soundtrack... there is something in its rhythm that is so bittersweet...This piece is incredibly beautiful.
This is the best fan-made remix album I have ever heard, and we've only been able to listen to half of it. I haven't been moved by a soundtrack this much since Journey's soundtrack.
This IS the Best remix of any Zelda related song i have ever heard, plus the title "Lover's Mask" brings me back to the Kafei and Anju Quest. this song sums up the emotion in that quest, a man turned into a boy that even near the end wants to get his mask back. But in all the scenarios that that quest could have ended, kafei walking into the hotel room, minutes before the end,No Anju, that scenario, A mans final chance to show his love for a woman in the worlds last moments...gone.
Instead of Anju and Kafei, I was imagining that this song was about me and my wife. This brought tears to my eyes and made me realize how much I love and appreciate her. This song is a masterpiece!
‘I think it’s great that we are able to incorporate melodies into our daily lives. It adds a sense of immersion and grandiosity to how it relates to you personally. It’s what Koji Kondo would want and it’s beautiful. I hope you and your wife are doing great.’ -Sincerely, some guy on the internet.
this song is... is... i cant describe the feeling I get when listening to this ! Great work ! If only Nintendo could incorporate this song in their next game.

Anju and Kafei's story is so beautiful. So is this song.

In the end, they were together.

I've listened to this song for about 2 years now and I'm only just now hearing the muffled screaming in the background towards the end. Haunting.
5:44 or is it whistling. I am still wondering what it is. I found out yesterday that those weird noices where there.. well what it may be it's quite mysterious
This part of the game made me cry.
Me too ;-;
God, I love this song.
This is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
From the first day I heard this to now, it still gives me chills
I keep listening to this over and over. It's so gorgeous, omfg.
So I‘m just gonna leave this comment here, so if someone likes it, I will be reminded to come back here
This is perfection. Thank you for making this. It's one of the most wonderful sounds and remixes I heard so far !

Best piece of music I have ever heard in my life. I already know now that I will listen to it for the rest of my life from time to time.
I literally started crying because it was while Link was riding away from his home villlage on the back of Epona during a storm, and between the music and even the storm sounds in the background, it was so fitting.
put this on with rainy mood....sounds amazing!
Even just by listening to the first minute or so, this is truly beautiful. I absolutely love it.
This is just absolutely beautiful. I could listen to this all day.
This is such an incredible album... it's completely seamless. You lose yourself in one song and you forget if it changes to another song or not.
Of course I IMMEDIATELY recognized the Clocktown one... beautiful. Just the whole album is beautiful.
Love the way this sounds, Kafei and Anju. Made me tear up.
Beautiful, sad, but also so calm and delicate. You've made something amazing here! I want this in my music library now!
Those eyes... Staring at me... Gives me the chills
That's one of my favourite scenes in video game history. The side-quest story in its entirety puts most games' MAIN stories to shame.
You made me cry. This song is so beautiful.
This is just amazing. i want to cry. best song i´ve heard in a lot of time. respect.
D'awww, ain't that cute? BUT IT'S WRONG! Sorry jk had to do it, don't hate me. That's pretty sweet, actually.
I don't know what is the context of this wonderful music but it's very emotional, it's incredible that a musician can share emotions like this. Thank you.
its amazing, beautiful
I remember when this first released and I listened to it on repeat. Here I am 12 years later...
For some reason, the piano from 0:37 reminds me a bit of Amelie's soundtrack... there is something in its rhythm that is so bittersweet...This piece is incredibly beautiful.
Has a hans zimmer feel to it. I like it.
I also get a Danny Elfman feel from it with the vocals at 1:54.
yeeess i was looking for a comment like this because it feels like hans zimmer music and even Nolan's Interestellar or Inception
MM is also on Wii Virtual Console and a Zelda Collector's Edition disc on Gamecube.
Chills... Seriously cannot wait for this remix/tribute album. MM is my #1 game...
Only just found out about this album yesterday, so fricken pumped!
This is the best fan-made remix album I have ever heard, and we've only been able to listen to half of it. I haven't been moved by a soundtrack this much since Journey's soundtrack.
Love these remixes so much
WHO CUTS ONIONS IN HERE

“Ogres are like onions, they have layers”
This was really awesome, man. I couldn't think of a better way to end the world than to listen to this song.
WOW! Liked and faved dude! This is the most beautiful rendition of a MM song I've ever heard. It's truly amazing!
Literal perfection, and nothing less.
anyone else notice the violin played Zelda's lullaby
+Nightbre I was just pointing out it was in there... some people could have missed it, I wasn't asking who played it.
Me: Don't cry, don't cry! *bursts into tears*
Absolutely beautiful.
THANK YOU for the new soundtrack!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!!!
Was looking for Time's End remix and found this. It's so awesome!
I hope you and your wife are doing great.’
-Sincerely, some guy on the internet.
this song is... is... i cant describe the feeling I get when listening to this ! Great work ! If only Nintendo could incorporate this song in their next game.
I am completely in tears.
