*says sketches shouldn't be masterpieces*
*shows masterpiece*
I was just thinking that XD
I said the word "sketch" shouldn't be used to describe something that looks like a fully-rendered illustration. Some of the pictures in this video I would indeed say go beyond being mere sketches (though I wouldn't call any of them masterpieces, let's not get carried away here!)
markcrilley we're all just being sarcastic XD but you are very talented. Keep up the great work! 😊
Yep like me. I call it sketches and not that good but onlookers faces says "!!!!!!!!!!".
please do pen and Ink sketches with close-hatching techniques
Alphonso Dunn
Don't know why but I love the look of cross hatching.
(I don't use it very often~ idk...)
Haha, I actually feel the same way about the look of cross hatching xD
I really like it,too. But I'm bad at it ^^'
I'd love to learn how but I don't know where to start..
+Maria A. Well,if Mark does another video about it, be sure to watch it ;)
Whenever someone uses the word "doodle" for an awesome drawing or something, it really does make my confidence waver a little
This has inspired me to go outside.
pokemon go is an alternative
What is this ''outside'' you speak of?
+minihali must be some black sorcery
But the outernet... it's too dangerous!
It's kinda funny how my art teacher has taught me nothing to help me improve my work, but as soon as I watched Mark Crilley I learned realism and manga.
SAME
I've learned more from RUclips videos than any art teacher and that's pretty sad
art teacher are only for grades i think
Agreed. My High School Art teacher only tells us to do stuff. That doesn't count as teaching in my opinion. It's more like giving orders.
SAME!
Holy moly I didn't realize how much detail was put into the third one until zoomed in. Intense!
Mark, i would greatly encourage you to spend as much time as possible in trying to embrace this style of art. I am a fan of your current pieces, that cannot be denied, but I find these old "sketches" to be your best work. Without a doubt they are my favorite pieces of any I have seen over 2-3 years of following you. You may criticize the looseness of some of your lines, but your ability to capture such imagery is remarkable none the less. I would love to see the entirety of your work from Taiwan as I could imagine myself spending hours following each and every line. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to gaze a little bit deeper into your portfolio of incredible art. These pen and paper pieces are fantastic.
All these drawings look soo good!! And detailed!! just with pen!!?? I mostly like the buildings and how detailed they were!!
This video makes me want to draw more in pen. There is something about drawing in pen/ink that I really like. B/c you can't erase I am not that worried about making "mistakes."
drawing in pen actually gave me a lot more confidence in my lines so i'd recommend it.
use G-pen
Hey Mark! I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos and think you are such an inspiration. You are a large reason why I started drawing myself and just by watching and listening to your videos I have learned so much. I've never taken a drawing course in my life and have had no drawing experience at all but watching your videos really allowed me to discover a new passion that I thought I would never get into. I know you'll probably won't respond to this but I just wanted to say keep up the amazing work and never stop doing what you're doing because you are such an inspiration and the world needs more people like you!
Thank you Matt!
The third drawing is my favorite! The detail is beautiful and I can't get enough of the amazing style! :)
Hi! I'm a Taiwanese. Your drawing are so amazing!
Thank you ^_^
+markcrilley روعة 💖💙👍💞
Your sketches are really incredible! A lot of the half finished ones were extremely gorgeous, especially. I can't wait to see more.
Thank you for this! I taught in Taiwan in 1990-91, but sadly only started the sketchbook habit many years later. These drawings bring back great memories.
Interesting! We were there right around the same time-- I'm sure the Taiwan we saw was quite a bit different from the Taiwan of today :)
I think when most people say "oh it's just a sketch" there more or less meaning that they drew this as an incomplete idea and/or concept which issn't yet refind. Atleast that's what i mean when i say it. Love your drawings Mark! thanks for inspiring me!
Yes, Mark, I would like to see more videos on how you do cross hatching. I was surprised to see recently there is a slight difference in the approach and result artists use. Of course, they are similar, and most are nearly identical, but I have seen some that don't reveal their secret (that they were cross hatched) until closer examination. It is a style I have never used but its worth buying a 01 Micron pen (or whatever you use) to try it out. I am one of those people you once mentioned - I buy the expensive paper, pens, etc, and then am afraid to use them up on "doodles". I realize nice supplies are worth less when they are put away than they are when you use them on a failed project.
I LOVE pen and ink sketches! I would love it if you did videos on some pen and ink, cross hatching, perhaps some urban sketching, location sketching sorta stuff. That would be wonderful.
Old, but gold!
I bring a sketchbook everywhere with me - my current one has a lot of architecture and nature in it ^^ I do, like you did, sit somewhere on a random street and just doodle whatever is around me~
"I will begin at the beginning"
😂😂😂😂
Taiwan is such a beautiful place I love it
I totally agree with the whole "doodle" and "sketch" thing 😆
Seeing your old artwork makes me want to draw more often. I want to someday have my own "old" drawings to look back on.
Thanks for sharing with us, really impressive work. :)
mark crilley philosophy of doodle vs sketch
Yes! Please do a tutorial about on-location pen and ink drawing in the style you show in this video. These sketches from Taiwan are beautiful and a valuable record of human history!
I would LOVE some videos about cross hatching and pen and ink illustration, Sir! I absolutely enjoyed looking at these. The style is just so fluid and beautiful....my favorite is the umbrellas.....♡
I really love your old art videos it inspires me that I can get better
I like your commentary on fully rendered "sketches" Mark.... I think you're right. It's the same on youtube with these "speed paint" videos...
I would love to see more cross hatching and ink sketching!
I really enjoy these "walks down sketchbook lane". Two thumbs up!👍👍
amazing I always loved this quote "a picture is worth a thousand words"
Yes, pen and ink sketches, PLEASE!!! WOW 👀
I've said this before, but Mark is the most talented person I've ever seen!
Thank you, you're very kind :)
+markcrilley I speak the truth and nothing but the truth
Thanks I also watched the older cross hatching video ! Yes more cross hatching would be good !
Thanks for sharing. Going to Taiwan in a month for the first time. I'll be sure to bring my sketchbook.
True doodle just breaks my heart
Drawings rather than photographs capture some quintessential essence of a place or places in time that is hard to describe. Maybe it conveys the feeling or impression. The partial, or focused drawing is like a memory that holds onto what is important and diminishes the less important.
Those practice sketches a young artist might make of everyday life might in retrospect may become an iconic moment. Who might think a drawing of a family eating dinner together in the seventies might contrast with the present day? A Rockwell moment.
Thanks for sharing.
i love looking at pen and ink urban sketching from different parts of the world. they often catch something of the culture that you can't get unless you visit there yourself.
My dad used to doodle these little, intricate, impressive looking patterns of swirling lines and shapes. It's hard to explain exactly what they looked liked. When my sister and I started experimenting with it, though, we found out it was as easy as letting the pen sort of wander and scribble randomly for a few minutes.
really like enjoy sketch!!
I'm from Taiwan, there's so many details in every work and lots of them are so common to bypass.
all works represent those days in 80's, so many memories...
I love sketching in pen, it makes for very light traveling. ;3
Simply incredible
I really like to watch people look back at their old art since I do that a lot too.
Thank you for sharing. Pen and ink seems like a challenge to me, so permanent. Scary! Maybe I'll try some today. I also appreciate your definition of what a sketchbook should be.
Really enjoyable, I admire this loose strokes and I think I didn't see anything so full of emotions as this sketches are. Thank you.
Mark definitely got to me when he was talking about the finished beautiful works in sketchbooks. I know personally it makes me really insecure as a beginner
Thank you; I do think some of these things should be called "illustrations" rather than "sketches."
some pictures just look amazing...
PLEASE do a pen and ink tutorial. I really like the tones you can get from Pen/Ink and I want to specifically work in that medium
Would love a video on pen & ink sketching. Those sketches of yours are really quite beautiful
Gorgeous! Crosshatching really warms up your work and gives it an entirely different vibe!
Really inspired me to go out and do some pen sketches as well!
I hope to one day be as good as you, Mark! Keep making these videos I'll always watch them (:
Thank you-- new video every Friday ^^
Yes please to both crosshatching and pen and ink sketches! :)
Yes please do Pen and ink tutorials and or showcases! I would love it and it would help me out immensely!
Yes please, more x hatching. Especially styles for materials and weights etc.
This the first video I've watched from your channel, and I have to say you have encourage me to not only continue practicing my drawing skills but to try another techniques, continue this amazing content in this channel.
I'd like to see more videos on cross hatching and pen and ink drawing so I hope you decide to do them Mark. Btw, I loved seeing the sketches. They inspired me to go grab a sketchbook and just sketch random things I come across throughout the day so thanks!
Mark I'm so thankful for you putting up this content because you have helped me a lot and I can see the improvement in my art. Also I made a Fighting manga on an A3 piece of paper and entered it in a compition and won it. So thank you
Your voice is so soothing! 😊
You should definitely show more cross sketching, it's beautiful ♡
Thank you Petra!
+markcrilley how much you get paid
Inspiring and insightful, Mark :)
You can learn so much from looking at these sketches. I find that sketching with pen instead of pencil, forces you to be bold, and increases your confidence and skill when drawing with a pencil as well.
Thanks for sharing this, Crilley ^^
I was in Europe in 1988, touring. wasn't keeping a sketch journal then. should've, but I did have photo's of the Berlin wall before it came down. what a different world then. cool work Mark.
Thank you for sharing such personal artwork. I would love to see more pen and ink drawings and tutorials. thank you very much.
This is awesome! I would LOVE to see more of this series, and also your tips on pen drawings. Enjoy your videos so much, thanks! :)
Thank you Gina!
A new video about cross hatching and sketching in general would be amazing, I have a great interest in learning how to do these things better.
Hey Mark, I really love your videos! They always get me in the mood for drawing, even at times where I don't know what to draw. Thank you so much!😊
Wow it's so beautiful! Your drawings really inspire me, especially these in particular because I'm trying to get better at drawing from real life
Finally other chilly video from Mark crilley.
These are actually legendary, well done. Honestly, I believe those loose pen sketches are far more beautiful than your current drawings. Both are great, but when I see how well you draw in pen, I can't help but point out how well you draw.
Hi Mark, love your videos and decided to take a few of your books out of the library to preview before I buy them. I recieved Mastering Manga through an interlibrary loan opened up the front page to find an autographed copy with a cute face drawing, it was from the Groton library in MA dated 2013, a very nice suprise. I also got The Drawing Lesson and have my watch all set and ready to start! I will be going broke buying all the books I borrowed, they are extreamly helpful! My husband thanks you too, your books and videos have dragged me away from a year and a half Sims 3 addiction!! ;0)
What a fun video! Thank you :-) I'm one of the weirdos who prefers art exploration in books to finished art. The pieces that have a detailed area that fades to sketchy outlines are my absolute favorites in any medium.
You've been in Taiwan? Why don't you go back there as a vacation? We might have a few surprises for you.
I hope to return someday :)
+markcrilley how much you get paid
+Joshua Wheeeler enough to ask you a question, wtf do you care?
+Ryu Hayabusa OK bye
+Joshua Wheeeler bye bae
Wow this is priceless for an artist
Great drawings. I absolutely LOVE the beat up look of that sketchbook though.
This is so inspiring and hypnotizing to me :'D so pretty
Thank you ^^
This video is really amazing
Just started my own sketchbook (as I just went back to drawing after not touching a pen for probably well over a year, maybe 2), this video right here is great. I don't want to stop anymore and maybe one day many years into the future I will grab my old sketchbooks, too
very enjoyable! !!! love the half finished look to them. they always seem more interesting to me.
I love these videos. They make me feel as if I'm sitting right there next to you and we're exploring the mysteries of your sketches and your past together. Just to see how your art has progressed over the years and all your different experimentations and techniques...
Thank you for your kind words, Danny :)
Of course
I would definitely like to see another video about cross-hatching!
a video on sketching would be awesome, I always put way to much detail in before I get the form I want. then I end up starting over 😦
You have been a huge inspiration for me for the past few months. I've started writing a story and have decided to go into art classes to help me get better at drawing. Thank you -sm
Thank you!
+markcrilley no problem.
Wow! Those are the most beautiful drawings you have in my opinion.
you should do like a video of you outside sketching :D would be great
agreed!
Yeah, i'd love it if you would do a second video on cross hatching, it's one of these subjects that i've always have found trickey.
Yes, please do a video on cross-hatching!
I would actually love to see an ink and pen video. Maybe almost a tutorial/line of thinking video while you draw something. The way you went about these drawings.
I want this sketchbook, it would be awesome to have
YES!! learning more about ink drawings would be awesome! oh and Epic drawings !!
Love these sketches, really like your style. Would be great to see some pen and ink and crosshatching tutorials.
I love this sketchy style, ye could do more on it :)
My "sketchbook" is kinda a mix of everything, I also use it as a notebook or for full illustrations, since I don't see the sense in carrying around multiple books with me...so by now I'm just going with "my book". It's great to go over older ones, bc sometimes you discover really good approaches/sketches/doodles/... or just things you had forgotten all about. They nearly need their own book shelf by now though :'D
Please do a pen and ink sketches video because that's my favourite way to sketch, I would love some helpful tips from a great artist like you 👍
I would love to see another crosshatching video.
Wow, these are fantastic!
thank you for that mark, that was quite interesting and intriguing
So inspirational! Those are such interesting and unique sketches. Thank you for sharing it with us
i would love some pen and ink stuff
Well here you go then: ruclips.net/video/RZ7FVTXFm4g/видео.html
These are absolutely gorgeous! You should make a video about drawing on location 😍
YES please do like a Chinese style dragon in ink!
Mark, I enjoy your videos. And I'm a loyal subscriber. Love your work!!!!!!
