I said the word "sketch" shouldn't be used to describe something that looks like a fully-rendered illustration. Some of the pictures in this video I would indeed say go beyond being mere sketches (though I wouldn't call any of them masterpieces, let's not get carried away here!)

Mark, i would greatly encourage you to spend as much time as possible in trying to embrace this style of art. I am a fan of your current pieces, that cannot be denied, but I find these old "sketches" to be your best work. Without a doubt they are my favorite pieces of any I have seen over 2-3 years of following you. You may criticize the looseness of some of your lines, but your ability to capture such imagery is remarkable none the less. I would love to see the entirety of your work from Taiwan as I could imagine myself spending hours following each and every line. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to gaze a little bit deeper into your portfolio of incredible art. These pen and paper pieces are fantastic.

Hey Mark! I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos and think you are such an inspiration. You are a large reason why I started drawing myself and just by watching and listening to your videos I have learned so much. I've never taken a drawing course in my life and have had no drawing experience at all but watching your videos really allowed me to discover a new passion that I thought I would never get into. I know you'll probably won't respond to this but I just wanted to say keep up the amazing work and never stop doing what you're doing because you are such an inspiration and the world needs more people like you!

Yes, Mark, I would like to see more videos on how you do cross hatching. I was surprised to see recently there is a slight difference in the approach and result artists use. Of course, they are similar, and most are nearly identical, but I have seen some that don't reveal their secret (that they were cross hatched) until closer examination. It is a style I have never used but its worth buying a 01 Micron pen (or whatever you use) to try it out. I am one of those people you once mentioned - I buy the expensive paper, pens, etc, and then am afraid to use them up on "doodles". I realize nice supplies are worth less when they are put away than they are when you use them on a failed project.

Drawings rather than photographs capture some quintessential essence of a place or places in time that is hard to describe. Maybe it conveys the feeling or impression. The partial, or focused drawing is like a memory that holds onto what is important and diminishes the less important.
Those practice sketches a young artist might make of everyday life might in retrospect may become an iconic moment. Who might think a drawing of a family eating dinner together in the seventies might contrast with the present day? A Rockwell moment.
    Thanks for sharing.

My dad used to doodle these little, intricate, impressive looking patterns of swirling lines and shapes. It's hard to explain exactly what they looked liked. When my sister and I started experimenting with it, though, we found out it was as easy as letting the pen sort of wander and scribble randomly for a few minutes.
