- You’ve definitely seen James Hong’s face before. From “Blade Runner” and “Airplane!” to “The Big Bang Theory” and “Seinfeld,” Hong has racked up over 500 credits. That’s more than any actor living or dead. Born in Minnesota, Hong is of Chinese descent and started acting in Hollywood in the 1950s. He has spent his career combating clichés and fighting for more opportunities for Asians in television and film. At the age of 90, Hong is showing no signs of slowing down.

This man is “LEGENDARY”
Why does this man not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?! Come on now, whoever nominates and ultimately chooses who receives a star needs to get their shit together and honor this man while he's still with us....
you pay $10,000 and have SAG card
He probably has a sag card. It’s just f paying. Why do you pay for your card. It’s supposed to be a simble if respect and admiration not wealth
All these guys and gals always end up in our "Journeyman's Walk of Fame"
@@LeeePowers but that sadly not as well known as the Hollywood boulevard. one is for the public the other for the actor. when you start getting into specifics or trade affairs the public looses interest because unless their a fan its usually just a passing moment for them. the Hollywood boulevard is a spectacle for the whole city to watch. the irony is that spectacle (and construction) is the reason the cost because the city wont pay for that
You (the actor) have to pay $30,000 out of your own pocket to have a star. It's not really as important as people think. More of a gimmick
I hope Mr. Hong realizes that he truly made a difference. I remember watching him as a kid, as a teenager, and as a young adult. I never gave much thought to the countless stereotypical roles he was offered. Now, as an older adult, I appreciate the perseverance he had and the patience he needed for the rest of 'us' to catch up. For what it's worth, you have my respect and admiration. Well done.
Ya you don’t notese it until he brings it up. Then memories of his work you’ve seen flash through your head and their all stereotypes and you just go ow shit
Before I knew what racism was, I knew who James Hong was. A seminal actor in my youth. I’m glad he’s still able to make an influence on people and see the changes he’s made for the better.
My exact sentiments.
His voice is one of the most iconic ones I have ever heard.

He's NINETY?! I pray I have his level of vitality at seventy, let alone ninety. Amazing.

Omg I was amazed too
I still have no idea how, but I met him at my grandmother's funeral when I was about 12 or 13. He gave me a card with a signature.
That's something ..
General rule is everyone in at least, a given society, is connected to everyone else by about six degrees of separation. If you have a few dozen friends, there's a solid chance at least one of them has a chain of connections stretching to just about anyone else in a given society. The more friends you have, the more connections you have.
If you are especially gregarious and have 200 friends(roughly the upper limit of what any given human can manage), there's a good chance one of them knows a guy that knows a guy etc that eventually knows personally the current sitting president(whoever that happens to be). What I am trying to say is; he was probably at the funeral because he knew someone that was attending either her funeral or someone else's on the same day.
@@Vaprous 6 degrees of separation theory.

This man is a legend. He should have his own hollywood star.

James Hong is super nice too. My husband worked on a film called Trinity Goodheart as the Art Director . Mr. Hong loved exploring a new city to him and he had never been to Charlotte NC before. He asked my husband to take him out and he called me to join him. We have best friend one of them was working on the film with my husband Derek, so she invited her boyfriend to go along. Everything was packed because a huge basketball tournament was going on that weekend but we were to a cozy Chinese restaurant in downtown. He asked us what our favorites were and he ordered dishes not on the menu that he wanted prepared. We were going to all share the check but he paid for it without us realizing. Then he wanted to go somewhere to sit and have drinks. We went to one club that was supposed to be quite but not. The bar/club was way too crowded so we left to find the piano bar in downtown. It had also been converted to a club fir the night but it wasn’t nearly as crowded. The bouncer recognized him and we were able to skip the line. He also carried a little card that said who he was but that was not an issue at all. One person in the crowd recognized him from The Golden Child with EddieMurphy and ask for a picture and he did. He was very kind to anyone who recognized him. We danced some in the piano bar now club and he got us drinks. We ALL had a fabulous time including him. We got him back to his hotel around midnight because they had promo photos the next day. We didn’t go to the lunch for the last day James Hong finished up the film because we had had him to ourselves last night. We were told later that he kept dally asleep during the lunch. Apparently he was worn out from the night before. Such a sweet and humble guy.
What a wonderful experience! I laughed when you said he paid without any of you realizing. That’s the most Asian thing ever. 🤣
Haha yesh. Asian changed but old customs will never die.
This young man has gone above and beyond. 90 yrs acting over 66 yrs no signs of stopping and blazed a trail for the Asian American actors that are extraordinary today!!?? This man deserves a star and more for the work he has done for the young and younger generations!!! Keep on Mr. Hong keep on!!!

Mr. Hong is a very well known figure, not only for Asian-Americans and of course not only for Americans! ;-)
I remember him playing a character in Malcom In The Middle
Yes he played the man Malcolm's grandma was gonna marry. I like that episode.
He's a national treasure, in my opinion. I always get super excited when I find out he's in something I like, which is often! My favorite roles of his will always be his one-off role in Malcolm in the Middle, and his voice over work in Diablo 3. Small roles, but he put so much passion into his performances you can't help but fall in love them.
An absolute *pioneer* . A brave, bold, talented, and determined artist that is completely _devoted_ to his craft. Refused to accept the limitations in an industry that constantly tries to put a ceiling on you, _beat_ the dream out of you, or _demands_ for you to compromise your own self-worth. Wow..good for him, I would give _anything_ to have *one-tenth* of his strength..

Wow, Hollywood always says it’s Samuel L. Jackson, but is it really James Hong?
James Hong has been acting almost as long Samuel L. Jackson has been alive so it's no surprise that Hong (being 20 years older and still working) had more time to rack up the credits. Hollywood says it's Sam Jackson because he's more famous - when you hear his name, you know exactly who it is lol. But I love Hong so much - a true character actor.
Misinformation! Hollywood never said this.
Hollywood says SLJ is the highest grossing, not the one with the most credits.
Pretty sure it's Frank Welker.
@@mrhippo2874
With 2,000 voice credits under his big belt, Frank Welker is undoubtedly the one who surpassed Mel Blanc. But on occasion, characters done by Frank, and James Hong cower in the presence of true villains voiced by Mark Hamill.

Loved this video on James Hong. He's been a mainstay for Asian acting community for decades and such an overlooked face and name. He's become the one of the traditional character faces that you expect to see. He's caught up with the other Asian greats of the early years and if there's a Asian Acting Hall of Fame, he should be up there with all the greats. Much appreciation to his craftmanship and hope for many more roles for him.
