The TRUTH about the Yakima Easy Rider trailer!

  • Is the Yakima Easy Rider trailer the best kayak trailer in terms of ease of use, maneuverability, size, storage, etc.??
    In this Yakima Easy Rider review I wanted to find out for myself it this would fit my needs of ability to haul 3 or more large kayaks, be easy enough for my wife to handle alone, and store inside my garage with cars parked in there. A very tall order, indeed! BUT with happy results.
    I spent a lot of time comparing the Yakima to Malone, Harbor Freight, Northern Tools, and other kayak trailers to find the one to do what I needed it to do. Of all the ones I looked at, the Yakima Easy Rider was the only one I felt that would do the job. Also coupling this with the Yakima Big Catch Saddles makes this a kayak hauling dream! I hope you enjoy the overview!
    I bought this as an open box item at Rack Warehouse and saved a significant amount of money.

      Good vid! When I was looking for a trailer to haul my two Hobies I looked at and liked this one a lot but needed so be able to stand it completely on its end so ended up passing on this one. I too looked at the Malone but didn't like the leaf spring suspension so passed on that. I ended up settling on the Sylvansport Go Easy, which wouldn't have worked here as it can't hold 3 big kayaks but instead it can double as a small utility trailer which is nice. I made a short video showing it a while back: ruclips.net/video/OUlNej71WhE/видео.html

      I usually beach launch where I go instead of using the boat ramp. It’s just easier for me.
      Should be easy to ramp launch if ramp is deep enough except for a kayak on the bottom level. Clearance there would be tough if kayak was floating.

    Easy Rider Trailer. More pros than cons. Excellent welds on the aluminum frame. Built very well, easy to assemble with basic tools. Torque specifications for all components. Blue Loctite and nylon lock nuts used at critical points. I have Feel Free 11.5 on bottom. About 87 lbs. I have an Old Town Sportsman
    PDL 106 about 107 lbs. on top. Big Catch saddles for both. Suspension is awesome, even on fairly aggressive off road trails. Pulling it with my 2021 Toyota Sequoia TRD PRO. Feels like towing nothing. Tow Haul mode great for mountain passes and steep downgrades. Try Tow Haul mode even if not towing. It hauls ass, so be very careful. Great acceleration and excellent engine braking with just a tap of the brake pedal. Cons- I have both kayaks centered on trailer. The folding tongue will not fold completely in because it hits the bottom of the cradle bracket. With my center positioning of kayaks, the cradles block the screw holes for the spare tire bracket. I’m going to install Nutserts at alternate position, or modify bracket to get it to fit. Owners manual suggests 60% of the weight forward of the axles. This makes it a bit harder to use as a cart then Yakima videos show. Still works as a cart but my wife has trouble, and lack of strength to move it very far, or over rough terrain. I am a dedicated Yakima user since early 90’s when I was heavily into mountain biking. Still have the original Rocket box (black & white), has to be over 30 years old, and works good as new. Use it mostly to haul snow ski’s & snow boards. Occasionally use it to haul fishing rod & gear. Won’t be doing that once the $500 rod box is available. Sad Yakima products next to impossible to get at this time. News from Yakima is most products won’t be available until January 2022. Please do your best Yakima to expedite availability. I’m jonesing for your products. I refuse to buy other inferior products such as Thule & Rhino, etc. Yakima rules even though slightly more expensive than the others. You get what you pay for.

    • @CatchingFins
      @CatchingFins  3 года назад

      Cost of trailer is about $3000 but I have seen occasional sales for $2500.

    • @ArbitraryLifestyle

    Just got my EasyRider based on your review. What are you using to not scratch the bottom level when you load the boat?

    • @CatchingFins
      @CatchingFins  4 года назад +1

      Glen Ghoulie with the Hobie I didn’t do anything, looked closer and saw that it was just scuffed not scratched. The powder coat they use is pretty durable.
      But since I made that I sold the Pro Angler and bought an Old Town Sportsman Autopilot 136. It has a lower profile so I was able to mount a set of Big Catch saddles on the bottom which keeps the boat off the bars with the exception of some contact during loading and unloading.
      If scratching/scuffling really bothers you (understandably) possibly look at wrapping the areas of contact with heavy duty gorilla tape possibly.

    • @CatchingFins

      I personally have never tried it. May be possible but not ideal. Top kayaks are high enough to make it hard unless very steep ramp and bottom level doesn’t have a lot of clearance so one end of kayak floating could cause it to bind. At the perfect steepness ramp you probably could get it to work but don’t expect that everywhere.

    Warning about the easy rider. While it's almost a perfect kayak trailer, it is fragile. The slightest accident with total it. The fender snagged a concrete post at a gas station pump, barely moved forward, and I heard 500 different crunches at once. Almost every component was bent, broken, tired popped, fender shredded, axles broken, rails bent all kinda ways... totaled just like that after 5 weeks of use. Too expensive for that. Customer service didn't respond at all. I would avoid. I'm currently looking for a steel trailer.
