"Son Goku" is just the Japanese version of "Sun Wukong". Dragon Ball started as a straight-up parody (with a sci-fi theme) of Journey to the West before morphing into it's own thing along the way.

Son Wukong is not just a monkey king, he's the Handsome(or beautiful) Monkey King
P/S: 72 magic spells not transformations. It's a very popular mistranslation

    * The reason why Heaven don't approve of using magic to become immortal is it's likely to create immortal villains(or demons). The right way is to accumulate wisdom & good karma by doing good deeds through 1 or multiple lives time(reincarnation) then they make you a god, magic is suppose to be just a tool to help doing good deeds. The 500 years gap between calamities is to give you a chance to prove you're worthy of immortality(by accumulating good karma & wisdom)

So just because it could go wrong, you need to make it illegal or legally inaccessible. Instead, give them a legal method that takes forever to get done because it’s the better alternative.
That hits a little too close to home

@@catherinecao4810 It's the method pretty much every human-eating demons used to achieve immortality(some actually sustain immortality by continuously sucking human life force)

Actually, it was 'put to paper', the assorted tales and legends--like with Homer writing the Illiad, he was recording the stories that had been going-around for centuries--that had arisen-around the real-life Buddhist Monk's, Xuanzang's, pilgrimage to India for clarification on Buddhist sutras, in an attempt to clear-up the story, by Wu Cheng'en; Anthony Wu just translated it into English.

As for that convenient castle the monkeys acquired, it actually belonged to the demon king of havoc that was threatening the monkeys while Sun Wu Kong was gone.

About the shape shifting : I think the idea is that if he changes shape, the heavenly court can't find him.
(sense someone's energy came in play later on, so I guess in the good old days, if the jade emporer wanted to hit Son Wukong with lightning, he would have to "take aim" himself)

Just to point something out. The Buddha is *not* a god. He is a man named Gautama who obtained enlightenment making him have the *abilities* of a god.

I seriously don't know how people keep making that mistake either. Like... it's such a basic thing that even non-Buddhists should know it

The 72 Transformations also function as 72 Bodies, meaning he can regenerate wounds, lost limbs, etc...

It's strange that Chinese think India as the West, whereas Indians think the Europeans as the West.

I don't know if you're aware of Stephen Chow, but his two Chinese Odyssey films from 1995 are a loose adaptation of the Journey to the West novel.
    And they're awesome.

I’m seeing a lot of hanuman parallels here; immortality, shape shifting, super strength and size changing? Both are cultural icons and super famous? Kinda sus bruh
