- Ecce homo -
Well, that's probably because this wasn't a cheap show like letterman. He didn't get a cheap laugh out of it. He added just some culture to his show. Maybe it wouldn't hurt if you people tried that too, every once in a while.
After this he quotes a part from the book (seemingly at random) and asks his sidekick what he thinks of it. The part he reads is: "Selbst der Hurra Optimismus ist die Perversion eines Motivs, das einmal andere Tage sah" When he flippantly responds despite it being a complicated phrase) he asks him, if he is even listening, making a joke of the sidekick, not of the phrase he read. The phrase is "Even the "Hurray optimism" is just the perversion of a motive that has once known different days".
I'm not sure if I wanted to imply quite that much ;-) Anyway, the sidekick often gives schmidt contra (I hope you can say it like that in english) and schmidt usually asks him for research that he prepares before the show.
He misquoted Adorno in a previous show, here's what he said concerning it: "Der Satz heisst nicht wie ich Depp es gesagt habe, 'Es gibt kein Richtig im Falschen', sondern er heisst korrekt 'Es gibt kein richtiges Leben im Falschen.' " "The sentence is not, how silly me wrongly said, there is no right inside the wrong. Correctly it says there is no real life inside the wrong." That's the literal translation. He corrected himself, because the publishers of Adorno's book (suhrkamp) asked him to.
Oh, I forgot to say earlier, he has also written several books, so I think he has some measure of admiration for adorno and nietzsche probably. Oh god, I just stumbled upon a book of his on amazon: Wohin?: Neueste Notizen aus dem beschädigten Leben. Die Focus-Kolumnen. It's just a compilation of his focus magazine columns though.
He didn't laugh about it. First, he was quoting Nietzsche and then, when he came to Adorno, he says something like "Adorno is for those, who think Nietzsche is too light-minded" Of course this was a joke. Secondly, The Suhrkamp publisher sent him "Minima Moralia: Reflexions from Damaged Life", because last time Harald Schmidt was quoting Adorno from memory but with a slight mistake. In this clip Schmidt apologised and quoted him right this time.
He is a very likeable guy really. I wonder why this video has only english comments. Don't you think it's superficial to judge him, if you don't even understand what he is saying? If he is being selfironic, would you even notice? What he is saying is pretty brilliant by the way. He also has a very nice voice for reading and aloud and the text has been suggested by a viewer. He didn't make any jokes about it afterwards.
no never, because Harald is as wise as them. but as you say that they would not only have no reason, but admiration for him, if you assume they spit, you are probably lowest class
I think you call it "Lachkonserve" in german, or "Lacher vom Band". It's not widely used though I think. Laugh tracks aren't something from the past though. Many modern sitcoms still use them. A nice exception is the big bang theory. They use a real audience for that show, I much prefer that. It seems to be much harder for the actors though, since the audience can be distracting. Btw, this might be the first time I had an intelligent discussion on youtube :-)
Well, it sounded weird to me too. It is pretty much the literal translation of what I would have said in german and dict.cc said it was right :-/ Anyway, what I meant is, he hits back at him / contradicts him sometimes.
What do you mean with laughter? There is a normal audience, no laugh track or something. The side kick is usually clever in a simple mans way, Schmidt just likes to trip him ;-)
He just used the name I think, probably to satirize. I haven't read it though. I don't think philosophy has a following in mass culture here. Sure there are books like "Wer bin ich und wenn ja wie viele?" (Who Am I and If So How Many?: A Journey Through Your Mind) which is a big time bestseller from the philosophy genre, it is a great book but it is written in a pretty populist style. Real philosophy shows like The Literary Quartet have pretty low rating figures (around 500.000).

Of course he wasn't a Nazi, he died 6 years before Hitler was even born. But why do you mention all this on a video in which Harald Schmidt reads Nietzsche and Adorno?
"damaged life cannot be lived rightly"? A better translation might be 'There cannot be a right life amidst wrongs.' Harald Schmidt, I miss you. There cannot be witty entertainment in German TV without you. You once promissed to us a Show, in which whenever someone says "Arschfick" (bum -fuck in Englisch), the next word will be Adorno. In other words, a mixture of sophisticated and vulgar entertainment, the Synthesis of good and bad taste. I'm really sure, good old Teddy would have understood this. Now , you left us alone with Krömer and Welke, and we're drowned in an ocean of vulgarity.
adorno: "es gibt kein richtiges leben im falschen" Feist: "damaged life cannot be lived rightly" irgendwie deprimierend.
Irgendwie erinnert mich Günthers Englisch an Haralds eigene schwäbelnden Gehversuche in der Sprache (u. a. "you once promised to us a show", oder die deutsche Kommasetzung, die eine deutsche Atem- und Satzmelodie andeutet).

Super!
2020 hats hoffentlich jeder verstanden!

teddy :D
und Nietzsche, der "gute Laune Entertainer" lol

Nietzsche would have spit on these television clowns.
True
And so would have Adorno ...

because people are idiots if they connect germans to nazis. the germans were finally freed of the nazis.
His name would probably be Johnny Fool in german ;-)

Ich hab's vergessen. Ist jetzt auch nicht mehr wichtig.

deoink
And you are aware of the fact that Hitler was someone you can call a Vegetarian?
harald schmidt=Julius Streicher
Pfui!
Kein Wunder dass ihre Show eingestellt wurde. Unwitzig
