    I just subscribed after watching this video "How I Would Learn Structural Engineering If I Could Start Over"... I am a third year student in bachelor program in civil engineering and I had backlogs in Solid Mechanics. Now without those basics I am really having issues in Structural Engineering subjects. But your videos are giving me confidence. Thanks a lot

    As someone who has done residential engineering design in Sydney, I find it frustrating that most builders don't care much about our details on-site and think our specifications are outdated or impractical. Also, the industry can't support career growth, so you'll need to leave it behind at one point and proceed to multiple-level buildings or migrate to infrastructure jobs. Budget is always tight for jobs in this industry, so real estate teams and architects get the most out of it and leave the remaining for the engineer. Each job had to be rushed! the sad part is that our plans are required for paper or council requirements. I loved my job back then; there was a lot of problem-solving with creative architecture design, but I had to leave.

      I can understand that, but in the custom and remodel fields, I think the engineers in our area do quite well (though they mix it with bigger jobs). I know what you mean, if you have a tract or “seat of the pants” builder, they think they know it all and you are just a requirement for the council. It’s understandable because at one point they DID know it all, as far as what was needed for earlier home design, and engineering was only for high end projects. Now all houses are built to within an inch of design standards, and each part is indispensable.

    Hi! Is it allowed for a structural engineer to draw a plan of a residential house like an architect do? Have you ever tried to create architectural drawings?

    • @ibrahimmomani9451
      @ibrahimmomani9451 23 дня назад +1

      Engineers usually design and sketch ideas by hand. Drafters are the people to go to for making the design live on paper. Knowing how to use the right program, you can draft anything. Architectural drawings have properties different from those of engineering drawings.

    • @da_arch
      @da_arch 23 дня назад

      @@ibrahimmomani9451 Yeah, but I was wondering about the side of the law. For example, I live in Russia, and I'am allowed to draw both an architectural and engineer projects, if we speak about the residential housing. So what about Australia? 😁

    You skipped the permit, which requires submission of calculations and the plans-which have to show the intent to the satisfaction of the local jurisdiction. An engineer who understands the local process intimately (even knowing the plans examiner personally) is a huge help in the moving the project forward.

      wdym by that? Investing to a structural engineer is literally worth every penny for the project. Investing in a structural engineer is like investing to your safety. Us Structural engineers mainly focuses on the strength of the structures that contractors are building, assuring that those structures can withstand all present loads (dead loads, live loads, roof live loads, rain loads, wind loads, earthquake loads, etc etc.). Not consulting to a structural engineer is like killing all of the people who will use or accomodate the said structure.

    • @BEngHielscher
      @BEngHielscher  24 дня назад +1

      Is being a structural engineer worth it? If that’s your question it really depends if you’re passionate about the work and industry. The work can be fulfilling but like many other types of work it definitely has its cons too. My opinion is that you should weigh these things up for yourself and choose what will best suit you. Do your research and talk to people in the industry to find out more. Hope this helps :)

      Architects design the look, feel and function of the structure. Engineers design the structural components so the building can withstand the expected loads. The discussion around materials and layout should be collaborative discussion although perhaps you’ve had a different experience here. What career did you change to?
