I went to a doctor for a rash. And he said I needed a blood test and a ct chest scan. Didn't make any sense, so went on to search for a different doctor. But by then the rash just went away by itself. So it seems to happen in every field.

Once I thought my muffler was bad, took it to a shop, they wanted to charge me $600, said my catalytic converter was bad.
A friend of mine suggested I use the shop she uses, took my car in, the mechanic looked under the car, found I had a broken bolt connecting the muffler, fixed it in 5 minutes and did not charge me. Have used that shop since.

@Matthew Caughey True. I have a small mechanic shop I goto. They give me a fair price, and I've never had an issue after the work. I recommend them to everyone.
On the other hand, I went to Midas once and they told me I needed $1500 worth of work done when all I needed was spark plugs. I tell people to avoid them like the plague whenever mechanics are brought up. I doubt I'll ever goto a chain auto shop again.

I had once a shop try to sell me all new valves because of the engine belt snapping. Since it had an 3S-fe engine i KNEW it could not ever snap the valves. They allegedly tried measuring cyl pressures and they were all off.
What was happening is that the put on the belt incorrectly. So i said i want the car back.
And when the car was returned it was lacking any coolant. Even though they charged me for it.

This is exactly why I went into the auto repair business 20 years ago. I was actually a commercial parts sales manager. The local shops would buy parts from me for a little less than their customers could walk in and buy them for, mark them up between 50% to 75% tell them the parts came from the dealer, then charge crazy labor on top of it. I would get so many complaints coming from local customers that these shops would never fix their cars right it was horrible. I finally got fed up and started out on my own. I fight everyday to try to make sure people don't get ripped off in this area. Unfortunately I cant save them all, but even if I keep one person from getting taken advantage of I feel better.

Now you have these plumbers, electricians and HVAC guys who put you on the clock as soon as they get in their van. • @PGIFilms
      @PGIFilms 9 лет назад +4

***** I Agree with you on this one. I think it's reasonable to charge maybe a $20-$25 flat consultation fee if a mechanic/technician/plumber/contractor has to come to your place in order to inspect the issue and provide an estimate. I have a friend that does mechanical/construction/handyman work, if he happens to over at my place and I ask him to check something out for me, he'll do it without asking for anything, that part of doing favors for friends, but I actually call him and ask him to come over and check something out for me, I'm going to at least offer him $10 for gas and for taking the time to come out, then leave it up to him whether he wants to actually take it. That hour or two he took to swing by is still time he could have used working on actual paying projects or actually take a break from working on projects. If I call someone for a consultation I ask what their consultation fee is, and if it's $25 or less I wouldn't mind paying it, that's a fair price to pay to someone that is knowledgable, skilled, licensed/certified, and running a professional business.
I wish I could charge a $10 consultation fee during the tax season where I work, but the company wont allow it. We all get these bullshit clients that come in with documents for investments, retirement plans, itemized deductions, small businesses, rental properties, etc. that are considered "complex returns" we spend AT LEAST an hour doing the tax return only to have them say, "We'll let me think about whether I want to have you file my taxes yet." then they take all their document and leave. All of those clients that do that, they think we're fucking stupid, that we don't know what they're doing. We know exactly what they are doing, they're price shopping and/or checking our results against the results the have at home so they can file for free doing it themselves. If the company would charge just a $10 consulting fee, maybe even a $5 consulting fee, it would go a long way to stopping people from wasting our time trying to get something for nothing.

Lawyers actually have a lot more accountability than mechanics, everything is recorded and discoverable to the judge and opposing council so there is not really a lot of room to screw over your client and if you do the consequences are disbarment plus a legal malpractice suit. That being said the whole legal system itself is designed by lawyers to be profitable to them so they don't really need to break any rules.

All in the interest of our clients, who were always very happy with the results. The truth didnt matter because the truth was only what we could prove or disprove it to be
The thing is, everyone in the industry lies. An honest lawyers is a very shitty lawyer because he will be playing a game against cops/insurance adjusters/doctors/other lawyers who ALL will lie and therefore have a huge advantage.

Last week I took my truck to the reputable shop that I always go to to have a simple oil change. Being the good guys that they are they looked my engine over and found that my "radial spark stabilizers" had gone bad on both banks. On the invoice here it shows that they were $175.90 a piece plus labor . . . but hey if they said they gotta be replaced they gotta be replaced; apparently not doing so will cause the engine to go into "hyper knock mode". If this happens, well . . . I can't really explain it, they used a lot of technical terms (these guys really know their stuff), but its something bad that could ruin the engine. At least they didn't have to order them because they said they had a set on the shelf in back. Didn't take long at all for them to be installed and then I was on my way.

PCV, means positive crankcase ventilation. A standard PCV valve is approximately $3.50 at your local auto parts store. The best way to evaluate a PCV valve, is by weight. When it gets too heavy and clogged with the paraffins inside your oil, this prohibits crankcase ventilation from moving throughout the engine. It will build pressure when it is inoperable, and force oil out of the engine through least path of resistance. Which is the seals located around the rotating components. Front and rear main seals. I personally have pulled PCV valves out of cars, that have never been replaced. A simple $3.50 component at your local auto parts store, can save you thousands of dollars at the repairer. It is one of the most commonly overlooked repairs, under the hood. The next most commonly overlooked condition under the hood. Is whether or not the vehicle has been hit. Mechanics and transmission guys, never look at those things. 85% of your repairs, that don't normally occur in natural conditions oh, such as daily driving. Can be related to a vehicle that has not been repaired properly from an accident. One of the most common accidents for vehicles on the road, is actually flood damage. The theory is... Letting the car dry out in the sun, fixes itself. However. Under that carpet, under that plastic cladding that never gets cleaned, is usually some type of ecological disaster. Black mold is one of the most common things found in a flood-damaged vehicle. You can dry out the seats. You can steam clean the carpet. You can replace all of the modules. but that heating and cooling box that blows air straight in your face, is usually hiding a respiratory illness. And I guarantee you, the guy who sold you the car, had no clue. I personally tracked 35 million dollars worth of high-end vehicles, from a Dealership in Chicago that was flooded out. the insurance company paid the dealership for all of the total losses. Then that very same insurance company took all those cars to an auction house in Indiana. And sold them without disclosing the damage. they were bought by dealers from five different states. And put right back out on the lot. Buying a car is the epitome of Murphy's laws. If it seems too good to be true. It probably is. in the current age of automotive retail. You don't actually get a car. you are agreeing to a long-term financing contract for a service package. because the owners of Volkswagen know... You can't afford a $10,000 all wheel drive transmission. The guys at Ford Motor Company know, they are experimenting with your wallet.
why do mechanics think it's okay to fleece the customer? Because the manufacturers been getting away with it for decades.

John barfneck And it's not only happening in the car business, trust me. We had a small roof damage after a storm, nothing big but it needed a fast repair that I couldn't do myself. The insurance company covered it, all good there, and we asked a professional repair company to do the job. Low and behold, when the dude made the offer, he tried to charge us personally (from our own pocket, not from the insurance company) over €3000 - that's about $2700-$2800 if I'm correct - for stuff that wasn't even broken to start off with, and only for one side of the house. If we wanted to have the other side repaired as well, it would have been at least €6000, from our own pockets. On top of what he was going to charge the insurance company with (about €1000 for the original damage), of course. He mentioned leaks everywhere, ripped zinc everywhere, bad drain pipes, rotten wood,.... you name it. We declined his offer, and asked to only repair the stuff that was broken due to the storm and what the insurance was covering. Needless the say he never showed up again. When we got a second professional company for the repairs, I told them what the first guy had told us and how much money has was demanding. He looked at me as if I was some crazy alien or something. There was absolutely nothing wrong with all the extra things the first dude had mentioned. In fact, all those things had been just replaced months before we bought the house, as we found out that same day (found the paperwork with all the invoices).

They said they "thought" that was it and told her it would be $2000. I talked to my uncle and he said a head gasket would be about $700 for her Jeep and that he could get a rebuilt engine for about $1500. In the end she finally relented and he told her that the reason she kept cracking radiators was because the frame was rotted out and would flex when hard turning and crack the radiator. I climbed under and yup, he was right... total rot box. We traded it in the next weekend and she never brought her car back there for service.

I'm a crtified master mechanic for 20 years. Oil dry wasn't used on the air filter to appear dirty... They just removed the air filter using dirty gloves, pretty standard. The PCV valve usually just needs to be cleaned after 20 years, never replaced. My main concern is if this woman is a certified mechanic then why did she tell the mechanic to remove the dirt from her air filter? (When she was on the phone) 7:53

I love shows like this. People that take the time to investigate frauds, so many of them out there. Don't ever stop investigating all these frauds
