    Easiest way to learn how to start rolling is to let the clutch out until you start to roll/bog. That's where the engagement point is. Once you learn that spot slowly start adding gas and then release the clutch fully. Overtime you'll learn how to go quicker and become more smooth. #keepthemanualsalive

    I have a 2013 HONDA CIVIC SI and it took a couple days to get used to driving with 6 gears. Completely different than my 1990 Acura Integra RS. I look at my RPMS every now and then, but me driving Manual transmissions for 14 years, I've learned to listen to the engine. You have a great tutorial video keep up the good work.

    I wanted to thank you greatly sir. I recently purchased a 06 Mazda6 5 speed. I was relatively new to driving stick other than the auto shifting in a Jetta and watching friends drive stick at work. While the dealer was nice enough to give me a crash course I was still lost on a number of things. 1. Starting from a standstill without a number of problems happening. 2. Starting on a hill(love the parking break method for now) and 3. Skipping gears(I was doing this bi-accident and shifting smoothing glad to know I didn't mess up my car). Without this video it would have taken me weeks but today I was able to do all of these things smoothly and without jerking or stalling. I really don't know how to thank you enough.

    For all of people who didn't understand what was happening here, let me explain it to you. First you have to understand that a car has 4 important parts. The engine, the clutch, the transmission (gears) and the driving wheels. All these parts can be connected or disconnected from each other. The clutch (pedal) connects the engine with the gears (when released) and disconnects them (when pressed). If you press the clutch pedal, no power is distributed from the engine to the transmission and the wheels. Also when your gearbox is in neutral, the driving wheels are disconnected from the transmission. As result no power from the engine can be distributed to the wheels. To move the car from standing position, the engine has to do a lot of effort because of the heavy weight of the car. This is why you need the clutch, which is nothing else than two round plates that rotate and touch each other when you release the clutch pedal. When you release the clutch you distribute very gently the engine power to the transmission and the wheels. If you release the clutch very fast the engine has not enough power to move the car and the car stalls. To avoid stalling, many people press gently the gas pedal while releasing the clutch. This action gives the engine more power and it avoids stalling the engine. After moving the car from standing position its not a problem releasing the clutch a little faster. Each time you change the gear you have to disconnect it from the engine by pressing the clutch pedal. Each gear has a recommended speed for up shift and down shift. In first gear you drive until 10 mph and above that you up shift at 2d gear. At 2d gear you drive up to 18mph and shift to 3d gear when you drive faster than that speed. You drive at 3d gear up to 31 mph. You drive at 4th gear up to 43 mph. At 5th gear you drive from 56 mph and above. The engine may stall when you try to drive at 5th gear at 10mph because this gear is not recommended for that kind of speed. To avoid stalling while driving (not standing position) you have to lower gears and also avoiding low engine rpm.

    Best tutorial on youtube. You mention all the little things that the other videos failed to mention like how you have to give a little gas in the 1 to 2 upshift or how the car will lurch a bit when downshifting at a low rpm without rev matching. See, I didn't know these things before. That's probably why my upshifts were so slow and my downshifts were jerky. And it's important to teach beginners those little things or else how would they learn properly? Great job, man.

Yes it's the lazy way to drive a stick! Rev matching and downshifting is the proper and most safest way to stop when driving a stick. It's nerve racking not being in a gear! 5. Replease clutch

    Thank you for the simple, but clear and informative video on driving stick shift. You have a clear, well organized lesson plan and you explain the basics and how thy relate to the topic. One of the best how-to's in general, and the best how-to on learning to drive stick. I learned in ten minutes what a dozen people were not able to tell me.
    I am now on day 2 of my car (after having driven an automatic for years) and you have cleared up a lot of my questions by just watching your video. After my first day with the car (approximately four hours previous experience on five separate occasions) I knew that I was doing something wrong, but did not know exactly what ; after watching your first video, most of my questions were answered and today I stalled less, but my takeoffs were incredibly smooth. I think the most important lesson from your videos is to spend time finding that engagement point, and holding it, until you engage and then releasing slowly. I tended to get excited and jerk my foot off initially, but no one told me that. I also like that you give people options and let them choose.
    What most people do not realize is that no matter what technique you choose, it will result in wear-and.tear and that there is a cost to anything, whether it be engine-braking versus brake pads, or wearing out the clutch versus the hand brake on hill starts.
    And to close, moving from a standstill with out touching on the accelerator was pretty amazing.

    Thanks for the video man, this and maybe a couple of other videos have helped me. Well, this one mainly helped me the most.
    I like the method where you clutch and find engagement point then let the car roll and then press the gas.
    Rather than the press the gas to 1500-2000k rpm then SLOWLY let off the pedal and it sets you off. When I use that method I tend to stall more but this method that you shown is more comfortable. Seriously man, greatly appreciate the tutorial and everything.

      Get used to the ‘throttle response’ in your car so you know how much gas to give it when you downshift, if you tap or blip the throttle super lightly rpm’s will rise slightly maybe just right or maybe not enough - you can blip it harder (foot further down/more gas) if your going faster and going down a gear. But wether light or hard throttle is dependent on the speeds you do in each gear - rpm’s as well you want to study them and engrave them in your brain so you become aware at what speeds can you safely downshift into the lower gear and simultaneously how much throttle to give the car for a proper ‘rev match’
      *These civic Si’s for instance have a bit of a lag in throttle response on the stock tune in the ECU so when you want to rev match downshift in these cars you have to blip the gas HARD in order to get any sort of matching capabilities out of it… rev matching itself is not to difficult once you learn your car and know what it’s going to do and what it’s going to sound like (sound is a big component as well) the more tricky part is downshift rev matching multiple gears - you have to learn how to dance 🤪

    i have a 2014 civic si (my first manual car) and i have a couple of questions:
    1. do you slowly have to release the clutch when changing gears? If i dump the clutch while going from 3rd to 4th gear, i can still feel a slight jerk in the car
    2. is it bad to add gas while releasing the clutch? ive heard mixed reviews on this
    3. if i'm in a parking lot going approximately 12 miles per hour in second gear, and suddenly take my foot off the gas (but I don't push the brake or clutch pedal), I suddenly feel the car slow down as if I were pushing the brakes which ruins the smoothness of the ride. does this happen to you and why?
    4. how slow is too slow in terms of releasing the clutch? ie. if i release the clutch pedal slowly, how slow can I do it before i start riding the clutch and damage it?
    5. another issue I have is with the SI, i notice that when i push the clutch in, the rpms drop a lot faster than it does in other cars, so when i am readyto engage the clutch after changing the gears, the car jerks a bit because the engine speed is much lower than the gear
    5. in the past, i was having trouble transitioning between first and second gear, but i noticed if i hold the clutch at the engagement point the transition is smoother. is this bad? am i riding the clutch?

    • @symawd
      @symawd  10 лет назад +7

      Rajiv Rao
      1. You don't need to go slow. Watch my feet in the video.
      2. To engage first or between gears? When engaging first it isn't really bad but between gears you really don't want to add gas until you are just passing the engagement point (meaning the clutch is just about fully out).
      3. It's normal for a manual.
      4. To engage first, it should be fully out by 4 MPH (this will vary by car, but that is about the right speed in the 2014 Si). Between gears it should be quick, but the 1-2 shift can be a bit slower to make it a smoother transition.
      5. The Si actually takes much longer than most manual cars for the revs to drop when you push in the clutch.
      6. It's technically riding the clutch, but I explained the 1-2 shift in the video and how I add a small amount of gas before the clutch is fully released to make it smoother.
      All I can really say is to watch my feet to get a feel for how long it should take you to release the clutch in various scenarios. The pedal view is there for a reason.

      symawd how about when going around a turn, for example, if i am driving in in 4th gear at approximately 35mph and i have to make a left turn which i know i will have to take at around 18-20 mph, if i drop down to third gear do i HAVE to blip the gas pedal before releasing the clutch to make it a smooth shift? ive asked some people and they say all you have to do is balance the gas and clutch but when i try to do that it jerks forward

    • @symawd
      @symawd  10 лет назад +1

      Rajiv Rao Yes, for it to be smooth, you need to rev match, ideally before the turn.

      3. When you are on a parking lot (whenever you drive slowly) and you want to let off your gas pedal: press the clutch pedal and release the gas simultaneously (press the clutch a little earlier to disengage the engine from the transmission) to avoid that "engine braking".

    • @tillman40
      @tillman40 10 лет назад

      the gas pedal is your friend. For performance driving, look up speed shifting techniques to raise your skill level. Once you are at a high level you can actually shift without the clutch. The worst thing you can do is ride the clutch..not fully releasing..
      The car jerks forward probably because you are not giving it enough gas. You will notice this more in cars that do not have a lot of horsepower

    One of the best video camera teching so far.But there must be some more ways to explain so i could understand.for an example 1,2,3,4,5,6, gear horsepower do this. e.g 1 gear go faster or 6 gear faster or stronger ,when you go up hill or downhill. secondly every time when you change gear just do this something of like that .thanks Teacher you are awesome.

    I'm learning to drive manual on a 2009 MINI. At first, I thought I wasn't paying enough attention to feel for the bite point on my clutch. After 3 months of driving it daily, I'm starting to think there may be a problem that needs to be serviced. I get very, very little feedback from the clutch pedal. Throughout the entire release, the pressure against my foot feels exactly the same and I find myself guessing where the bite point is.

      Daniel Lee I leave it in first, but if I go below 4 MPH, my car would stall, so I then coast the rest of the way into the space with the clutch in, but I still keep it in first in case I need to let the clutch back out and pull up further.

    I have a question for your statement on 7:51. So if I'm coming up to a red light and I put my car in neutral and the light becomes green again can't I just rev match to get back into gear and roll on? Why is it considered "not safe"? Also, isn't it better to stop with just your brakes than to stop with brakes and transmission? After all it's much easier and cheaper to do a brake job than a transmission repair.

    • @symawd
      @symawd  9 лет назад

      +Jacky D It's not as safe because it takes longer to rev match into a gear in case of an emergency vs. already being in gear.

    If you mean go past red line, yes, but most cars have a rev limiter to prevent that. Now if you mis-shift to too low of a gear, it will go past red line and that is bad.

    Hi.I just got my driver license 1 month ago and now it's a little difference between driving school and my driving style.I learned to change gears at 2000+ RPMs and i never changed gears over 2200 RPMs.The instructor teached me to let go the clutch without giving gas at all and the gear changes were not too smooth.Now i go over 3500-4000 RPMs sometimes in 1st gear and when i let go the clutch in 2nd the car stall but i'm pressing the gas pedal.Should i need to give more gas?

  • @ormanmarvin
    @ormanmarvin 9 лет назад

    First of all, great video. Now, i have two questions.
    1. If you want to go very slowly in 1st gear, not fast enough to let of the clutch, but you also dont want to stall, you wanna go very slow but at a steady speed. Like if you're trying to drive into a very tight parking spot but carefully not hitting the cars in between. Do you keep the clutch in the engagement point while adding a little gas, or just simply hold it in engagement point without gas?
    2. You mentioned that you want to add just a little bit of gas when shifting to 2nd to get going smoothly. But when shifting to 3rd and up, do you release the clutch fully first then add gas or do you also add a bit of gas like you would when shifting to 2nd? Or does that fully depend on whether you want to go faster or just simply keep rolling in a steady speed?

    • @symawd
      @symawd  9 лет назад

      Marvin Namro
      1. You can do what I showed at the end of the video for reversing, but do it in first obviously to go forward.
      2. You're pretty much safe to start adding gas once you pass the engagement point.

    • @ormanmarvin
      @ormanmarvin 9 лет назад

      symawd Thank you for your answers!
      I have another question also, when you are approaching a turn and about to downshift, it's gonna give you a little bump forward when releasing the clutch if you do not rev match if i got it all correct. But if you're not intending to rev match, should you release the clutch before the turn or after the turn, since you wouldn't want your car to launch forward in the middle of a turn.

    • @symawd
      @symawd  9 лет назад

      Marvin Namro Before the turn. You should always be in gear during a turn.

    What do you think about pump starting? Wherein you rev the car with the clutch in when stopped to raise the engine RPMs, let off the throttle and dump the clutch to get going? It's certainly more time consuming, but the guy that told me about this said it's better than riding the clutch to start... at least sometimes

  • @InterventionBeast420
    @InterventionBeast420 5 лет назад +2

    do you have to rev match sequentially? Like if im approaching a turn in 4th gear, can i just brake in 4th then clutch in and continue to brake then rev match into 2nd before the turn?

      SIl V If the RPMs don't rise or quickly drop after a rev match down shift, it means you did it correctly. It takes some practice. Don't worry about skipping gears, there's really no need for it, I was just showing that you are not required to shift in order if you don't want to.

    Ive noticed on a few of this videos that the drivers go to the next gear AS theyre pressing down on the clutch, usually by the time the floor the clutch pedal theyre already on the next gear.
    My question is... Is this safe for ur car???
    The way i shift is i press the clutch until is all the way in THEN while its pressed in do the gear change then let the clutch out... This makes it for slower gear change.
    I appreciate everyones help if you can comment

    • @symawd
      @symawd  10 лет назад +1

      Chris_6 The clutch must be fully in before you attempt to put it into the next gear. People usually pull it out of the current gear as they press the clutch in and only put it into the next gear when the clutch is fully depressed.

    • @Euronius
      @Euronius 9 лет назад

      Bruce A Matthews The engagement point is usually when the car starts shaking a little and you "feel" it's about to stall. With practice you'll find it.
      If you can't, then release the clutch about 25% and then start giving it some gas while still releasing the clutch. You'll get it eventually. Practice makes perfect.

    Hey man I have a question for you if you don't mind...
    I used to own a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse 5 speed. When driving that car, in order to properly shift i would have to press down the clutch pretty much all the way down, change the gear, then when letting go of the clutch, I would have to start pressing on the gas; Not greatly put i would have to step on it or else it would jerk I believe.
    Now, I just bought a brand new civic si sedan! And I am completely in love with this car from top to bottom. However, changing gears feels alot different in this car. After looking at the video, I couldn't tell if everytime you shift, you press the clutch all the way down or do you lightly press against it in order to shift. As well as the gas, it seems you're hardly pressing on the gas as well. Driving it around, Ive noticed at times when I went to change gears, I step on the clutch just like i would my old eclipse but the engine revs like crazy sometimes. Ive tried not being heavy on the gas as i know that can cause the car to rev. I just wanted to know how much you press on the clutch and the gas pedal everytime you change gears because it sure feels a lot different than my eclipse! In a good way however! lol
    Please, anything you got that helps would be greatly appreciated!

    I think I understand how to do this now, but I need to work on it first. I thought I needed to slowly pull off the clutch until it was fully released, but you're basically waiting for some kind of squeeze an THEN let go of the clutch (while pressing gas) Correct??

    • @symawd
      @symawd  8 лет назад +1

      +CH7 You want to release it slowly/ briefly pause at the engagement point until the car is up to an appropriate speed to let it fully out (4 MPH in the case of the Civic Si).

      every car got a diffrent engagement or bite point on the clutch. You release the clutch slowly til you reach the bite point where the car shakes or starts to move abit. When you reach that point you gonna stop the release of clutch otherwise you stall... when the car is moving you can let out the clutch ( after being on the bite point for a few sec) the let out the clutch. Also you need to give abit of gas when you reach bite point.

      @Euronius 9 лет назад

      Jonathan DiLego Every car has a different "feel" to it, so you have to find your car's sweet spot (engagement point).
      With experience you'll find it. Just start releasing the clutch slowly, and when you feel the car shaking a little and is about to stall, start giving it some gas slowly.

    A lot of people press the gas pedal before releasing the clutch to the engagement point, but you first release the clutch to the engagement point and then give a little bit of gas! So, in your opinion, which is the best method? By the way, great video!!

    • @symawd
      @symawd  10 лет назад

      Diego Aguilar Giving it gas first is usually recommended for beginners so that if you pass the engagement point the car is less likely to stall. However, if you know where the engagement point is (the reason why I show how to find it without gas), there is no need to add gas until you are there.
      Now, if you are launching your car (which a beginner shouldn't be doing), you'll obviously be giving it gas first so that you can release the clutch quicker.
