The Railway Roundabout films are reminder of the fact that far too many railway lines were closed across Britain.

Lovely footage. Sod the carbon footprint this was altogether a more environmentally friendly way of getting around and of having holidays than stinky planes

Thanks for this reminder of a wonderful family holiday in a camping cosarch in North Wales in about 1950. I think the name of the station was Abererch.

We stayed in such a place at Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - a place which, in later years, was transformed into Aidensfield for the TV series Heartbeat and, more recently, Hogsmeade for Harry Potter!

Stayed at Gara Bridge in a Camping Coach nearly every year until 1959. Have a photograph of me sitting on 2-6-2T engine 5533 which does not now seem to exist.

      Were the groups segregated boys/girls?

Felice Graziano I was only 5 at the time and we were in a family group. There were always family groups when we were there.

How did the system work? Were the coaches ever part of the train? How were the coaches equipped - beds, restrooms, kitchenettes, etc.? Did a family "rent" part of a coach to use for their vacation? I find this idea to be fascinating, but this video provides very little info. Would love to hear/read more of your experiences!

I would have absolutely loved that as a kid, camping & steam trains what more could you want.

I would have gone. I would count how many panniers I see for the records. As an adult afterwards, I would join a preservation society. #60splans

You say that, but nowadays we can play with trains as in we can change a pannier to have the power of a 9F and muck about that way, or create our dream railway

Steven van Zuijdam That is true! Simulators are one miracle of the PC Age, we can recreate what’s long lost, memories or even do what would likely be impossible for us to achieve in reality!

Those lads are in awe by a pannier, i think that if a 9F going up a steep bank with a heavy goods train with flood their trousers.

1950s kids: "wow a locomotive! Swell!"
2020s kids: "oh, another iPhone, yawn"

To be fair, a lot of 2020s kids would think the steam engine was pretty cool too.

    0:56 Is that a 57xx or a 94xx?

    • @zerosen1972

I believe it's a 57xx. The 94xx was larger and it had its Pannier tanks further back. It's pretty easy to get them confused though! :)
