I got grand Budapest hotel. The packaging is so beautiful it was calling my name.
On the Waterfront is a MUST! One of the best classics of all time.
Good pickups can’t go wrong with Jimmy Stewart👍
i still collect criterion dvds because that's the easiest format for me to collect for
Awesome pickups, Ken! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Blow Out 4K and I hope you get that Blood Simple editor soon. It is so good!
I think I'm going to hit a local store this weekend, but Criterion on DVD is still a great experience to me. Picked up recently Contempt (out of print), Cat People (1942), The Virgin Spring and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs. My Blu-ray player upscales to 4k so aside from being great films they look outstanding on the OLED TV. What a great time we live in as film collectors!
Cat People!! 🖤
blow out is great of course BUT Destry rides again is the gem here! one of my fav westerns
6:22 You broke my heart. I LOVE Wes Anderson movies!
I agree Larry Wes Anderson is one of the greats.
There isn't any Barnes & Noble store anywhere near here, so I placed an order through their website, which hadn't really moved at all until today, and now it's at my post office all of a sudden.
I found a DVD copy of Le Samourai at a thrift store yesterday. Even at 50 cents I wasn’t even tempted.
My Barnes and Noble location has reduced their Criterion Collection real estate to one section of a wall. They hardly had anything. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING
The Easton/Columbus location had a complete makeover of the movie and music section that was unrecognizable. The Criterion movies were all on one section of a wall. But I did find one movie I wanted, Eve's Bayou.
Destry Rides Again is a fantastic western. Marlene Dietrich is one of all time favorite actors! I highly recommend the Dietrich / von Sternberg set btw.
if the DVD version on criterion is significantly cheaper than its blu ray then I gotta do it depending on the movie but generally blu ray is the way to go for sure.
I'll be interested to hear your take on Blow Out. I've seen it and I have to admit it I don't love it as much as most people. I thought it was good but I wasn't blown away by it, so to speak. 😁
As for Tarkovsky, I know I've said this before but I would still recommend you watch Solaris first as a more accessible introduction to his filmography. I like Stalker but I'm pretty sure it's what you young 'uns refer to as a slow burn.
Kudos for getting Blow Out - your best pick up this day by far, imo. Bumber about Blood Simple. If you don't have The Innocents (1961) - it's an absolute must have and one of the greatest black and white films of all time.
The fact that I own Antichrist and noticed it in the video and got immediate chills...then it falls, creeped me out immensely.
that Godzilla packaging sucks, I hear that the glue holding the sleeves loosens and the discs slide causing them to have glue residue on them and just the dang size of it makes it a pain to store
Great snags old bean! I’m with ya though. We gotta start watching these movies!!
Me: Walks into the store with a list.
Ten minutes later: Just give me one of everything, please.
Kidding, of course. Kinda.
I’d be a lot more accepting of digipacks/books if they were manufactured in the same height and depth dimensions as a standard Blu-ray case. Them being taller and sticking out from my shelves really irks my little OCD collector ticks.
Did you ask the staff to check and see if they had any additional copies of Blood Simple in their store room and report the damaged case? Squeaky wheels get greased. That copy has probably been picked up and rejected ten times over and no one is saying anything, so it sits there with nothing being put out to replace it.
So far I’ve ordered the Bruce Lee Collection. I went through Amazon. Same price but I got an $10 off coupon in addition to try one of their hub lockers drop off locations so, why not? With tax it came to under $56, I think.
It's called, On The Waterfront and it's once of the best movies of all time. Watch it ASAP. "It was you Charlie."
Every time they announce a barnes and noble sale , I check to see if the flights are cheap, they never are
Got "Stalker" as well, still trying to get into the right mind spot to put this on. I've seen "Solaris" and I really liked it, but oh boy, Tarkovski is not in a rush to get anywhere. Watching "Solaris" felt like forever.
I have a problem with digipacks. While I admit, they do look cool, I also really love the Criterion case and my OCD is really happy how lined up everything is and digipacks are breaking the line up a bit. Also the problem with them is that they are very easy to damage. I have to order my Criterions from abroad and with digipacks there is a lot of chance they will arrived not in perfect condition.
Blow out is a really fun time. I don't know anything about destry or the fugitive kind.
Get House!! One of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen haha 😂
picked up Police Story/Police Story 2 from the Criterion Collection... Looking forward to your review on "Blow Out"
Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion is a must have Criterion
Wassup ken great video love this time of year for some criterions haha. Yeah I recommend this dvd criterion called jigoku man crazy 60s jh. Seen it last year no blu ray for it I think. Keep up the good work.
how.......can you not have The Graduate? why it's not on 4k yet is another outrage! lol
My grabs came from Amazon. Lost highway, citizen kane, night of the living dead, menace ii society 4ks night of the hunter blu.
Grabbed the French dispatch from best buy, haven't seen that one yet though.
I got Raging Bull, Shaft, and Sound of Metal. Preordered Malcolm X and Wall E.
I need to pick up Stalker.
I picked up lost highway, mulholland drive, blow out, and night of the living dead. Blow up was just ok . The others were amazing.
I’m in UK so can’t buy from Barnes and Noble but I did nab Power of the Dog 4k at 50% off from Amazon along with Daisies also got WallE and Malcolm X on order.
I'm in the UK and interested in the movies generally, can't afford Criterion just yet though. First I'll buy dvds of the films, then perhaps buy the Criterion version. For example, Marriage Story, Raging Bull, and even Armageddon I like. How have you found Criterion collecting and where do you buy from?
@@sgist7824 I really enjoy the Criterion collection I buy mainly from Amazon US also in the Uk, HMV and Amazon UK. I check if a title has a planned Uk release if so I wait for that otherwise I get the US release.
@@southendonseaarts Thank you , what are your fave Criteriions so far?
If you love Jimmy Stewart, you definitely have to pick up 'Philadelphia Story' opposite Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, for which he won his one and only Oscar...
Slacker is really good i bought it last sale. Great haul overall bro 😎👍
OK I’m one of those weird ones, I buy the Blu-ray and I buy the DVD because the Blu-ray box doesn’t have a DVD in it most of the time. I do end up putting the DVD in a paper sleeve and putting it in with the Blu-ray. And I say goodbye to the empty case unless it’s got some really awesome stuff with it.
Destry Rides Again is such a great film!
I’ve had a few Tarkovsky titles in my collection since last Christmas, haven’t touched any of them
Nice hunt. I'm debating importing the 4K pf princess bride
Sweet Smell of Success ..and... Blow Out ... are a couple of the greatest films ever made. SMOS should be getting a 4K soon.
Great pick ups Ken! Yesterday at my local Barnes and Noble I picked up Pans Labyrinth, Seven Samurai on BluRay (replacing my old DVD copy) and the Lone Wolf and Cub box set. Also picked up Deep Red 4K from Arrow since their 50% off right now too. Hope you get your copy of Blood Simple soon, I have that in my collection
I prefer the Solaris remake to the original. I know, blasphemy, remakes are usually shit, but in this case, I adore the soderbergh version. Hope it gets a 4k someday.
I found Tootsie with criterion that had a busted case like really really busted case and they told me they could not give me any discount. I was so sad I would love the upgrade
Great haul destry rides again see it many times seen all james steward movies I got eves bayou seen blowout slowed down on movies got too many I haven't watched that I own but I have seen them before I hot them don't rewatch much
Ken, I usually message you on IG, as I watch all my RUclips videos on my tv, which I do not know how to get to the comment section on there, I am sure it is easy, but I would still have to use the remote to type.. not a fan of that.. Anyway, I will make a point to comment here using the PC after watching the videos.. that all being said, I just watched your trip to B&N, now as a LONG time (like laserdisc times) movie collector, I do not understand your buying patterns at all, and I am trying, ok so you did not want to spend 125 for the Godzilla set, which you stated you really want and it has been the same one there for 2 years, you should have grabbed that one and walked out with just that, because after you buy it, you may never see another one there again!!! BUT, you also saw Devil in a blue dress or red dress.. now I know Denzel was one of the reasons you started collecting, but that did not make it to the car.. The blood simple? was damaged, I get that, but did you ask if they had another one there by chance, looks like they had one copy of most of the movies there... which means there could be more in understock or the back room there... I would have asked. The movies you buy, many you say you have not seen, and that your criterion collection has many still sealed, now I am NOT a Criterion collector at all, as those movies there is just barley any titles I have interest in, BUT there are a few, you mentioned Wes Anderson, Now one of the movies I LOVE was Rushmore, which you have not seen and did not buy, that one I do have because I LOVE it, I tried his next film and next film and so on, but they got worse and worse and boring to me, just the exact opposite of your approach there, but does not mean I am right at all, I also want Raging Bull because it is Raging bull.. I suggest you WATCH all these movies you pick up before you BUY them, as blind buys are 2-3 bucks are not bad either way, you hate it cheap rental, you love it, into the collection... BUT 25 dollar blind buys are TOUGH to keep up with! I wish I had seen you in the car with that Godzilla because the longer you wait on something like that, then it goes, and you kick yourself forever that you never got it when you could!!! And you bet your a** I have done that many many times! but a rough estimate those 5 you got, would have been the same or more than that Godzilla set, which you DO seem to really want! Love the videos, love learning about movies that I have never heard of and the reviews of titles I really want, right now that is Christmas Vacation and Planes trains and automobiles on 4K, and you did the Vacation review, of course I had to take a shot at the contest where your giving one away, and waiting that out to see if I actually win it, but just my thoughts on this video, and believe me, it does not mean I am right, just my own thoughts.. keep up the good work on the show, and come Feb whatever they offer for the Rocky 4k movies to buy, I am getting it, a limited set for 500 bucks with some extras and a special box, I am getting it, 1000 for the 6 movies and more special packing and all that, I am getting it, no debate no nothing! Love the show, keep doing it as much as you do!
I still need to get the Night of the Living Dead 4K. I just wish it had HDR....
Was gonna take part in this Sale, but my region free player I ordered doesn’t work
Great picks, Ken 👍 I’m not sure if this is “RUclips Approved,” 😳 but I have pristine copies of “House” and “My Own Private Idaho” that I’d be happy to either trade with you, or let go for a song (I’m partial to Rock ‘n Roll 😉)
Some of those movies on marked up so high $50 for devil in the blue lol, Even with the 50% off it’s still more expensive than other stores!!!
That's not true. Criterion regulates retail prices pretty well. You'll pretty much never see one of their titles below 50% MSRP, including Devil in a Blue Dress.
@@mv28 I respectfully disagree with you Barnes & Noble‘s is way more expensive than every other retailer I’ve ever been to.
@@michaeldietz2648 That's true, generally speaking, but the sticker price they are basing their discount on is indeed Criterion's MSRP. Their titles never sell for less than 50% of that price.
I only buy criterion dvd if that is the only way to own the film from criterion. My personal goal is own all of the criterion and there are quite a few films only available on dvd with in the collection. Thankfully it seems that they are going back and upgrading some of the films from dvd to bluray!
Nice pickups! Aside from B&N sales, Criterion does do their flash sales. Hoping to make it in soon. Narrowed my list down already, but will see if I atick to it.
If you do decide to pick up Paris, Texas, there’s a German Blu-ray with a much better transfer (it’s region B, but it will play in Panasonic players via the “top menu” trick). I sold my Criterion BD after I upgraded.
You never saw Blow Out??????!
I personally didn’t love Blood Simple but it’s nice to see someone so passionate about picking it up LOL!
You convinced me to get Blood Simple last week so it's funny you had this unfortunate circumstance.
Slacker was the film the inspired Kevin Smith to write and direct Clerks. Also, that Mallrats edition from Arrow is worth the price even without a slip. =)
You got Slacker? Interesting. Yea I recommend Before Trilogy. You and your wife might really like those. They're so deep and beautiful. There are only two movies I give 10/10 to. Whiplash and The Before Trilogy. There are no flaws to them. The only rare complaint I have ever seen on the Before Trilogy is that they're boring. If you don't like meaningful and deep relatable conversations and character driven movies then yeah, they're boring I guess. But not to me.
I picked up 30 this time around... Financial circumstances caused me to miss the July sale but I didn't miss this one Ken :)
How do you not have the Godzilla box set?
There are like 15 movies in there
Post videos on Blu-ray players that are available in the US. Sony and Panasonic have pulled out. Phillips and some LG. Low end stuff. That’s it here. No high end stuff. The LG I bought it 4 years ago. It has one that plays all discs worldwide. No available in America. Do it on what’s available here in the US.
Blow Out is great! Hope you get your hands on Blood Simple soon. That’s a great Coen brothers movie. Nice haul Ken
Brando? Last tango in Paris… haha
Awesome Pick Ups Destry Rides Again Is A Pretty Good Western I Got That Last Year November Sale. I Got Few Criterion I'm Eyeballing To Maybe Pick Up This Sale But Don't Know If I'll Pull The Trigger Yet. Gotta See What Maybe Goes Onsale Later In Actual Black Friday Week Before I Go Crazy On Criterion.
Ken watch, The Teahouse of The August Moon. Marlon brando plays a Japanese guy haha.
I pulled the trigger also and grabbed All That Jazz and Being There on blu. Also, the talking and rambling are part of the ride or we'd watch you on mute, lol.
Got 4K's this time around....Blow Out, Raging Bull, Lost Highway and Night of the Living Dead.
I just can't get over the price tag for Criterion... Especially in Canada
Great Criterion hunt Ken! For me, I realize that besides the few titles I have Criterion is not for me. Not my genre's.
You’re funny, Ken.
A solid dozen or two of the items shown above will be great - when they get available on 4K, that is.
Blu-rays, though anymore? Nope, a pure waste of time and money. (Just like steelbooks.)
Meanwhile, that dumb animal flick with Kate Hepburn is one of superstar Cary Grant's most boring duds.
And Wes Anderson should've gone into the real estate biz - as a director he's awful.
My faves (and must buys in the 4k future) of those shown by Ken that I don't have yet include:
True Romance, Night Living Dead, Meaning Of Life, Dirty Dancing, Bicycle Thieves, Chaplins,
Girl Can't Help It, High Sierra, Happened One Night, Great Dictator, My Man Godfrey, Smell Of Success,
Raging Bull, Destry, Slacker, Stagecoach, and War Of The Worlds.
Great video and great pick ups mate gaz
just saw your full name for mailing, are you related to Eddie Vedder? lmao
Quick question, your Blow Out copy has a 30% off sticker on it, so did they combine the two discounts? I highly doubt it though! Fugitive Kind is not Western, it's a very powerful drama (bunch of power acting profiles). Oh, BTW, I could be wrong but TARKOVSKY may not be your cup of tea. If you really wanna venture into his realm, try Ivan’s Childhood first. If you like it, let me know and I will be your shepherd :P
For me, many of the titles they put out, I am not interested in. It seems that with DVD and Blu-Ray they put out more mainstream titles, like Armageddon and The Rock.
Are you in Louisville?
At some point? I now believe this is a criterion paid advertising 🙄
Power of the dog it on my TOP list of the Most boring movie I ever saw
So you like Princess bride, but Paris Texas doesn't resonate with you? You should have bought some crayons and a coloring book.
How can you hate on Princess Bride? Lol
I actually haven't seen it, just giving you a hard time. Stalker is brilliant however as are all Tarkovskys movies, sort of moving paintings. And as far as Paris Texas, I love Nastassja Kinski and always have I collect all her stuff. She's a classic beauty!!
@@timothytouhey8682 I understand that, but maybe watch Princess Bride before you critique my film tastes. I've at least seen them both.
who in the world is paying full price for these things? I mean 40 or 50 bucks for one movie, no slipcover, a lame thick transparent case, where is the value exactly?
People who aren’t broke like you 😂😂😂
The only one I want is blowout 4k but my wife won't let me sad face.
It is my birthday month but sad thing is just lost my job because of my back injury so not a fun month for me
It just kills me that the regular price on those are 39.95 and 49.95. MAYBE 30 bucks, but IMO the whole prestige of those is way overpriced. There is no Criterion release that temps me, even at half-price.
who buys any physical media anymore period haha. naw but i loved my criterion movies. im traveling so i cant collect anymore.
yo anti christ is cringeeeeeeeeee
