@@HH-hd7nd I actually agree and was just turning a phrase. The longer explanation is that Joyce displays inherent empathy even toward those that initially display none or even antipathy (just about the only person she instantly dislikes is Snyder.) We see it best with Spike in "Lover's Walk" but her response to Faith is inherently supportive (until the whole, 'tried to murder her daughter' thing) and the reveal that Dawn isn't her 'real' daughter is met with mostly with confusion, not antipathy (as it was with Buffy.) Part of the reason 'Gingerbread' works so well is that there's no doubt that Joyce would be galvanized by actually seeing the carnage of Sunnydale. It's pretty clear that with Xander and Willow's homelifes being abusive and neglectful, respectively, that Joyce is a surrogate mother to all the Scoobies.
(Potentially minor-ish spoilers because I can't remember how much of William's backstory has been revealed yet)
And you can't tell me that's not connected to why Spike is so attached to her, considering how much he loved (and must miss) his own mother.

Buffy's speech taking down the council is so so satisfying! They so had it coming. And she did it so well!!!
Every scene with Joyce and Spike together have to be amongst the best in the series. Always a pleasure to watch and their chemistry is perfect.
My favorite part of that scene is Dawn her rolling her eyes as they start going on about "Passions." Classic teen move.
I only wish there were more of them, this is one of my favorite moments.
I love the fact, that this was not only the moment that Buffy stepped forward and took control of her life, but every member of the Scooby Gang, stepped up and took control over their existence.

Buffy is SUCH a good person that even when she's making her big speech she thinks of Giles's livelihood and doesn't even think to give herself a salary too 😭😭😭
Receiving a salary would put her in a depending position versus the Couincil.

This is one of my favorite Buffyverse episodes! Spike and Joyce bonding over a soap opera they watch. Buffy trusting Spike to protect her family. The "what's your relationship" confusion with Willow and Tara. Tara's wonderful line about the British being kinder than "normal" people. Glory in Buffy's house. That takedown of the Watchers Council, followed by that sudden shock of "She's a god." "Oh." Amazing episode!

Buffy trusting Spike is one of the lessons few people in life understand until it is too late:
sometime you must trust someone because the alternative is just worse in any way possible.
Glory is, by far, my favorite "Big Bad" so far in the series. The fact that she's a god explains her superior and narcissistic attitude towards the world, and I just LOVE how Clare Kramer plays the role. Not only is Glory insanely scary and powerful...she's also fun and has a GREAT fashion sense. ;-)
At the time, I don't think I really got the joke: Hellgod in the form of a nutso mall chick. Now I love it.

"How is Buffy supposed to fight a god?" An excellent question that comes in everybodys mind at this point.
The Council, well, someone mentioned that the 18th birthday test was designt to kill off the slayers before they get to much independent from them. Maybe also to avoid that one watcher gets to much influence for so long about the livin' weapon a slayer is and becomes powerhungry like Ms. Post.
And i think the test on the Scoobies was also a try to figure out how that so far unique Slayerette Support Squad could be so successful and if it is a possible blueprint for the future for their work, especially cause the so far common way of the Counsil failed at Faith.
The Watchers Council has had a perfect setup for centuries, maybe millenia. They identify and train potential slayers in order to have control over them, and if a slayer, like Buffy, pops up somewhere else, they assign her a watcher who was also taught by them, plus they have the greatest library of supernatural information in the world so the slayer needs to go to them for something unusual like Glory. Not to mention, that stupid test they did on Buffy when she turned 18 - the perfect age when a slayer might start resisting their control, so they set up a test that will probably kill most slayers, and then a younger slayer arises who will trust them and follow their directions.
Then comes Buffy, a surprise slayer who does things her own way and who has a watcher that cares about her and helps her. The Council set up an impossible test for her 18th birthday and she survived it, and when they sent Wesley as her watcher, she kicked them out of her life and kept Giles. She finally needs their help with Glory and they see it as a way to get her back under their control, but Buffy ends up seeing through their whole setup and smacks them down with this perfect speech (yay!). So now Travers and the rest of them are under HER control... until she's finally killed. Then, and I'd bet money on this, they'd have Faith killed in prison and regain their control by being there when the next slayer rises. And this system will continue for as long as there are slayers unless something happens to change it, and I think that sucks.

Not quite true. If you know the show, you know that one part (cant say which one cause of spoilers) isnt true. But your general desctiption is pretty much spot on.
I like how Buffy was all gased up after putting the council at its place and it all goes away with one sentence "she is a god"
The soap that Spike and Joyce watch, Passions, was a real show. It's one of the weirder soaps. They mentioned Timmy, a doll who was brought to life by a witch.

well, among other things, buffy did kill the snake that glory sent to find the key. buffy does seem to be protecting the key.

Buffy's speech at the end is her fully realizing herself as a Slayer and the power she wields, especially after the council, who are worthless without her. Plus, the twist: Glory is a God!

The ending moment is good for reactions, but it is also interesting to see how many reaction viewers are more confused than shocked. SoFie seemed a bit of both, yet still seemed more confused than shocked at first.
One of Buffy's most badass moments is the ending scene while talking to The Watchers Council. I was a bit disappointed to not see Buffy throwing the sword at Nigel.
you're not alone - i got to watch this season when it was being broadcast, and i for sure thought they were going to reveal that Glory was another Slayer - my theory was that she had died briefly like Buffy and somehow been resurrected and become immortal.
but, a god's cool, too :)

Buffy did what every American needs to do. Put the "Leaders" in check and make them see reality. I love this episode. And listen, Glory says "If". She doesn't know right now.

Contains one of the greatest scenes in the whole show when Buffy had the showdown with The Council. She just has no time for their stuck up English nonsense, and the arrogant Quentin Travers, and tells them who holds the real power. The sword throwing is excellent. We of course get the reveal about who Glory really is, and that this Big Bad is somewhat different from what they have faced before. S5 just gets better and better. A great feeling when Travers has to accept Buffy's terms.
If you gotta write a thesis... choose wisely - I can't fault one on Spike
Our Buffy has grow up! Yep Giles is proud of her but we all certainly are :)
She is fantastic, a true heroine and a very good friend, sister and daughter (also for Giles) and a strong, young woman who with her example know inspire both boys and girls.

Xander has been in the game since he was sixteen, starting maybe six months after Buffy. He was thrown in the deep end, one of his best friends was murdered, and he's been a loyal soldier ever since. Despite his personal flaws, he is, in my opinion, the bravest, most insightful, and quite possibly the luckiest of the Scoobies.

Ah yes I been waiting for you to react to this episode!!! One of the most iconic moments in the show’s history was definitely the power speech just absolutely legendary stuff.
The one thing that I didn't understand is why didn't Buffy negotiate a pay for herself in this as well? It's one of the matters that always bugged me...
Yeah I think it was a deliberate plot hole to set up one of the themes of the next season. I think they just let it slide in order to prioritize what they wanted to do thematically

Glory is a god, a really badass one. This is Buffy's biggest challenge yet. I feel she's not something you just chop off...
And it also explains why Glory hasn't killed her yet. Even until now, even though Glory threatened her… she gave Buffy the option to 'hand over' the key to before she kills everyone. She could, ofc she doesn't care.
That was really interesting to me, she gave her the option. Angelus would have made a slaughter, however Glory was even stronger and more powerful and TRIED to play smarter.

The references to "Passions" are so much funnier if you know that Passions was a real soap opera with supernatural elements... and if you carry the deep shame of having actually watched it, and you actually KNOW that Timmy was a doll...

Glory "is" a Slayer, in the sense that Glory is the Slayer half of Buffy minus humanity, while Dawn is the normal girl half of Buffy minus the Slayer power.
The Replacement showed you what one of the main themes of this season is.

Angelus kinda threatened to kill Joyce by leaving a hand drawn picture of her for Buffy. It wasn't said in words but it was definitely a threat.

that's the thing I don't understand: why doesn't the council pay the slayer? I mean she has a high-risk job, it's nearly impossible for her to have a normal job and her slayer duties, they pay for the watchers... Give her her hard-earned money!
There was a discussion on another reaction that said if they paid her, the Council would have power over her, which she doesn't want.

All of these years, and I still dislike the Council intently.
The thing about this episode is everything you said about the counsel during this reaction, became a thing that was talked about after this episode aired.
This episode is what helped mold the thinking you have today, before this episode, the idea that anyone, especially a girl would do this, was not something that truly existed.
There was no back talking perceived power.
When people talk about the reach and importance of BtVs, this is one of the things/episodes, they are speaking about.
This was when we became "woke"
So you think "grown-ups" don't know more than you about anything? Good luck with that world-view, think you need a bit of growing-up, too...as for the council - yes, Buffy does need what they know, because neither she nor Giles nor the scoobies do know, Treat her as a child? No, that's wrong, but maybe she could use the vast resources of the council from time to time? Just saying...
I think you missed the obvious fact that Sofie is an adult herself. If you consider it “grown-up” to think that you are wiser or more knowledable than those who are not as old or mature as you are…. Then I’m afraid you’re the one that’s misled in your beliefs, my friend.
If the Council had not agreed to the terms and conditions Buffy laid out for them, it wouldn’t have phased her. She would have found the information some other way. She’s the Slayer. The one that actively does what she needs to do to get what she wants or needs. It is them that need her because they can’t do that. They can’t fight that battle without a Slayer. And she is absolutely right - they sought her out to get her back on their side and specifically under their control. And she accepts the former only. Not the latter. It’s either they’re working with her on equal footing or they’re not working together at all. She is the law.

That's a very emotional way to put it, but yes, there are things adults know the younger generation doesn't. Doesn't apply to this episode, though. The problem was their attitude, and the system they had in place off treating the slayer like a 'tool'

Actually, all the council tells Buffy is that Glory is a god. They don't tell her anything really helpful like how to fight her. Buffy gets all the info she needs without them. She really didn't need the patriarchy's help or their "grown up" knowledge because they really didn't have any.
