Season 6 is my favorite too, then season 5. I watched these seasons only like 2012. I watched seasons 1-4 when they aired and because of that I will forever remember season 2. I think it is the biggest accomplishment for the show. Going from peanut budget new show with goofy monster of the week episodes to one of the most tragic arcs ever, with insanely good performances. The overall season is not at the top because it lack consistency and have some poor episodes.

Jonathan and Whats-his-face (Tucker's brother) are mostly LARPing - that is, live-action role playing the persona of a super-villain (or arch nemesisses of the Slayer). Theft, kidnapping, even fantasy-style harm (like to the museum guard) can be excused, in their minds, because they don't see it as real, with actual consequences. When there are, or threaten to be, they pull back and want to make it right.
Warren, on the other hand, is more of a narcissist, closer to a sociopath, and is taking the others along for the ride. He can manipulate them, and they're allowing themselves to be led. They are an interesting Trio.

I wouldn't say most fans hate season 6, there's just some things that happen that are too much for a lot of people, and those with the least maturity think "I don't like seeing this happen" as "This happening is bad writing." I really love this season. It might not be as consistently incredible as season 5 or have the highs and heartbreak of season 2, but it has its own identity of adult struggles, darkness, thorough character exploration, and risky storytelling. We get the best musical episode of all time, the monkey's paw of the Bike ship, we get to see all the characters in ways we never really saw them before, and sometimes it's not very pretty. It's not perfect, and some things are unforgivable to some people, but I'm glad it exists.

I think Season 6 is the best season. I watched seasons 1-3 when it aired (being the same age as the Scoobies in the show), then didn't have TV in many years so I didn't see the following seasons until I was already 32yo. I also saw Angel when I was 32yo. I think that's why season 5 doesn't hit as hard, because I knew there are still more seasons (it's still essentially tied as the best season) and season 6 is so good because I have the connection with the characters from my highschool era but had the wisdom and experience of an adult when I saw it.
Also I like the trio much more than most because it reminds me of my friend circle that was already nostalgic to me when I watched this season.

@@juzujuzu4555 I watched the show under far from ideal circumstances. I caught an episode here and there and the last few episodes of season 7 because I wanted to see more Alyson Hannigan after American Pie, as well at least the season 4 episode where Faith fights Angel, and then I watched both shows in the heavily edited syndicated reruns on the weekends and watching season 5 live as it aired. Then I gave the show my first proper watch with all DVD box sets and my 7 disc DVD changer ready to move to the other show quickly. I don't remember if I ever saw the rerun edits of season 5 or not, but I only remember it as being incredibly impactful as a whole, regardless of knowing the show would continue, especially The Body, one of the few pieces of entertainment that's powerful enough to break me.

I like season six. We see beloved characters... not at their best. At their worst even. That, however, is part of what I like about the show in general. All (and I cannot stress that word enough) of the characters are deeply flawed. It's what makes the show interesting & meaningful. It also makes the characters more relatable because none of us are perfect either. Put any of the characters on a pedestal & disappointment will be inevitable. Or denial followed by warping everything to fit one's own narrative. Even then, one might reach a breaking point.

Here we see Buffy acting as a kind of 'sponsor' for Willow trying to cleanse the house of anything that might tempt Willow to have a relapse. We can see how frosty the Dawn/Willow relationship has now become. Interesting with Spike and Buffy in the kitchen, her addiction to him is also now critical too, as she can't seem to resist his advances. Some comedy with the Probation Inspector with the bag of weed, but again it is serious as it could lead to Buffy losing Dawn, coupled with what the Inspector sees as really strange characters living there such as Willow and Spike. The Trio now are irritating beyond endurance, and continue to make Buffy's life even more difficult. Buffy actually seems to be enjoying being invisible at this stage as she can now exploit her sexual urges and desires for Spike without getting caught. When Xander comes into the crypt we have the funny, but ridiculous scenario of Spike pretending he is exercising. We have to ask ourselves the uncomfortable question here, is Buffy exploiting Spike? Crazy I know, but this is what is actually happening here. He is being used for her own sexual gratification, with no consequences for her, interesting juxtaposition in role reversal between the two, we even see the soulless Spike being almost hurt by her attitude towards him. Comedy relief at then end with the word 'nemesis' nemesises' etc. Great conversation with Buffy and Willow at the end. A lot to unpack in this episode, hence the lengthy comment. I loved S6, but can see why many did not.

SPOILERSSSSS.... There is no question Buffy was exploiting Spike in that scene. The fact that Xander couldn't see her but she goes against her own sense of morality by 'doing' it in front of him is...
      .
      .
      .
      .

      .
      .
almost parallel to that balcony scene at the Bronze in ep 13 "Dead Things" where Spike tells her to open her eyes and watch her friends and they go at it without them noticing. 😬 It's both cringe and just plain ick to think that she could deceive them like that and not feel any shame... like, Buffy's true self WOULD feel that shame rearing its ugly head for sure if her friends found out she's been sleeping with Spike or even allowing him to exploit her like this. So this episode highlights the things that Buffy would do or maybe anyone in particular would do if they were to do things that no one would know about but gets away with it. I recall being in a discussion about what superpower most people wish they'd have if the options were between flying and invisibility, most picked the latter for this reason. Buffy seemed unhinged for simply having this ability so toying with Spike after she rejected him before that shows how some people are capable of doing things that would be unthinkable, or they would never dare do. The invisibility factor plays into her wild side. She's always tried to be a responsible, mature adult over the course of several seasons, up to this point, where she's just thrown away the whole 'trying to be a good girl, don't be naughty' rule book but this season, she's almost doing what the OTHER Slayer is most likely to do instead of her. Ironically.

I think the whole point of having such "lame" villains was to show that you don't have to be super-powered to cause a lot of damage, and the stakes don't have to be apocalyptic to be compelling. (I also think they needed a reset after S5 in terms of the power ladder... you run out of plausible candidates pretty quickly if each year's Big Bad has to outdo the previous one's in terms of sheer power.)
Opinions differ in terms of how well they pulled it off. There are parts of this season / that through-line that I really like, and parts of it that I hate with the fire of a thousand suns. I think there are a wide range of reasonable reactions. Looking forward to seeing yours!

They also killed that security guard with the freeze ray, almost drove Buffy insane in Life Serial, etc.
Just because the protagonists more or less just treat them as a nuisance, doesn't mean that's appropriate for the audience, especially since we hear them making ambitious plans and escalating in their thinking. So, sure, so far they have a lowish body count, but they've shown themselves to be incredibly reckless, and willing to kill innocent people to achieve their goals. Yes, they're losers, but they're highly creative and inventive losers with little to no moral restraint (beyond some weak objections from Jonathan). The more you think about it, the scarier that is.

It removes a lot of the glamor of adulthood and shows how difficult life can be. Do I think it pushed too far at times? Perhaps. But some of it was also the creators/production team pushing back on some things they didn't care for that I won't get into.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan Год назад +14

I feel Dawn has, many times, grounded reasons for being upset: Knowing the Scoobies and her family are acting odd and lying to her in S5, finding out why in S5, worrying about Glory, Buffy dying, Social Services, a broken arm, the person who broke it (Willow) is still living in the same house when Tara should be instead, and Buffy not caring about being invisible forever and trying to have fun in serious moments are some examples. In this episode, Dawn is calling Buffy out on what Buffy assumes is a reason to just cut loose and avoid responsibility due to her depression.
Speaking more of social services, is Buffy really the best person to be legally responsible over Dawn? I don't believe so. Not while she's depressed. Doris Kroeger is doing her job correctly considering Buffy's emotional state and actions. Also, if Buffy was frustrated at Spike for being there when social services shows up, why didn't she just give him his lighter when he asked for it aka before Doris Kroeger showed up?
So, Buffy while invisible and with Spike not aware of what's happening, throws herself at him. That's sexual assault. And she doesn't tell him, he has to figure out what's going on. Then after Xander leaves, Spike tells Buffy to get her clothes and go home. She instead gives him a blow job. The next scene we see Buffy, she is upset Spike kicked her out. How is it that Spike kicked her out considering he would either have to stop her to kick her out, or force her off him? Even if neither of these incidents are viewed as sexual assault (I personally view both of them that way) Buffy doesn't come off as a decent human being either way. I've even seen some people try to say as long as Spike does unwanted touching to her, its OK for her to do so to him. I can't get behind that because as stated about her being invisible, he doesn't initially know it's her so anything before that moment is not all right, and he later tells Buffy he's done and to gather her clothes and go; she doesn't listen and he has to kick her out. Of course Spike having done this before doesn't give Buffy permission to do so in return. He has no soul. All his positive emotions/feelings are tainted negatively. Buffy may have depression, but what she does is still wrong (just as what Spike does is wrong when he does so). And she has a soul. Therefore less of an excuse. Same with Willow when she took Tara's memory and slept with her. That's rape. And Willow also, like Buffy, has a soul.
Genuine Question (unlike the others above, which are rhetorical): Why do the characters care so much that Buffy cut her hair? It's hardly the first time. Never this short, but not something to write about in a script as if it were a plot point either way. Why she did it only the audience's knows, so to the characters why is it a big deal?

    • @tehcoolemu
      @tehcoolemu Год назад +7

I think the hair thing was mostly to lighten the tension via the absurdity of focusing on such an inconsequential detail at a serious time, and also to show how invested everyone else is in Buffy's day-to-day life even when she's not.

What’s more frightening is that the amount of equally evil, disgusting and ugly women also exist, but because women are able to hide behind the facade of being meek little victims, they get away with it far more than men do. And it’s been shown time and time again how women lie and accuse men of the same behaviour you described out of spite and maliciousness when they’re innocent, and once again, the woman gets away with it because she can use her womanhood for pity and manipulation.

I am, perhaps, less inclined than some to be fully sympathetic to Doris for "just doing her job." I've dealt with children's services from both sides--an adult (false accusations regarding my daughter) and as a child (trying to take me from my mother).
Yeah, Dawn has issues but I also see that some of them are self-inflicted.
More than once we have the following interaction
Buffy: "Let's spend some time together."
Dawn: "I'm doing this other thing instead."
Also Dawn, later: "Nobody wants to spend time with me."
So while there is some justice on her side, she's not entirely blameless herself. Like with most things, it's more complicated than that.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Gone’. May contain spoilers.
When it comes to addiction, and specifically the first stage of the recovery process, one of the worst things you can do as a supporter of a person in their recovery is to pass judgement on them for anything bad that happens. This includes accusations and jumping to conclusions without any evidence - just based on your own pre-conceptions or pre-assumptions of that person. When Willow realizes that Xander has come to verbally attack her for doing something he believes she’s doing, she immediately retaliates to him by getting defensive and then attacking back. It’s something we’ve seen her do a few times in the season so far. However, this time it’s uncalled for and she has all the right to defend herself since it certainly wasn’t her fault what has happened. As Willow said - it’s convenient to blame her because she’s the only one, to their knowledge, that messes around with magic that causes bad things to happen and Xander and Anya assumes that it is magic that is what has made Buffy invisible. And while I do understand their point of view - that it would likely be Willow that has caused Buffy’s invisibleness… given the fact she’s swore off magic and gone completely cold turkey with it in the last episode, it is extremely disrespectful and discriminatory to automatically assume it’s her doing.
It doesn’t happen very often - but this time - I’m on Willow’s side. While I don’t think she has the best way of arguing her case here - being passive-aggressive and then storming off out the door rather than communicating calmly and honestly - I think she was very right to call Xander out for being a judgemental prick. And if she knew it was Anya that originally made the suggestion to clue Xander in - she would be pissed. ‘Cause she doesn’t like Anya as it is. So she’d be less friendly than usual with her if she had found out Anya was prejudiced. She’d have some choice words for her, to be sure. What Willow did in swearing off magic for good was very difficult and very courageous considering how reliant she was on it. And she doesn’t need her fair-weather friends to come at her when she’s trying very hard to cope without it. She already feels guilty enough as it is for what happened with the car wreckage and seriously injuring Dawn. It won’t help any case to just come to that conclusion on coincidence. ‘Cause it is a coincidence that someone else is messing around with magic at the same time she’s begun recovering from an overusing and abusing of it. And it makes sense why she takes the initiative to be the one to figure out how and why and where it’s happening. She wants to clear her name. She wants to clear her name because she doesn’t want to be accused for doing something she’s entirely innocent of doing. And she doesn’t want her friends to lose faith in her efforts to kick the habit. No, I’m totally on Willow’s side for this particular situation. I believe she’s in the right to get upset about it. I just don’t believe she had the best method of doing so. But that’s totally understandable when she’s upset.
There’s no arrogance or entitlement showing here. She’s just venting her emotions because she’s chosen to do something that’s going to be a real hardship for her, and Xander and Anya, and hell… even Dawn can deal with the inconveniences and the coincidences. What’s most aggravating is how Xander’s saying how he isn’t getting mad, he isn’t blaming, he understands relapse is apart of recovery,… and yet proceeds to treat Willow as if she’s already failed at it. It is flat out passing judgement on her what he does in this scene and he doesn’t get my defence this time. She does.
When watching this episode, I feel very proud of what Willow accomplishes in being able to get through the day without being dependent on magic. Especially with what the events of the day call for her to do. She successfully exposes The Trio and clears her name in one fell swoop - without the use of any magic. And you can see that there’s instances where she’s tempted to do so… but she has the willpower to resist. She’s strong, she’s brave and she’s powerful with or without magic. But the very fact she does what she does in this episode without using it once when she has spent pretty much her entire existence since developing her magical abilities thinking she’s useless and valueless without it… I beam with pride. She’s an inspiration to recovering addicts everywhere.

I don't get how Xander is supposedly bad here. Willow has been using magic against the will of other people since she learned how to use it. She is sweet on the outside, but she has some real darkness and almost sociopathic qualities as well. She should have been gone to jail after what she has done. Xander and Anya think correctly, it's essentially magic that cause the invisibility, as the weapon was enchanted. The only other explanation in Buffyverse was already explored when they encountered Buffy.
Willow swearing to not use magic is absolutely meaningless in this context, she has no credibility whatsoever at this point. She going cold turkey also doesn't change anything in this context.
Perhaps there would have been a better way for Xander to handle things, but Willow doesn't deserve the benefit of a doubt here. Not by a longshot. I agree on the fact that she did amazingly well and I'm proud of her being able to resist the temptations. Though I think she also knew that it would be the end of her if she would continue. Which kind of lessens her achievement. Buffy would kick her out, she would lose essentially everyone. Still great achievement especially with her taking down the trio.

@@juzujuzu4555 firstly,… thank you for defending Xander. Most people don’t do that. I appreciate it even if, in this context, I don’t agree.
Secondly, it’s the fact he is her best friend and she’s actually done something really brave and hard in swearing off the magic. For Xander to just automatically assume it’s her fault what’s happened to Buffy isn’t good regardless whether she deserves the benefit of the doubt or not. Anya is understandable. She doesn’t like Willow anyway. But he, as her best and longest friend, should have a little faith in her and he doesn’t.

@@Girl4Music Thank you for your comment.
I agree that Xander being Willow's best friend certainly affects the situation. Though Willow has done such horrible acts, essentially raping Tara ( as some reactors have pointed out, what happens prior to OMWF most likely wasn't the first time ) as she couldn't have given consent, that I can't be against Xander for the way he handled things.
Willow's magic use has directly caused problems to Xander since season 3. So in this context because Willow only just became clean, Xander's attitude is understandable.
Though I think he could have handled things better. Xander should have faith that Willow can change, but he shouldn't have faith that she has changed. Not at this point. But again, he didn't handle things perfectly for sure.
The main thing is that I sensed love from the way Xander handled things, that is the most important thing in my opinion.

Honestly, at this point season 6 has become a bit overrated by a large percentage of the fandom. The desire to defend it has led to people claiming it’s the best or couple best seasons, which it definitely is not. It is an admirable season with a lot of great moments though.

It was my favorite when it came out. It's still my favorite. I loved this season years before I even realized so many people have issues with it. It has nothing to do with a desire to defend it. It has to do with how impactful and on point it is in dealing with things like toxic relationships and anxiety and depression in such an honest way, which was particularly unique for network television at the time.

@@TheMonkeyShowOnline same with me. I loved it since I watched it, it is really my favorite overall season. Well, it's tied with season 5 for the first spot, although I do love many other individual episodes from other seasons, but that is a different list. This is the first I am finding out people have so much hatred for it, I mean I expected controversies, but that's what makes a great story. It's not like Game of Thrones final season, where they sacrificed everything that resembled a great story in favor for shock value. Here you find the difference between going big for shock factor and just going where the story takes you, even if it takes you someplace ugly.

@@asthajindal5275 I had sort of the opposite experience with the last season of GoT. I saw Buffy S6 in real time, and didn't know about the hate until years later. I didn't see the last season of GoT until years after it aired, and knew ahead of time how much people hated it.
I didn't actually mind the last season of GoT personally. It wasn't amazing or anything, but I thought it had some great moments. The biggest issue was that it could have used a few more episodes to flesh out the ending storylines. It was basically big budget fan fiction, and I'm okay with that.
It seems the biggest sticking point with a lot of people is what happens with Dany, but that didn't surprise me at all. I could see her teetering in that direction all the way back in S1, but I know LOTS of people vehemently disagree with me on that!
Buffy S6, on the other hand, is still amazing 20+ years later. I was going through a dark time when it aired, and I couldn't believe how well it synced up with my personal experiences. Time hasn't diminished those feelings at all. Pretty much every story beat that made me cry back then still makes me cry today.
If anything, it's gotten even better over time, whereas GoT S8 is just kind of...'yeah, sure, I'm fine with that...'

@@TheMonkeyShowOnline I know exactly what you mean. I watched GOT many years after it aired as well, and I actually really liked the ending of Dany, but honestly, it could have used more than a few extra episodes, what it could have used was some solid character development instead of regression. Everybody seemed to get dumber and more insecure, more of a caricature of themselves, and just forgot their character arcs before. Its not a bad season, its reasonably good,, actors are great and production is awesome, it just failed by expectations due to its previous GREAT seasons. However, Buffy is simply fantastic, it just gets better and better every single season, and it manages to resonate on a human level through time and generations and space.

@@asthajindal5275 Mostly agreed. I thought the character development was pretty mixed in GoT S8. Some was good, some just stagnated, some regressed. To be fair, that's how people are in real life as well, so I don't hold it against the show too much.
Ironically, I've actually heard people complain that Buffy S6 is nothing but character regression that destroys all the character arcs built from S5, which is a critique I simply can't understand at all lol.
I've also only seen GoT S8 once, so I need to watch it again before solidifying my overall thoughts and feelings on it.
Buffy S6, however, I've seen MANY times, and each viewing just seems to sharpen and crystalize my love for it.
I 100% agree that each season of Buffy is better than the last, up until S7. Don't get me wrong, S7 is incredible in its own right, I just think S6 is the absolute best season of Buffy/Angel, and actually one of my favorite seasons of television of all time.
Little arbitrary side note: I wasn't crazy about Buffy S7 when it first came out, but it's only because I was on such a high from S6, and LOVED the dark tone so much, that I had a hard time switching back to the lighter tone.
Over time, however, S7 has become either my top 2 or 3 favorite season (can't decide favorite between 5 and 7). After reflecting on it, and going back years later, I really appreciate how it's basically like an epilogue for S6; of what life is like after coming out of a dark period.
Things feel brighter, humor and light-heartedness come back into focus, but things aren't quite the same, and even though you've evolved, you're not perfect, and there's fear of regression, but the confidence to face your challenges has resurfaced, and with it comes a new sense of grim determination and resilience.
I may be taking some emotional and philosophical liberties here, but that's part of what I love about the Buffy series: it inspires and celebrates emotional and philosophical liberties :-)
