Nothing but admiration for anyone undertaking a solo 2000k bike tour in a foreign country, holding down a job, and creating some of my favorite content on the internet! I read in another comment you're "taking your time" editing (not enough hours in the day) the video, but selfishly the wait is killing me. Thanks, have fun, and stay safe.

Great to have you back Katherine! It is very fresh contents you are making here. You know, it is not a new phenomenon that foreign influencers flocked in to report China. But we often got bored soon by those view count oriented contents which seeks too much attention on the bling bling(hardware) side of China. You on the other hand refuse to be classified as those and continuously do it your way without a single step back. How precious it is! Your focus on the ordinary people, rural areas rarely seen from other bloggers, cultural aspects of a transforming society and seemingly trivial matters like environmental topics are actually more revealing of how China it is today. You have reported more of a China an ordinary person will likely to experience than those bling bling bloggers do. Thanks for your hard work. Please keep up! Take care of yourself and safe journey.

its not only that, they still build even new temples . I live a bit further north from shanghai, in nantong area, and there i went to a buddhist temple looking like the old ones you know, only that it was build from 2018-2021, and still needs some final adjustments. Here they also copied an ancient garden with a big merchants house (from the qing dynasty) for relaxing purposes, it looks exactly like the original. If you look around you will find a lot of gems here in China , I am so glad to have moved to China withmy chinese wife.

Just a small thought off the topic, the very thing got me thinking when the stranger in the video taking selfie with you was calling you russian girl, to me it is nearly impossible to imagine a russian girl with your traits. Actually the US is probably one of the few countries that can actually produce or educate someone like you, open-minded, adventurous, easy-going, confident and willing to embrace culture from other places, not saying Russia doesn't have this type of person, but the very thing you strike me as an American at first impression means something. Only for this matter I think we need to have a healthy and strong tie with your nation, even though Washington today is filled with anti-China sentiments and politician and China vice-versa in certain degree. Hope the kind of you can keep 加油, contents like this deserve way more credits then it does now.

And hearing you guys speaking fluent Mandarin makes me green with envy! P/S: Still not sure what you do for a living and, I think, that is the 3rd time someone mistaken you for being Russian.
"Lots of these guys" are guardian lions (known in Chinese as shi or shishi (石獅) which are placed on both sides of Chinese houses, buildings, and temples to guard against evil spirits. Interestingly, these did not originate in China itself, but in Persia which were presented as gifts to the Han court by Persian diplomats and, by the sixth century CE, they had become popular as guardian representations for the rich and powerful.

I would say they are not lazy but want to feel comfortable. If they can afford things that make them feel comfortable they will. The other thing is the deeply rooted status complex and judging other based on material things one posses. If one commutes to work by bike he or she is seen as poor. I came across those park and ride subway stations where the people could oark their car and take metro to work. The chibese dont like doing so. Not comfortable and no status on metro train. Very simplistic mentality.

Fun fact QiDu Island used to be where all the poor of Wenzhou lived.
Another fact. Wenzhou is the only port on China's coast that didn't surrender to the Japanese in ww2.
My Great Great Grand Father talk to Japanese commanders and bail out his son in the war. More like a classic hostage situation. My Great Grand father and his men got caught by the Japanese on the mountain hideout due to local boy giving away the hide out. So my GG Father paid the Japanese commander to let him and his men go. Gold/Silver/antiques exchange for men.
Oh My G Father after the civil war was briefly arrested/ready for execution for being part of a capitalist class. The peasants remind the local boss. They won't be able to read any of the Central Gov commands to them. The solider's didn't understand Wenzhounese that was being discuss lol. So they went along with the local party member. Who was educated outside. Wasn't there for ww2.
My family didn't hand in weapons till after China open up and our way to the train station to leave for the West. The old men who still alive. Went to the local gov and told them were the caves of caches of weapons are. My family serve the Chinese gov/Dynasty for hundreds of years etc.. Their responsibility was to provide weapons to the local militia.

Always great to see an update of your bike tour. That area at 9:22 looks pretty nice for an after dinner chill ride~
Oh yeah, hope you've applied some sunscreen on your arms. Might wanna consider grabbing one of those UV blocking biking sleeves if you chance upon one along the way.

My goodness, why do you torture yourself so much riding those unending miles, on this old fashioned bicycle. I’m sure many electric bike makers would be dying to sponsor you. Take care. From Malaysia

it's not torture hahaha this bike is very comfortable, I like it better than the fancy fast road bikes where you are hunched over the handlebars. would be nice if I could get a bike sponsorship though ;)

Since I have being regaled by your vlogs, I like to have reciprocal in kind tales of my travels sometimes amusing, maybe. I was boarding a popular US airline at the fuselage entrance, a transfer flight between New York and Los Angeles, what appeared to be a customer service woman agent unceremoniously handing out a brown paper bag to each and every passenger from a big cardboard bin lined with plastic trash bag, quitely. All the passengers had more or less puzzled expressions. When I sat down at my assigned seat to open my brown paper bag, it revealed a delicious NY delicacy - my first pastrami half sandwich with american mustard and some cold water. I didn't know of its existence till then but much much later at Harry meets sally's on tv reruns and food channel. I have never struck this again. Perhaps to compensate for air stewardesses strike, it was far more efficient boarding and exiting😂and I loved the quirky memory hahaha.
