- Surreal 5-minute Alice in Wonderland short from 1930 with Joan Bennett, music by Irving Berlin, directed by Edward H. Roman. Originally shot in 2 strip Technicolor for a segment of the full-length feature Puttin' on the Ritz, this version has vintage style title cards added at the beginning and end, in order to make it appear to be a stand-alone short for airing on television in 6-minute slots. Some terrific costumes, and check out the breakdancing cat at 2:50!
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded between from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.
This was screened at the Carnegie Hall Cinema in November of 1980 in between SCARLET STREET and WOMEN IN THE WINDOW. Joan Bennett was present and did a Q&A.
Adorable Joan Bennett!
Wow! Break dancing move by the Cat! This was wonderful. Joan Bennett was gorgeous!
Big Joan Bennett fan. So this sequence from the early Talkie musical Puttin On the Ritz is a pleasure. She sure looks every inch the storybook heroine !
Originally in 2 color technicolor, now long lost.
Joan Bennett was beautiful all her life, wasn't she?
Beautiful🕹 Joan is just Wonderful!!
Wow, Joan is fantastic
Fantastic
Freaky breakdancing cheshire cat at
Joan looked beautiful but some of those characters sure are scary-looking! 😳
Popular entertainment sure was innocent 91 years ago! Anyone could watch this! (not including pre-code movies of course); but in general
Interesting how the White Rabbit s described as being in love with The Duchess. This isn’t from the original books, but instead a play version that would later be adapted into a 1931 film, which also used this song.
The main theme, shamelessly lifted by Berlin, is, "I'm Going to Leave Old Texas Now". Why?
This is creepy
