This was my absolute favorite rendition as a kid and always will be. I just watched it last night, and it will never NOT make me smile! Martin Short is BEST Madhatter, and all the acting, sets, songs, lighting, costumes, and especially puppetry is just beyond amazing 💙💙💙

This is the version I remember growing up with, even though I had seen the 1951 Disney version (You don't forget an unbirthday after watching that) and I dream of the day I ride Disneyland's teacups. However, I absolutely loved Martin Short's humour as the Hatter and Whoopi as Cheshire. My mother and I recite the tea party scene and the cook's "More Pepper!" often on a day to day basis. 😆
I also love George Wendt (Norm to those who have seen or are old enough to have remember watching Cheers) and Robbie Coltrane as the Tweedles.

(Ezekiel) Zeke Hamish Beckley: With a Queen of Hearts loud 100% voice that is so childish squeaky, sort of bitchy, high pitched like a steam tea Kettle or a raccoon chipmunk sounding type train whistle it's just so damn amazing how someone like Miranda Jane Richardson can play as this role. And she well and truly nails the entire role down to a tee. 7:10

I feel like this version is more closer to Walt Disney’s initial vision he had for his version of Wonderland considering in early versions he had characters like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, the White Knight and the Duchess, who weren’t of course in the final film. So watching this version, it’s kind of like seeing Walt’s original vision he had in mind for the story. It’s amazing how the screenwriters were able to find places to put those characters not present in the Disney version without the film feeling overcrowded. So they solved Walt’s problem he had when making his version 48 years prior.

This is absolutely the best adaptation, and probably will remain so. The use of practical effects works so well and makes it all seem more real and tangible. Not trying to hate on the Tim Burton Alice, as I actually enjoy that one as well, but it just makes everything seem weightless and inconsequential when it's all cgi. Plus this adaptation is the closest to the book over all other major productions

Alice in Wonderland 1999 10/10-A brilliant TV movie that stays closely to both the books starring a wondrous set of characters like Sir Ben Kingsley as the Smoking Hookah Caterpillar although I wish he stuck closer to the story blue and tired looking instead of a freaking Major the other characters were pretty good too Whoopi Goldberg does a awesome performance as the Grinning Cheshire Cat I mean she's just so sly and cheeky, Martin Short as a crazy yet funny Mad Hatter talking in a ridiculous voice, Christopher Loyd as the clumsy White Knight and in my option one of the best Queen of Hearts Actresses ever Miranda Richardson sounding so high-pitched and also the Mock Turtle played by one of my all time favourite actors to this day the late great Gene Wilder. It's a wonderful Alice in Wonderland much better than the 2010 Tim Burton remake *HANDS DOWN!!!*

This was quite a visual feat in its day. For a television program I can't think of a more well crafted production. There was only a few in the 90's that matched this level of craftsmanship. Gullivers Travels with Ted Danson comes to mind. And another one about a family who sails on a magic ship to a fantasy land. It was a miniseries. It ends with the bones of a dragon being being found by trolls and flesh and sinew and skin suddenly come back to it and save the family from the barbaric trolls. But I don't remember its name.
Anyways this production holds a special place in my childish heart.

As a kid, I had seen many versions of Alice in Wonderland.
But this 1999 film is by far the best version.
Mainly because there are puppets that are very well controlled by puppeteers and very rarely animated with computers.
When I think of the new version of Tim Burton, there is only computer animation where there is no love in it.
That's why Burton should have stayed away from this book.
