Yes that, but the poly used in the 70s isn’t the same stuff used today. The poly used today is a thermal or UV adhesive. They spray it on and either add heat or UV light to instantly cure, like a hard Candy shell. When I say instantly, I mean in the blink of an eye it goes from dripping wet to hard as a diamond (giggity). In the 70s (fender) sprayed poly on lightly and hung to dry. You're really good, my friend. I used to be envious of your ability but I've become more confident in mine. Now I enjoy watching your videos and how much passion you have for music, and guitars. Rock on, man.
I've always wondered how a guitar like that comes to be sold. Maybe it was a gigging musicians, or someone passed away, but I couldn't imagine. I have a couple guitars I've had for over 20 years now and I couldn't imagine parting with them. I've poured so much into those guitars, my passion, my pain, my love and my hatred at so many different stages of my life. I can point out spots where rings I haven't worn in over a decade have worn into the neck and spots where repairs have been made by different people that I haven't seen in forever. So many memories, so many feelings. Treat that guitar well man, you never know if it was the reason someone made it through to another day (there were many for me that my guitars got me through), if it was the inspiration that started a lifetime of love between a couple, or if it played the song that broke someones heart. Treat it well and continue to play it like the piece of history it probably is.
Shipping a guitar in tune is how I always do it. Think about it, when in tune the entire neck is completely balanced between string tension and truss rod. Slacken the strings and you lose that balance which in turn makes the neck far less stable and more susceptible to damage. The worst that can happen to a fender (Gibson is a bit more complex due to angled headstock) is you break a string in shipping. It's why all guitars are shipped to retailers pretty much in tune.
I dont think Gibsons should be shipped in tune, the string tension will exacerbate a break (from the headstock angle). Also, I'm not sure on the science behind what you just said about the neck being in balance. Retailers are shipping new guitars (not vintage) because they do not want to rely on box stores to tune and setup there guitars and there is minimal risk in doing it. So I think that's a completely different arguement. But what do I know🤷♂️I never thought that would be the arguement on this video lol!
Matthew Scott the Gibson headstock issues are probably more important to worry about than a neck moving during shipping. Trogly will probably know what’s best.
Really enjoy your videos. Well spoken throughout, and your knowledge concerning vintage guitars is well above and beyond your years. Thank you for putting something out that I love and have been interested in for years. Truly appreciate all your time, efforts and research in bringing forth a great product. Sincerely, Jerry E. Martin.
Not gross at all. You should’ve seen/smelt my sons room when he was a late teen. That guitar and whatever smell accompanies it is beautiful. Even if it stunk of secondhand smoke from the way bars used to be, I would consider that odour to be an essential part of that beautiful guitar.
I grew up learning guitar with my dad. He would tell me stories of these guitars. I'm 31 now and I've had the absolute pleasure of playing a vintage strat, quite disgusting. From what I've found, if it still makes noise, they sound good and likely more comfortable! It feels like your holding a piece of history. My dad has passed now and your videos make me remember our good times jamming! Keep up the good fight preserving these old guitars and good job on your numbers, your creeping up on 100k!
I love that guitar. I would love to know the story of the person that played it year after years in smoky dive bars. Were they a bluesman? Western Swing Country? Southern Rock? I’m going to start smoking a box of cigars a day to get my Tele to look like that! 😝
Sweet looking tele and great walkthru on how it plays. Just one comment. When shipping guitars it's generally best to ship them tuned up. The reason is that without string tension the truss rod will back bow the neck and can permanent (especially if exposed to heat during shipping). If the instrument is shipped with no string tension, then the trust rod should be loosened too.
It's absolutely perfect - warts and all! Don’t change a thing - cosmetically that is! You have to fix the neck pick-up and volume pop! It sounds really good. Thanks for posting
My wife loves my guitar collection. We travelled to Nashville to Carter and got my Gretsch Country Gentleman. I love this Tele. Should have folded up the Bigsby prior to shipping.
That is a very interesting guitar I must say. I grew up in my father's music store is the child and we sold Fender guitars, I remember a chocolate brown finish that they put on some strats and Telly's in the early 70s that was rather unpleasant when they're doing it again now. That Qatar has been rode hard and put away wet period which is what you want from a vintage beat up fender. It sounds wonderful and you are a truly great player The Black Crowes stuff sounded great and you are correct about Fender would just peel a guitar off the line through a Bigsby on it and Que Sera Sera they were famous for for making changes in the middle of a run back in the day and I can remember seeing you no subtle differences in guitars that came into the shop great guitar. Telecasters I love them got to have them that's all I play.
Looks "nasty" but as a fan of old Rat Rods, I find it to be very cool. The Bigsby is a huge plus for me, even though I don't tend to use trm much at all. I think it adds another layer of vintage goodness! The pickup and knob would have a been a price point issue, but not enough to keep me from getting it for my own use. Those can be replaced. It's something that looks cool, looks vintage, and adds a little more variety to a collection. A definite work in progress, but would definitely put it with my others for daily playing!!
Oh ya... I'd take her apart and clean her up, just replacing the string, and just clean up the gear. And those holes in the back for the strings, that's a telecaster thing I think, all of the ones I've seen do that... Awesome restoration project. I think this is a great thing for you... keep smiling Matthew! 🙂 As for item replacements, the pots and pickup are an easy replacement...
Hey man, just wanted to show some appreciation. This video specifically got me into the idea of fixing guitars, i had just started playing guitar at the time but ive since little by little been building my confidence. Just did my first pickup wiring myself yesterday and wanted express my thanks for your vids. I will forever be chasing your tone at 7:00
Hey, generally I prefer clean-and-shiny stuff, but in cases like this, I appreciate that it's truly original. Therefore I'd say, don't change a thing, appearance-wise; it's a major part of that guitar's identity. So drop $35.00 and get a tolerably decent neck pickup from Guitar Fetish. Electric connections could be easily checked. You're right, that bridge pickup alone sounded real good; with a decent neck pickup (doesn't need to be fantastic or top of the line, and a no-shit Fender Tele pickup is probably out there if ya prefer) this could be a cool guitar. And if you're gonna change out both pickups, again, I'd recommend a matched set from GFS. No, I don't work for 'em, I've just had good results with 'em.

Adam James Rogers I 100% agree. Leave a guitar tuned always.
@@MatthewScottmusic agree, depends on the guitar.
Matthew Scott the Gibson headstock issues are probably more important to worry about than a neck moving during shipping. Trogly will probably know what’s best.
I wish there was a compilation of him playing different guitars. All in one video.
Martin.
You're a very good player. Smooth vibrato, no dead notes, bends to accurate pitch.
Not gross at all. You should’ve seen/smelt my sons room when he was a late teen. That guitar and whatever smell accompanies it is beautiful. Even if it stunk of secondhand smoke from the way bars used to be, I would consider that odour to be an essential part of that beautiful guitar.
There was a period when lacquer was used instead of wax for potting. Lacquer can flake off hence the microphonic quality, sometimes also shorting.
That Tele is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to have one like that
I grew up learning guitar with my dad.
Sounded great but the question is what happened to the beautiful Gibson acoustic guitar??????
Yeah, been wondering that myself. Would love an update on that dove.
Update coming on it soon I've been working on it.
If there are holes on the back, it's not a Factory Bigsby. The Bigsby was available as an aftermarket upgrade kit.
It is factory bigsby ( Fender Bigsby)- but definitely not factory installed- at least not when first produced. definitely a mod.
I’d play the hell out of that.
Someone already has 😂
Sweet looking tele and great walkthru on how it plays. Just one comment. When shipping guitars it's generally best to ship them tuned up. The reason is that without string tension the truss rod will back bow the neck and can permanent (especially if exposed to heat during shipping). If the instrument is shipped with no string tension, then the trust rod should be loosened too.
Love the Black Crowe’s riff. Totally fits
I liked it when you started playing "Remedy" on it. Definitely keep the bridge pickup.
100% I'd play that guitar! You kidding me? It sounds like chicken-fried heaven!
“chicken-fried heaven” is the most southern phrase ever
I could just see the disappointment on your face when you seen that case .
*When you saw that case.
@@ztbt Don't saw that case, it works best in one piece.
@@marks4840 🤣
Damn dude, you got a hell of a deal there - irrespective what it cost you. Sounds killer. Repot the neck pickup with beeswax and you're in business.
I will forever be chasing your tone at 7:00
Like my ex-wife, she's ugly, but you can't help but Love her.
Lmao
And she said the same thing about you as well😂😂😂😂
I love her too!
You can't love ugly women
Heard that in Don Rickles voice.
Mans is holding one of the most rare, coolest looking telecaster in the world and he's acting like it's a squire tele from guitar center. This thing is fucking amazing.
lol right?
He's a guitar snob. Spoiled with so many guitars. If you like it check out fender vintera Tele it's the same with the bigsby and all
@@TickleThatMonkey ??? He’s being objective and highlighting its flaws. The thing is cool af, but it still looks gross and has issues. Bunch a smooth brains with no comprehension skills in this thread lmao.
@@TickleThatMonkey "Right," so that's why he *buys* them, including that S.G. that had its headstock broken off which he fixed with epoxy. Also his Stratocaster that obviously doesn't have all of its paint. I don't think he cares too much about guitar appearances, but he's still going to point out everything. He's not just someone who picks the guitar up, plays it for 2 minutes, and uploads the video without talking much about the instrument.
@@101Volts Man makes money from people watching his vids. Rinse, wash, repeat
I love how beat up that is. And the hum from the pups. I want an original 72-75 Fender tele thin line with Wide ranges in in it. Or a TC-90
You have a piece of history that has never been duplicated to this day ! All these ( minor ) issues can be addressed without compromising this amazing axe. Nobody cares what it looks like and if they do they don't matter . LOL ! Cherish this piece of craftsmanship and do what you can to preserve a piece of History ! Rock on. Take your time and enjoy playing before and after it's resurrection !!
Hit me up if you sell her... she's awesome! You can fix that pickup easy, but all that charm??? geez. Awesome!!!

man, I love that gtr, probably i m stupid, but for me it´ s a beauty, the best for you, from Argentina.
Killer tele, frustrating with the undisclosed issues though
I have a 56 chevy I drive after the snow melts in tge Spring. This 75 Tele was born the year after I graduated HS. Playing it would be like driving my 56. Kinda cool. I have four teles and like them all but the older ones are just cool. I don't care for the "distressed" look unless it's real, not artificial so I'd play the snot out of it! Great vids Mathew.
It's beautiful. Absolutely perfect. My 63 strat was like that, in fact it was even more worn down than that. I loved that guitar. Unfortunately some low life stole it.
Folk pay bucks to get a brand new guitar "relic'd" to look half as good as that . It sounds sweet too
Not gross at all. Aesthetically this one would look better with a rosewood neck though.
I would honestly love to have a guitar that "disgusting", has a lot of character IMO
I have a Bigsby Tele with a mastery bridge. I love the sound of the bridge pickup on your example! Sounds great!
And yes, I would play the hell out of that, regardless of how beat up it is
I have a 1972 Tele like this, I love it. My neck PU was microphonic too - I wax potted it. Easy fix.
Man that is a gorgeous looking Tele ... it's got history infused into it!
No smell and can be wiped down to feel clean. Sounds great, looks cool. She's a keeper!
great video man! here, in Brazil, where i live, there is many different guitar brands from the 60s that you should really check them out! such as:
Giannini- SuperSonic (a mix between a jazzmaster and a strat)
Snake- (Hollow body guitars with many tone options)
Soneli- (a guitar with 3 pickups)
Giannini Ritmo II- (one of the fist brazilian made solid body guitar)
cheers!
Nice find. A bit of cleaning (clean the scuzz but leave the wear) and new strings should do it.
That country sound! I started to cry. So sweet till it went out of tune lol. FYI might be a sheilding issue, with the neck? Either way, that bridge pickup sounds sooooooo good. Thanks for sharing
4:43 “you never want to ship your guitar in tune”
PRS “hold my single malt scotch!”
Pretty much every manufacturer out there ships in tune. It's an old wives tail to detune your guitar before shipping.
Ship your vintage gibson in tune see how it goes
@@MatthewScottmusic Lol I have never owned or shipped one of those! There is always exception to every rule!
Rickenbacker ships in tune! But I wouldn't expect a vintage guitar with a Bigsby to be in tune of course...
I like it. I like worn guitars. The wood has been played and that's a good thing IMO.
Love the vintage sound. But come on, Matthew, you can play a Paw Patrol kids guitar from Five Below and make it sound godly
reminded me of Zakk Wylde on the hello kitty guitar hahaha
Ive got a 74 blonde Tele with a rosewood neck...the neck pickup feeds back too...i was told its normal in that era. I love the used look on your brown Tele !
Love it! The moment you lifted the lid!!
I love it id totally play it. The older and more “gross” the better in my opinion. Just shows the age and love that someone put into it.
That thing is insane man, so much character, if that guitar could talk I'm sure it would have a lot to say.
Better believe this one can talk. Just look her over and she tells you everything. Show her some love and she'll tell you even more.
That is one of the most gorgeous guitars I've ever laid eyes on.
I'm not a tele fan, but the sound from that bridge pickup with the lower string tension from the Bigsby and your tweed or reverb amp was enough to make me want it. Old nast vintage is cool only if the sound justifies it. I'm sold on that one. I would carve countours
I have a 1972 Telecaster in the placid blue color with a factory Bigsby I bought in 76. It does not have the pass through holes for the strings. It has the Fender "F" on it.
Yeah, I'd disinfect it, address the neck pickup and then just play it.
Crazy looking guitar, you're super lucky it doesn't smell like it looks!
I think after playing this you can call yourself an Alcoholic and a Chainsmoker
Damn that thing has seen eyerything! Would definetly rock it!
Looking at that thing makes me wonder what my lungs look like.
old guitars and electric bass guitars, dare I say antics/vintage are amazing to play.
I got an old BB-1600 Yamaha bass and it is still trucking. All original, including the pickups.
Get a replacement pick-up for the bridge position or wax pot it. Tighten up the potentiometer nut. Other than that, it sounds GREAT.
