    Thank you unknown young videographer. Your steady, non panning back and forth camera work sets an example for anyone in position to capture historical news events such as this. Your unblinking and unwavering eye captures the horrifying awesome power of uncontrollabe nature.

    I remember that day here in Australia, TV programs were interrupted with live feeds from Japan showing Ariel views from helicopters of the Tsunami crossing land and roads far from the coast. Those images still chill me today, I feel sorrow for the Japanese people.

    It’s just so insane every time I watch these videos, at first it doesn’t seem that big, you think oh it’s far away and moving slowly…then less than a minute later houses are floating away. It doesn’t seem like it could be real, it’s just so unbelievable

    For years before this disaster, the Japanese government had worked to construct schools, hospitals, and other official buildings in safe locations to serve as tsunami refuges. Even so, however, people were killed even at some of these sites because this tsunami was so immense that its reach couldn't have been anticipated. It was the largest such event in recorded Japanese history. Fortunately, the school from which this video was shot was not touched.

    I appreciate the vid title because as I watch 2011 tsunami vids I'm constantly wondering if children made it up the hills. I worry for the workers in buildings, day care centers, hospitals, and if police/fire personnel made it to safety. As an old person my heart hurts for the elderly but I also know that we would be willing to give our lives if it means a young person survives.

      Sadly, more than 250 local firefighters lost their lives in the tsunami waves :(
      They were tasked with closing the flood gates and sea wall gates in the coastal areas, as well as ensuring that people were being evacuated to safer grounds.
      I remember a quote by a firefighter from Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture.
      "When an earthquake occurs, people head for the mountains [due to tsunami], but firefighters have to head toward the coast".

    • @FloozieOne
      @FloozieOne Год назад +1

      I disagree. I am elderly myself and don't consider that my life is any less important then anyone else's. Those who survived were smart or careful and evacuated before the wave came. I am not counting the thousands that believed the official line and went to the shelters only to die there when the buildings were submerged. Obviously many did survive, they are on the hillside, but this was one of the worst-hit places for casualties; ~80% of the population drowned.

      They have a modern siren warning system. Those who ignored or underestimated it, had it coming I say. Dont laugh about a Tsunami warning as it is no laughing matter. The world saw that in 2011 and in 2004. Obviously I'm not talking about lonely old people who simple didn't have the help to get away quickly.

    From the geography of this area of Minamisanriku on google maps and old before pictures of the town, the black car would have driven up a hillside towards the back end of the school that u see in the foreground and into an elevated neighborhood. 3:30 the white house at the bottom really handled those houses for a decent 20 seconds.

    Tsunami have the speed and destructiveness of an F5 tornado, coupled with 1000 times the reach, and 100 times the killing power. Indeed, a tsunami is one of those disasters that will almost certainly kill you if you get caught up in it. Drowning in icy churning water filled with debris is one of the worst ways i can think of to die. How terrifying it must have been to those who, for whatever reason, did not evacuate! Imagine being safe in your house one minute and in a rapididly sinking boat the next!
