Angel Studios has some real talent they are working with. Their flagship series "The Chosen" is some great story telling. Although based on biblical stories, the stories are largely original stories focused on the disciples that followed Jesus, and just really making them human, showing them dealing with the same issues many people deal with today. I can't wait for the 4th season!

Funny story about my experience at the theater watching this movie. When the credits started, I told my mom I had to go to the restroom and to wait for me outside the restroom. She said ok and I left. When I came out, she was nowhere in sight. I went back to the theater and the credits were still rolling but no one was in the theater. I texted her asking where she was and no reply. Went to the next closest hallway with a bathroom and she wasn't there. Also, looked at the lobby and didn't see her. I finally called her and she was in the entry of the theater. She had missed the first bathroom and was looking for me at the other. She waited a bit and finally decided to wait in the entrance. The funny thing is both of us had the crazy thought of did she shift? I love movies that can do that. That can make you think snd wonder.

So many faith based films are pretty cheesy with shallow storyline and bad acting. Angel Studios seems to be one of the first faith based production companies that understand how to produce a film with a premise that can appeal to a wide audience. Looks like a decent film.

The Shift only appeals to a wide audience because it's not Biblically Accurate in any measure.

Also, Neal McDonough, who played The Benefactor, is an experienced actor. He's also in Minority Report (2002), which is another great Sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise. I definitely recommend you reacting to that film Mello.

Now this is lit!! 🔥 I think that popular reactors like you Mello are going to be the future for Hollywood marketing & promoting their new films to the public. Why? Because too many of these "Movie Critics" have fumbled the ball within the past decade. Great reaction bro! 👍🏿 And congratulations!! 🎊

10:47 all the quotes in the film are passages from the book of Job. This is very loosely a Job-like story, where the devil takes everything from him and tempts him to turn his back on God.
    :edit: 14:30 yes, that

My biggest issue with the Shift is that it spends a little too much time telling us its ideas instead of showing, but when it's doing it right, it does it very well. The core emotional drama is solid, in large part because of the lead actor, and the villain is both charismatic and intense. Personally, I would've trimmed some of the monologues and fogured out a way to visually communicate these themes, but beyond that, I very much enjoyed it. It almost has a bitter sweet ending that I appreciated.
Other "religious films" that I think range from very good to great are The Seventh Seal, Hacksaw Ridge, The Book of Eli, Silence, The Prince of Egypt, Signs, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, The Passion of the Christ, Unbroken, It's a Wonderful Life, Kingdom of Heaven (the director's extended cut), Amazing Grace, Nacho Libre (yes, a comedy about a Mexican wrestler does have religious themes, even if they are implicit), A Christmas Carol (any of them, but I'm partial to the Disney animated version with Jim Carrey, a movie I consider to be Disney's last truly excellent film), The Witch, The Wicker Man (the old one with Christopher Lee, not the remake with Nicholas Cage, though be forewarned it's more than a bit explicit and doesn't really take sides), Jesus Revolution, the Chronicles of Narnia films, Doubt, and the Lord of the Rings films (it's not overt, more on rhe level of thematic subtext and symbolism, but Peter Jackson wemt to the effort to maintain as much of the themes and ideas of the books as he could, which translated into the preservation of a lot of the religious ideas that heavily influenced Tolkien's stories). Most "faith based films" suck for the same reason most "progressive films" that have especially become prominent in the last decade suck, because they're more interested in preaching a sermon than telling a good and well-made story. This movie gets a little too on the nose with its message at points, but the story is genuinely emgaging.

2:57 the coin reads "To Thine Own Self Be True - Unity Service Recovery."
It's an AA recovery coin. The Roman numeral I in the middle indicates a one-year chip.
That's why it's significant that, at the end of that scene, he pushes the full beer glass away from himself and invites her to a tea house. He was at a crossroads, and he made a choice to move forward, and that's actually kind of important to his character later on.
I mention all this not to suggest you missed it, but that, in explaining the coin, i realized mid sentence that this scene is doing a lot more work than i noticed on my first watch.

22:16 I kind of have to disagree a bit re: the editing. Overall I thought the movie was a solid B. For an Angel Studios film it's a top rate effort. But you said it yourself, the movie dragged a bit in the beginning. I thought there were a handful of scenes that felt like they went on a little too long. The ending especially, i think if they had ended on the conversation in the bar, held it just long enough to learn she was the nurse Molly, do the tea invite, then have her give a smile or some other clue that she was going to say yes and he would get a second chance at his life, then cut to black, that would have been a crisp ending.
They probably could have cut down the run time by six or eight minutes, had a much tighter story, and not lost anything.
And maybe made a little more effort to explain the rules of shifting. For a movie that had a bit too much tell don't show, i felt like they left a lot of the stuff about shifting off the table, like did that one guy know he would shift on the bridge, how can you tell, how does the chair work, etc. They left it vague enough to feel somewhere between mystical and random, compared to other near-future sci-fi like Looper or Everything Everywhere. But this last bit is a story gripe, not an editing gripe.

I literally just walked out of the theater after seeing The Shift. Let me tell you - I shifted in my seat for the entire film.
I'm so conflicted as I am both a Christian missionary AND I disciple artists.
Why am I conflicted? Because I believe the gospel and I appreciate good art. There's nothing I want more than for people to hear the gospel and to have an opportunity to respond. There's nothing I want more than for Crwatives to know The Creator.
However, the Christian film genre has an identity crisis - is it art that is free to tell a good story? Or is it the true gospel smuggled into theaters regardless of a good story?
If we look at art in the Bible we see that it most clearly fits into the category of General (Natural) Revelation - Art is Romans 1 & 2. Jesus is Special Revelation.
The Shift was a wholesome movie which is Sliding Doors meets The Matrix - ish. From the very opening scene it was apparent that the fulm was going to cause me to Shift in my seat.
    Final thoughts:
Adding recognizable celebrities to poorly crafted stories will never make good films.
I fear we have gone too far into the investment to stop making "Christian films" and just start making good films made by Christians.
