Hi Amanda! Great vid. Well... wow that’s a great quandary to be in for sure. That guerlain bottle is so impressive wow! I think if you know you are never going to sell it ever 100%? I would definitely open it, but quickly get it decanted into 5 100ml bottles and get them air sealed. Those bottles with the stoppers? Once opened it will definitely evaporate. I would maybe seek the help of a place that can crimp some 100ml bottles and that will keep it safe. Of course it’s so gorgeous and special but I’ve always said... perfume is there to be enjoyed not looked at! Spend your time using up some of it and pass the rest down to important people. With the cutting of the string, I think there is a way to open it without cutting it, you can gently rock the stopper back and forth gently stretching the string. They’re designed not to be re-sealed with the string though. Whatever you decide... you deffo have something super special there! Look up “Baudruchage” it’s the method of how your bottle is sealed. It might give you some more info about opening etc. Good luck! Also if you wanna post this question with pics in my group over on Facebook. People will deffo come to your aid and swoon over that gorgeous bottle” it’s called Ouch110 Smelly Friends :)
Shalimar does not go bad. It matures I have some from the 50s 60s and 70s that smells like heaven. I also had a 60s edc and poured a 60s extrait in it. Lol shalimar is heaven. Use a razor blade to cut the strings properly to be able to keep the tassel. You’ve lucked up on this one ma’am......
That particular Shalimar vintage is fairly easily obtained, so you could always pick up a second to open, if you'd rather keep this lovely gift intact!
That guerlain cologne is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry! You know you don't have to decide on opening it now, especially that you feel this hesitant about it... when time comes for that it will naturally happen... meanwhile enjoy it unopened ❤️
Yes! I am a subscriber!! Hahaha it’s me! I was the one who tipped you off to the Betsey perfume on Mercari! I am so so so glad you scooped it up! 💙 I knew how much it would mean to you. Blessings!
Amanda Loves Perfume Hi Amanda! I bought a new fragrance today and I immediately thought of you! I feel like you’d love it. Please give it (and the others) a try. It’s called “Skin” from Urban Outfitters. Only $18. You can order online and they are shipping within 1-2 weeks right now. It smells incredible!!!!! Along the lines of Glossier “You” and Juliette Has A Gun “Not a Perfume”. Amazing! Urban Outfitters also has a perfume called “Santal Supreme” and it is almost an EXACT dupe for Le Labo’s “Santal 33”. Anyway, hope you can give these a shot!!! :)
Shalimar is in a class of its own. You can try to open the bottle with the thread still around it and see if it's possible. With smaller Guerlain bottles, the thread was tied around the neck. If you can do so, you can tie it around the bottom of the stopper, as if you would to let the stopper hang when opened. Regarding the perfume staying good as long as its not opened - temperature and light both affect a perfume's longevity. How these two affect the perfume depends on its composition. Beautiful bottle, I didn't know these were being sold as late as 1995. Cherish it :)
just my 2 scents - if you want to open to wear the fragrance, then open it. OR.... you can purchase a small bottle someplace else and keep this for memories & keep sake- pass it along to your daughter when the time is right. It really is a work of art, esp. with the juice/tassle in tact. Just GORGEOUS. 🤩
Light Blue is one of my top five fragrances! I always repurchase it when I finish a bottle. I picked up Light Blue Sun at Marshall’s last week! It’s coconuty and beachy!
Hi Amanda, awesome video...Great collection!! Have you considered doing an unboxing with blind buys On fragrance net? I would love to see your initial impression... You describe scents so well...that would be fun Hope you have a great evening!
I have the same bottle of Shalimar not that big though. I wear Shalimar so I would open it would you wear the perfume is my question. If not then I wouldn't open it
Dang, that cologne bottle is huge 😳 I’d say use it and then keep the bottle. 🤷♀️ if you’re not going to sell it, use it so you can smell it and think of your mom 💓
Hi Amanda! I have heard that keeping your fragrances in the refrigerator is good. I need to do the same thing. I really love the Light Blue as well. It is so divine!
Open the bottle. Life is short, if you don’t enjoy it someone else may. One must enjoy and live life not attempt to orchestrate it. Your mother gave it to you to enjoy. Open the bottle, life goes on whether you open yourself to it or not. Go ahead!!!!
Amanda Loves Perfume I tried it again after watching and it smelled like I remembered - I wish the bottle of Lauren (that gorgeous square red bottle) smelled as good ♥️
I love Soleil Blanc for the summer. Like you said it doesn't last and neither does perfume on me, but I like to layer the two and it definitely helps with the longevity. Nice haul :)
Hello Amanda! I loved seeing inside your fridge! I’m still considering buying one. Just haven’t quite yet. Always so happy when I see you have a new video ❤️
I am torn with that bottle. On the one hand, I say life is so uncertain. If something were to happen to you, the person who gets it will not cherish it as much. Then, the other half of me says keep it, and look at it and always be reminded of your mother. You can always buy a new Shalimar and use that as a reminder of her. She bought that in the freakin' 90s! That's awesome. I dunno. I always say we shouldn't save fragrances and we should use em all up, but that is a beautiful bottle.
It's Super Dacob. You can probably get into one of his videos and comment and maybe see if there's a way to message him. Thomas would definitely be a good resource as to whether to open it. Personally I wouldn't because of the full presentation, the chance of evaporation, and the very personal memories you have connected to it. I have two bottles that I keep strictly for nostalgia purposes, do not use them and store them carefully. Is the sale you mentioned about the Santal 33/Glossier You one still on? That sounds like it's right up my alley. What is the website?
If you remembered the name of the channel who reviews vintage fragrances, I’d love to check it out as well. Vintage to me is 1970s and earlier😄 and had many of my favorite scents. Thx👍🏻
And I also just got that La Mia La Perla (or whatever it’s called lol). The opening is sweeter than I thought it would be but I do like it. I agree with you...perfect for cold weather.
Because your mother gave it to you and it reminds you of her. I would never open it. But I would beautifully display it so when I look at it I would think of her.❤
I keep my perfumes in a mini fridge too!! Almost exactly the way you do! I'm a biologist and have worked in labs--it's very obvious that higher temperatures and exposure to light makes oils (aka perfume oils) go rancid faster. Frederick Malle has a perfume fridge for his retail locations!
The way a perfume ages depends on the ingredients, & heat/light exposure. If your Mom stored that bottle well, it's fine. If you store it well, it will be fine. Opening a perfume lets oxygen get to it, it may have a little effect, but not enough to matter. You can sit a brand new unopened bottle under hot lights & it probably will be rancid within 3 months. Vanillas Darken, has nothing to do with a smell. All perfumistas KNOW what rancid smells like. Ive had it happen within a year (again, ingredients) & I have some that are perfect, over 20 years old. Surprised at how well Avon perfumes hold up! Never shame a cheapie! Anyway, I have somewhere between 500 & 700 perfumes. Stored in their own special place in my beauty room. I have a Shalimar Souffle that is 20 yrs old, half empty & perfect. My thing is this. If you ever sold this you would regret it FOR..EV..ER!!! Don't, Please. It was your Moms. I have an original J'adore that was my Moms, 2/3s full, hate J'adore, wouldn't sell it for a million $$. My Mom passed in 09. USE IT girl, then treasure the bottle forever!!!!!!!! It's gorgeous & will always be your "Mom".. I would advise not using it all, (leave a little juice) b/c one day you will treasure sitting down somewhere, in a quiet place for a minute, opening it up, & remembering. Trust me on this!!!!
I don’t believe fragrances go “bad” but once air gets introduced the notes become more concentrated. Frag heads will purchase partials and opened, vintage fragrances all the time!
Amanda, Please keep it sealed. You can easily purchase Shalimar in a more long lasting scent. EDP or Extrait is heaven. Leave the EDC in the bottle. Really not worth opening just to sample the cologne. It has more value and looks perfect sealed!
Open it!!! Enjoy it- savor it! Fragrance masticates once oxygen is introduced through spraying or opening. I have a new Love by Kilian I recently sprayed and stored until fall. The only thing that’ll spoil a perfume or eu de Parfum is prolonged excessive heat. Certain houses (like Creed) that use mostly natural ingredients folks like to “grail bake”- leave in their hot car to intensify the scent. ❤️ The juice should be fine. Gorgeous bottle, beautiful memory of growing up with mom. 😉
When I first saw the post with it. I said you should open it and experience the fragrance. But after watching the video, and hearing you say. It’s your mom int bottle, I changed my mind. I think you should not open it. I don’t know if you can get that fragrance anymore. But if can purchase a regular bottle. And keep that one intact. Especially because it belong to your mom. It’s such a hard decision to make. Can’t wait to see what you decide. Love your video
Your choice but I would get a second smaller bottle to "experience" and leave this large unopened one as a family heirloom. Few generations in the future, it might be worth a lot to your descendants.
I don't like some musk but love narciso musk. Never smell Jovan white musk before. Does la Mia have that sharp smelling musk? Open it! Make memory out of it
I would say open it! You know you are curious as to the smell because it is vintage! And you take good care of your fragrances and store in the cool fridge....so why not enjoy it and indulge in your memories of your childhood! Do it! Then you can compare to a modern Shalimar?
keep it closed because you know what it smells like & another reason is to save it as a beautiful display bottle....you can always open it but once opened....it will never be the same & if you don't start using it it could turn on you & that would be a shame.

I personally wouldn't open it. I look at it as more of a collector's item that I would want to keep in pristine condition.
