steve goodman song, gone far too young, what a great song
I saw Steve Goodman perform this song in 1972 at the Earl of Old Town in Chicago sitting at a table by the stage with John Prine and Art Thieme.
a lovely rendition - just thinking about all the times she heard her dad sing this while on the road 🙂
Not enough women covering this classic. Thank you!
Something special in her voice that I could listen to all day long.
Give Steve Goodman credit for writing the song (Arlo would agree)
Steve Goodman is credited in the description, but I namecheck Arlo in the title because it's his daughter singing. The decision was made to label it like that because of the almighty RUclips algorithms
Some damn good genes in the Guthrie family!!! And a big than you to Steve, you are missed
Cool thing about this song is that there's a million different versions by million different artists, each and every one being awesome.
I only hope we never tire of Steve Goodman, the Guthrie's, Seegars who've kept us living free since the sixties. I've enjoyed this song and that folk music since Arlo and company put it out. What a great tribute to her father and a movement fostered in part by the Vietnam war and "America's reaction" to the worst of it and what we grew up knowing because of so many "folk heroes". John McClain, GySgt, USMC, ret.
My wife and I used to sing that at least 47 years ago and got married a year later....we will always love Arlo’s version and you both are Fantastic ! Love it !
Bill you win a dinner in Alice's restaurant, i have just 46 years on our counter, best regards of southern France
Steve Goodman would be proud..
I’ve seen live video of her and her sisters singing backup with their dad. Just like Amy Helm, one heck of a family legacy.
One of my favourite songs given another outing. What a great rendition with great harmonies . Her Dad must be proud !
An awesome job on this song by a lovely lady . RIP Steve G- your music lives on.
Beautiful
A beautiful song beautifully performed by Serah! What a lovely voice! I love her!👏👏👏👏🧡🧡🧡🧡
Perfect voice for this perfect song.
My daughter, Kayla small opened for them in a small venue in Chester County South Carolina in an old church when she was 14 years old. Great song, great couple, so down-to-earth
How many more true classics would Steve Goodman have written had he longer?
Many!
Oh it makes me cry! Steve would have so loved this! He loved kids so much, and he was so bowled over when yet another person want d to sing this song. We didn’t see him much but he knew an older relative of mine, and they were on the porch and I brought him out some coleslaw to go with his turkey sandwich and he asked me if I was a little girl or actually a secret angel, I think he would be sure Sarah was even more angelic singing the song so gently.
My favorite train song.
This is such a sweet and sincere version.
Good job, you are making your dad and grandfather proud
I first remember hearing "The City of New Orleans" as the main backdrop theme in a wonderful off-Broadway play in Greenwich Village, The Hot L Baltimore, many years ago. Not long after that, but still many years ago, I was able to go to a charitable fund raising concert at a high school in my town, Huntington, NY., that featured three elite song writer/performers: Pete Seeger, Harry Chapin and Steve Goodman. It was great! All three are gone now, first Steve, then Harry and then Pete. But the memory of that concert is still fresh in my mind, and puts a smile on my face whenever I think about it and all the wonderful music they left us with, including this song.
Yes! I saw the Hot L Baltimore off Broadway as well and remember this song from it! Also remember them using Sweet Caroline. Thanks for the cool memory...
Oh those good old days when we were delighted by the songs of Guthrie clan!
Steve Goodman song. We lost him 36 years ago last week.
You and Arlo saved my life this summer. Best birthday gift ever. you may never know.
Fabulous version of a great song
I used to go see Mr Goodman sing this song. Thanks for keeping his memory alive.
Beautiful performance Sarah Lee
Version pleine de tendresse. Excellente interprétation. Bravo !!!
Thank you for posting the song and thanks for a wonderful rendition! Folk lives!
Steve's songs live on!
Absolutely Angelic!!!!
Bet your dad is very proud of his little girl. You don't know how many times I listened to these songs in 1968 in the gulf of tonkin launching fighter jets into Vietnam.
Lots of love from your new fan club in Canada
Dearest Serah Lee _ -> THIS IS BEAUTIFUL !!
it is absolutely beautiful. greetings from Switzerland
the city of New Orleans is an excellent song.
Lovely song with numerous memories. But don’t forget Steve Goodman ❤😢
This excite me Arlo Guthrie . I forgot your kids are adults! Sara even kinds looks like you .
She has a beautiful voice. Thank you 😊
Absolutely fantastic guitar work, I'm quite impressed
Great job on a Steve Goodman song. Arlo did a great job on it but Steve wrote it. Sarah Lee after seeing your video at The Women's March in DC breaking out in the crowd with Woody's "This Land"…I am a new fan!
I am a fan of the late singer/songwriter Phil Ochs and all of his music, going back to when his first album came out 50 years ago, and I always loved most, his own renditions of his own songs, but Sarah Lee Guthrie's performance of "When I'm Gone" is now the version that song that I now most often turn to, when I need to hear that song. It's also on RUclips, and something special.
Dowdye47 And she opens her dad’s shows with Phil’s song.
Shame that Arlo perpetuated incorrect lyrics in his original version. Chords that Arlo used went a bit sideways from Steve's original version too. Oh well, I suppose that's called creativity
Beautiful voice 🎶
This gal gots a great middle name ... I love how the kids pick up their dads' bad habits :-) What a blessing -- to their dads and all the rest of us.
Beautiful voice.
Très belle interprétation d’une très belle chanson nostalgique.
The way you sing it, it sound so beautiful
She's definitely a Guthrie! Her granddaddy Woodie would be proud, and she does a wonderful job with her dad Arlo's tune.
Steve Goodman wrote the song though.
@@jaysarajevo poor Steve left us much too soon
Sarah enjoys her music beatiful i love it from South Africa 🤩🤩🤩

Lovely voice
Wow, what a voice... Thanks for uploading this video...
Thank you, Goodman...your masterpiece continues to be enjoyed by many!! Rest well, kind soul
Guthries are Guthrie’s. Steve Goodman wrote the song. It does not deserve mediocre performance.
Beautiful performance.......
Super Bravo!! Perfect! What a delight this pretty lady is! Thank you.
That's a very pleasant, lovely and sensitive cover ! What a feeling !
It really is more than a cover when the child of a star performs their parents music., ...but OK still a cover ?
Goodness, she looks just like Arlo!
I always do city of New Orleans at Karaoke and I love doing it and so does everyone else especially Roxie and Steve Bailey
Great and unique version!
Love this.
I love this tune well done for honouring your father he would be so proud of you .x
Rosemarie Donaghey, Isn’t Arlo still alive?
@@robertewalt7789 yes he is. Maybe Rosemary is thinking Sara Lee is Steve Goodman’s daughter?
Magnifique ! Merci...
Que mujer tan bonita es Sara Lee !!!
Wonderful! Thank you for this performance. Arlo‘s song accompanied me during most times of my life! ❤️
Steve Goodman wrote this tune.
Amazing ever adore thank you
I always loved this song. The line, "Good mornin' America, how are ya?", seems to come to mind at the strangest times. I was not aware of this duo of Arlo's daughter/Woodie's grandaughter and a guitarist who can call John Steinbeck a relative, until about 20 minutes ago. I'd like to offer my personal thank you to Al Gore.
Can't stop this train!
Fabulous.
Nicely done.
En fantaisk sang godt fremført
I hear ya, DAD🙋
Love it! I think Sarah looks more like her Dad then her brother, Ben.
Delicious..and fine for my harmonica in G !! THNKS

TU and Awesome! Hope she didn't break any copyright laws ... lol.
😊
miss these songs ;-;
today's songs are messageless and bad!!
not all songs... bud
vous allez de nouveau avoir des trains , vous les américains, à grande vitesse certes, mais des trains quand même, je crois que les français vont les fabriquer!
I'm French first l have known the song by a a very bad French cover... Other lyric... Only a love story without interest... The original version, it's something else!!
Nice, just wish Steve Goodman would get his due
Stevie G is smiling...
Nice version! Same mistake as Arlo though - passing "towns" that have no names is how Steve sung it. Referred to old stations where the signs had disappeared.
im always dumbfounded by the virgins that sing "Graveyards full of old black men ".How would you know if the dead were black?I guess I meant "versions" not Virgins!
I have not heard a version of this song that I liked better than Arlo's. Even though Arlo sang "trains that have no names" I didn't get this song for YEARS because I grew up in So Cal and passenger trains weren't really on my radar and trains in general were somewhere "over there". If I'd heard "towns that had no name" I'd still have been in the dark. It isn't a mistake to sing a different word - that's called creativity. Listen to Waylon sing Brown Eyed Handsome Man and then listen to Chuck Berry sing it. Chuck wrote it. Waylon made it work for him.
I grew up in one of those towns, and watched the City of New Orleans (and the City of Miami) pass many times.
Un petit quelque chose de Joan Baez dans la voie de Sarah, magnifique
