  • In this episode of To the Garage. John removes the rear brakes from his Jaguar XK8 and replaces the disc's pads and Flexi hoses with upgraded parts from EBC. He also shows how to adjust the handbrake or E brake shoes shoes

    John you really should always start the brake pipe thread by hand. I have seen many of these nuts cross threaded caused by starting them with a spanner. Then either a new pipe or a repair section has to be fitted making the repair more difficult. 👍 keep the videos coming .

    I felt your pain with those rear brakelines, dreadful access, I should've just waited until I lowered the rear beam in hindsight. Great insight John, thank you. Any time the workshop manuals run a little short or for any tips or tricks, your videos have proved invaluable. Thank you!

    Hi, John -excellent video. My "02 XKR has the same 'banjo' bolt set up as yours - so not just an early model sizing. and likewise my S/S braided line 'banjo' bolt has the finer threads. My car also had little caps in the handbrake adjustment hole in the brake hub. Keep up the good work!

    Another great video John, congratulations. I've just bought a convertible XK8 1999 and shortly after getting it home the 'restrictive performance ' light came on . I've put your recommended OBD2 on it and have got P0355, P0357 error messages - engine misfire on coil E primary and G primary. Have you made a video of changing spark plugs and coils please, I've searched but can't find it. Many thanks and what lovely cars these xk8 s are, well worth the hassles!!

      Not yet Phillip. Its not too difficult though. Well done on your purchase and at least the OBDII has let you know that it is nothing serious.

    I had to do this job on our X300 & found the brake retaining bolts needed a 7mm allen key. Found the shoes did not have any linings at all. Hopefully the hand brake might be more effective when I fit the new shoes. Once the X300 is done it will be time to do the XKR.

    Regarding the handbrake - first of all, very informative videos, very much appreciate all the job you've put into making these for us :) With that out of the way - you mention that the hand brake is rarely used since you have an automatic which has a parking mode and the hand brake really doesn't matter. Well, I'd highly recommend that you, and owners of cars with automatic gearboxes in general, always use the hand brake. The parts in the gearbox that locks the transmission are not designed for extended use without also applying the hand brake. The parts will wear and if you're unlucky they will break. Which will be an expensive repair in most cases. Better to use the system as it was intended, first apply the hand brake and then put the gear selector in Parking mode. Your gearbox will be a much happier unit for a longer time :) (there's a rather nice article on wikipedia about this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_pawl )

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely agree C64X. I always apply y handbrake. The point was that the sheet will not see any wear at all as the transmission lock won't let the wheels turn more than about 5 degrees. The only way our handbrakes see any wear is if you drive off with the handbrake on or do handbrake turns🤣.
      Excellent intel on the parking Pawl by the way.
      Always amuses me in old American cops and robbers films, They SCREACH TO A HALT ,JUMP OUT OF THE CAR, AND THEN... THE CAR ROCKS FORWARD 6 INCHES TILL THE TRANSMISSION LOCK CATCHES IT

    Looking closely at that original Banjo bolt at 18:13, it has rolled thread (as opposed to cut thread). This is why it has a coarse pitch. I’ve seen this used for lifting tackle because it has superior strength properties - but unsure why it is on a Banjo bolt?! If anything, you would want to design the male thread as sacrificial to save damage to the female thread - but nope, the bolt thread is way stronger....

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 года назад

      Thats some keen observational skills there Paul. I had not noticed the rolled thread until you mentioned it

    Thanks John - very helpful. Just one question. If I just want to check on the condition of the handbrake shoes, can I remove the caliper+holder without having to drain or bleed the brakes? I figure if I clamp the pistons back, to ensure they don't come forward, this might work?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  Год назад

      Hi Ian. Yes👍 just suspend the detached calliper so that it does not strain the flexi hoses. Also adjust the handbrake cable to ensure the hand brake shoes are well clear of the drum before you pull the drum/disc off

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 года назад

      Glad to help. The only complete answer is dust shields but they are ugly as a rule. I will put a link to this type of device below. Otherwise ceramic based pads such as EBC Red STUFF produce far less dust, and that dust is silvery grey rather than black

    John, can you tell me if the plug, in the access port of the rear drum is just a plug, or is it threaded? Thank you

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 года назад +1

      Hi Warren. If you are talking about the hole through which I put the screwdriver to adjust the handbrake.
      a) no its not threaded in the disc or in the hub.
      b) I didn't have any form of plug? Doesn't mean there shouldn't be one🤔
      If we are talking about the same hole then is it possible that the disc/drum has been fitted not aligned with the hole in the hub and you can see through the hole in the disc and are looking at the hub?
      I'm not aware of a hole in the backplate. (Which does not mean there isn't one)
      Does the above make any sense Warren?. I find myself desperately wanting to point🤣👈

    hi john another great video as stated before I uprated my x300 front discs and pads from ebc then ordered a full set braided hoses . it was over a year before my mechanic went to fit them and found they were incorrect as they were straight ended however like your xk8 my x300 has banjo fittings on rear caliper .on speaking to them they were adamant the set they had sent was correct and that my brakes had obviously been changed . not so my jag has all iriginal equipment fitted .because it was over a year I could not return for refund so £ 90 out of pocket ..im not surprised they sent you wrong banjo bolts and a less observant guy may have just forced them in destroying the caliper. im very wary of ebc parts now .
