In high volume manufacturing fractions of a cent per part make a difference when you have multiple parts per unit and you are building 3 million units (number of E9x BMWs sold from 2005 to 2013). They used tens of millions of those plastic rivets for just the 3 series car. You also need to factor in the reduction in labor for a pop rivet versus a screw. It is damn annoying, but this is what car manufacturing has become.
Awesome video ! Did this on my challenger bought a poly hand riveter set at harbor freight to replace the old ones .. only $17 and comes with 40 assorted rivets
I wish I'd watched this video before I replaced the bumper on my dad's car. I just pryed really hard until the rivet ripped in half, it worked but it was a huge pain.
Awesome video. I'm going to be replacing my lower bumper valence soon. And I had to find the proper rivets and find out how to remove them too. just like your RUclips name. You are Da man.
Very helpful! Wish you could have popped in a new one right then. I have a bunch of new Dorman 963-201D Plastic Blind Rivets and I’m not sure how they’re installed. Pull to expand? Push and they fall thru. More RUclips searching
Thanks, very helpful even though I took my front wheel off, even though it turns unlike your rears 😂. Had to get to the engine mount on an x1. You could’ve scored a perfect video score if you had included the replacement BMW part number. You do win a “like” though.
They are NOT re-usable. Once you use them and they pop, they are too short to re-use. Yes a pop rivet gun will work provided you have the right size to pull the stem. The plastic stems are much larger in diameter than the most popular, standard metal ones. Please subscribe to my channel. Thanks.
Late reply, but check clips and fasteners' website for affordable clip replacement. dealerships charge an absurd price for blind rivets, something like 4-5$ per rivet
The ones I've removed on various places on Toyota are reusable. Tell this guy to turn the steering wheel if you want to drill the pin out. You don't have to take the wheel off.
If you just push the pin in as opposed to drilling it out is there a chance you will hear the pins just rattling about inside the body of the car if you cant access the reverse side to remove them? I know they are plastic but I have about 40 to remove in order to remove side skirt extensions on a BMW G30 so I can replace the skirts with carbon fibre versions. I don't want to end up with 40 plastic pins stuck inside an inaccessible body panel of the car rattling around.
look at video at 1:57. The pin is still captured. Try one and you will see if yours behave the same. Besides, if you drill them out guess what ... you are going to end up with the same result. You've got to be kidding about hearing the pins or you have super human hearing. Don't overthink it. If this help you, be sure to LIKE and subscribe. That will help me. THANKS.
I'd like to buy a Rivet Gun but I'm just not sure if all Rivet guns can be used for my 2012 e70 x5. I saw one from Amazon for $20 it’s metal and looks like a stapler. it comes with 3 other nose attachments for different sizes or rivets. What size or dimension of this plastic rivets should I look for, for the x5 e70 2012?
That gun with rivets sells for $12 at Home Depot. Those rivets will NOT work with the BMW. Those rivets are aluminum and BMW uses plastic. I also pretty confident those rivets are way to small to work properly on the BMW. The stem of the plastic rivets is pretty large and most entry level tools do not have a nose that will not accommodate the large plastic stem diameter.
The pin would not push out on my Jeep GC, I used a nail punch with hammer for the rivets fastened to metal, the rivets attached to plastic I drilled out, did not want to break the plastic.
I think I've seen everyone and their own mothers doing this. But what about the rivet that has a metal center pin, and a plastic housing? You cannot push them out with force. They are pressed into the hard plastic.

Nice try ! One subscriber from Al Khafji Saudi Arabia 👍
Just the plug thing I was looking for, life saver bro, thanks for the tip
You could turn the tires in ward or out to get better clearance on the rivet.
Unfortunately, my rear tires do not turn.

After removing the pop rivet is it still re usable like l want to add mudflaps will that same rivet be reusable?
Thanks for the help dude!
That was great brother
Very useful-thank you so much!
Are these type rivets re-usable, or do you need to buy new ones? If so, do you know if a standard pop rivet tool will replace them?

You never showed us if they can be put back. Are they reusable? (if you recover the pin)
NOT reusable. The pin is too short to reuse.
Thank you so much fantastic video

So, did you manage to get the wheel well liner out without having to remove the tire?
I don't know how to remove the wheel liner without removing the tire!

Did you remove the splash guards? Can't find anything about how to do so. Those tiny little screws in the rear...?
So many stupid people telling you to turn your rear wheels.
Thank you. I thought it was me. yep, so many who watch my videos seem to be experts. If they know it all, why do they watch?

If you don't want to remove the tire, you could just turn it. Get it right out of the way. Or left... Respectively. This works too.

I bet most want to turn the wheels to the right.
I guess you have rear wheels that turn. Nice!
Thanks!
How much you think a body shop would charge just to take out one tires plastic wheel well and then put in a new one that I already have bought
Yes next time just turn the wheel inwards and use a hammer to tap the rivit in.
Fortunately, my rear wheels don't turn. How about yours?

If only there was a way to move that wheel in a few inches.
You don't have to remove the wheel just get inside turn it

Just turn the wheel
